Random set of the day: Fire Helicopter
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 60010 Fire Helicopter, released during 2013. It's one of 40 City sets produced that year. It contains 232 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$39.99/£29.99.
It's owned by 3,248 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $67.10, or eBay.

It might take a little more than water to put that out.
Also, what's up with the image on the side? It's a dark blue storage container.
HELIKOPTER!! HELIKOPTER!!
I always wanted this set as a kid! I think the working winch sold it for me. I kept begging my parents to get it, but alas, to no avail.
Why in the world is there only one white thing at the end? Plus, that things about to blow, gonna need a tiny bit more water… a lot more…price-per-piece is pretty awful for a 2013 set

Ah, they're loaded with concentrated polycarbonate, not water. Don't worry, PC has a low burn rating. It may not really do much to extinguish the fire, but at least it won't do much to spread it, either.

That's...weird. For sure. Don't think we've ever seen that happen before, have we?
RE: the set -- such a hot fire, even the presumably metal railing has ignited
RE: the image -- the RSS feed (yes, we still exist!) has the blue box image as well, which has source of 60010-2, which is this set number, whereas this helicopter image has source 60010-1

There are dozens of us!

You mean the horizontal stabilizer? Unlike airplanes, helicopters have a very asymmetrical flight system. The main rotor is used both to provide lift and handle pitch and roll, by adjusting the angle of attack on the blades as they pass a certain point in the rotation. The tail rotor and vertical stabilizer are used to control yaw, primarily by preventing the fuselage from counter-rotating against the main rotor. I'm not really sure how the horizontal stabilizer functions on a helicopter (beyond that it must do something, or they wouldn't be common to so many designs), but I'm guessing it might interfere with the function of the tail rotor if they added a second one so close on that side. And, again, the flight system is so asymmetrical that you probably don't need a matched pair anyways.

Must be made of something like magnesium. It's going to take a lot more than that helicopter can dish out to extinguish this fire. Better get a dump truck full of sand.

Looks like the blue box is a piece of human-sized furniture, like maybe a toy chest, which I think would be classified as gear. Brickset doesn't appear to have it listed under 60010, so it's weird that this set would be cataloged as 60010-2 instead of 60010-1.
There are actually two versions of this helicopter-the one shown, distinguished by the white flooring in the helicopter and the side sponsons with the studs on the side. The alternative has a much stronger floor (the original tended to fall out under load) but I far prefer the look of the one shown. I found it nearly impossible to secure a copy, though, since the two are not distinguished here or on Bricklink.
But if you do fire helicopter, helicopter will see you in court for unfair dismissal
Remember seeing this one 'in the wild', and thought it look too square. I mean my all time fave (copter-wise) is 7067: Jet-Copter Encounter, and THAT...thing (yeah going with that) is 'chunky'. But this one is 'blocky', as in really 'flat' at the edges...just me?:)
I became aware of the two different version of this set , here on Brickset and obtained one of each from the same shop, about 6 weeks apart.
The set itself is not too notable outside of being an exclusive to certain stores (at least, I recall that it was). I mean, it's a fire helicopter from City. I guess the terrain was novel at the time...
But the most interesting thing about it is that it's known to have two versions due to an extensive design overhaul. It's actually one of the first I think of when I think of sets designed partway through production. On the set's page it's listed on a bricklist documenting such changes and in there it says where you can find instructions for each version:
"A complete reconstruction of the floor, wheels, wheel wells, internal structure, and engine assembly, plus the addition of a water cannon to the starboard side. Also, the fence around the oil depot is elevated by one brick height. The early version has 232 pieces and studs on the sides of the wheel wells. The late version has 225 pieces and a red "stripe" on the wheel wells. Both versions of instructions are available at Brickset. [box: main image] (81/173)"
What struck me seeing this set at release was the use of the train cab canopy for the cockpit section.
Does anyone know what type of helicopter this is supposed to represent?
Cause Im sure Ive seen a real life design like this.
I got the 2017? fire helicopter with the olive green container, which is a better helicopter in my opinion.
Something with this set's entry seems rather broken.
-It's 60010-2 despite there being no 60010-1
-Missing inventory/instructions
-Messed up with the blue storage drawer it seems
EDIT:
Yikes. Bricklink seems to know an alternate version of this (with a slightly different build) explaining the -2 suffix.
That seems to break the Lego.com link though, as they have (seemingly) everything listed.
The blue storage cabinet seems to be this:
https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?G=60010&name=Toy%20Chest&category=%5BHuman%20Furniture%5DT=S&O={%22iconly%22:0}
Also number 60010 and seemingly missing on Brickset. Did the entries got merged by accident?

79104 (same year) was so extensively redesigned that Bricklink lists the second version as a completely different set. 10213 (2010) got a patch kit before a third build was released as 10231. And 21303 (2015) was subject to a recall, as well as a patch kit, before a revised version was produced.
Easily overlooked in a crowded helicopter year, as as the coastguard helicopter 60013 was more interesting with the 6 blades and windsurfer, or the police helicopter 60009 came with either a hideout, or a whole museum 60008.

Sikorsky SH-3 / S-61 Sea King?
looks like this one to me, S-61R: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-61R/media/File:HH-3F_Pelican_from_Coast_Guard_Air_Station_San_Francisco_(cropped).jpg

Those were some of the others that also spring to my mind, yes

Shellraiser is always the first in my mind because I was building it in my living room and it exploded. For the other two, I own both copies of the Shuttle, plus the patch kit, and two copies of the original Wall-E, plus two patch kits.

Same here. It bought two, built the first one without the patch kit, then rebuilt it with the patch kit, and kept the second one sealed, including the patch kit. Should probably sell it though, seeing what they go for these days.

It was used in many other vehicles like 7046 or 7944
Oh great, now I'm wondering which version I have, though it's probably the redesigned one.
I like how Sikorsky this helicopter looks, and the 7738 Coast Guard chopper is also rather Sikorsky.
Looks like mine is the newer version as the image from the box looks different than this.
