Review: 42641 Surfing Dogs and Scooter Adventure

Posted by ,

When I first saw the first wave of this year's Friends sets, my first reaction was: "Are those corgis that I see?".

The answer was yes, yes, those were indeed corgis in 42641 Surfing Dogs and Scooter Adventure, and not only that, they were surfing corgis. Surfing dogs!

I think this is the set I never knew I needed.

Summary

42641 Surfing Dogs and Scooter Adventure, 113 pieces.
£12.99 / $14.99 / €14.99 | 11.5p/13.3c/13.3c per piece.

The set has surfing dogs. What else do you need to know?

  • Surfing dogs!
  • Fun beach scene
  • Did I mention the surfing dogs?
  • Only one surfboard

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

inside the box there are three unnumbered bags, an instruction book, and a sticker sheet. None of the stickers seem to have anything to do with dogs, sadly enough.

Minidolls and surfing dogs

There are two minidolls in this set, Sage and Paisley. Sage is outfitted with a helmet, indicating she's ready to take on all of the beach activities. Paisley is joining her, but her helmet is provided separately. They're brought their corgis along - Peaches (inexplicably the black and white corgi) and Waffles. I'm guessing the corgi is a new pet for Paisley - after all, I can't see her bunny Melody hopping on a surfboard.

Here's a close-up of the corgis. I love the printing on them, especially the accents over Peaches' eyes.

Corgis are known for their badonks, so I couldn't let the opportunity go by without a picture.

The completed model

Believe it or not, there are things included in this set other than surfing dogs! As the name of the set suggests, there's a scooter included. Sage is driving this one that has a brick built side car that seems custom made for Peaches. Sage has thoughtfully provided a cookie for Peaches to munch on while riding. Peaches' surfboard (because it is Peaches' surfboard, right?) is attached on the side.

There's also a resting place for the corgis (and their Friends companions). This area under a palm tree has everything the corgis and their people would need - comfortable chaise lounges, drinks, sand castle, kibble dish, toys, and a bone.

Part of the adventure is also taking ride on a land yacht! The yacht has a similar logo to the airline in 42656 Heartlake City Airport and Airplane. Paisley is being a little unsafe here going for a ride with Peaches without a helmet.

When Peaches hops off and decides to go surfing, Paisley gets another passenger.

(Note: land-yachting sloth not included in this set.)

Finally, what we came for: surfing dogs! It's a travesty that while there are two corgis, there is only one surfboard included in the set. Fortunately, since I had a copy of 42672 Creative Beach and Travel Suitcase close by, that was easily remedied.

Overall thoughts

My love of surfing dogs aside, I think this is a really fun set for $15. Two minidolls, two corgis, a custom scooter, land yacht, and a beach scene offers a lot of play value.

And it has surfing dogs!

Oh my! I love theses corgis. And the set is actually surprisingly cute too and very good for its price.

Such a neat little set.

It's almost worth the price just for the dogs and the scooter with the sidecar. It's a really nice set and great value.

Super cute but they could have included a second surf board indeed

It looks to me like three polybags combined into one box set. Kind of hard to see a unifying theme here, with one of those ubiquitous Friends scooters on one hand, a land windsurfing board on another, and a landscape tile that's two chairs with some random stuff arranged around it to fill a single 8x6 half round plate. So yeah, "corgi battle pack" is probably the kindest way to look at this.

The unifying theme is "a fun day at the beach". It has different activities but the setting is consistent.

This is how every animal focused set should be. 2 recolors and bunch of great accesories and 2 fun builds

Also you missed point of the name. Both dogs surf. One is surfing on water one is windsurfing

You're absolutely right! How did I miss that? Too distracted by the corgis, I suppose.

I had never heard the term "Land-Yacht" before! I've always heard them referred to as "wind-surfers" or "land-sails", but land-yacht sounds more whimsical.
Normally you see US people on here commenting on terms the UK reviewers use, which normally I get, but I guess it goes to show the different terms across the US can be lost on people across the continent!

Anyways, I like the corgis. I still find it weird that spare helmets for Friends sets aren't the one with hair attached. I guess it'd be weird for the helmet to have hair when not in use... but as a kid I'd always found it weird when minifigs would go bald when wearing a hardhat or cap.

I've mostly only ever heard "land yacht" used to refer to oversized luxury sedans (a mix of affectionate, referring to their classiness, and derogatory, referring to their heft and poor handling).

My parents have had a couple of Buick LeSabres (an '84 and a '94) and I was known to say of the latter (I never really drove the former) "You don't park this car, you dock it!"

@MeganL strange that your copy of the set didn’t come with a helmet for paisley, mine did!

The review says "Paisley is joining her, but her helmet is provided separately." I assumed this meant that it was in the box as well as a hairpiece for Paisley, but it isn't shown on her at any point in the review. It even says at one point that "Paisley is being a little unsafe here going for a ride with Peaches without a helmet." So if @MeganL's copy came with one, I don't know why it's never pictured, but if it didn't, I don't know why not.

And these days, an imbecile at the helm, too. I'll leave it to the imagination which of the two countries I mean by that. ;-)
