Random set of the day: Target Practice
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 70101 Target Practice, released during 2013. It's one of 58 Legends of Chima sets produced that year. It contains 101 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$14.99/£9.99.
It's owned by 2,223 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $9.20, or eBay.

Bird on Bird crime. Like literal drive-by shootings all because of drugs. Chima is messed up.
Those missiles have always been one of my favourite Lego play features.
The Eagles are easily my favorite Chima tribe. They might have one of the best LEGO color palettes in existence.

I'm a bit confused about how they're intended to be used here. It looks like you're supposed to shoot the target with the missile, but are you supposed to ram the Speedor into the trigger to make it fire?

Those missiles were one of the (many, many) reasons that I love 70816. It doesn't just have those, it has flick-fires and the spring-loaded shooters. It's one well-armed spaceship, spaceship, SPACESHIP! Wait, weren't we talking about a Chima set? Oh, well, I don't care SPACESHIP!
I just realized, all of the Chima sets are now eligible for RSotD, because the line ended in 2015. Chima ended 10 years ago.... Nexo Knights is next.... All that still feels like it was just a couple years ago to me. Guess 2020-2022 got mashed into one long year, and 2023-2024 just imploded. Somehow we're halfway through 2025 already, and yet another day is about to tick over.
...Guess this is what happens when you work in retail. Every day is more of the same, and your time not at work is spent in a half-asleep stupor, so it all just blends together....
Ahem, what were we talking about? Oh, right. Chima. Never cared much for Speedorz, and as far as they go, this is... one of them.

Same here, they're definitely my favorite of the many types of LEGO projectile shooters. Lots of power, interesting appearance, distinct trigger mechanism. And the missile isn't easily lost because of its size. That said, I think I only have 1 in my entire collection, from 7476, and I lost the original missile long ago....
Those bird decoys freak me out.
12 years later and the new price in bricklink is still less than MSRP...
I don't hate Chima. They have had some nice figs and sets but that price says volumes about it's popularity.

I guess it depends on your perspective. It’s been a long 5.5 years for me. I’ve lost a newly-retired coworker, a friend from college, one co-founder of my LUG, another charter member of my LUG, the original manager of our local LEGO Store, another coworker, an uncle (the oldest on this list at 69), a former coworker, and just on the heels of losing a third member of our LUG since 2020 started, I found out one of my friends from Brickworld Chicago also passed away. I don’t think I’ve lost that many people under the age of 70 in my entire life up to that point.

I remember Lego really went all-out in terms of these Speedorz sets. They seemed to bet the farm on them, that they'd be riotously popular, and it just didn't seem to take off at all.
I remember a few local department stores clearancing them out cheaply eventually, which was a great way to pick up the figures (which were the only interesting parts of the sets for me).
Shooting at what appears to be actual birds like that seems unnecessarily cruel; are we sure Eagle Tribe aren’t actually the bad guys?
Appropriate Random Set of the Day considering today’s events. Are those ravens named Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan?

Here, most of them were clearanced at £1. They were fun sets for kids to play if you have the right flooring. Just not popular at the time, and little reason to buy now for collectors.

Oh, you have no idea. I placed a string of LEGO.com orders within a short span of time, only to find that every single order had a copy of 70113 slipped in. I think I ended up with between 5-7 copies of that set, even though I never actually bought one. I put the Chi crystals from a few copies to use, and stripped them of all the sword-leaves, but that's largely all I ever did with them.
Then at Brickworld Chicago, I think they had three _pallets_ of that same set on site. If you tried out the Speedorz function, you got a free copy. They still had over one full pallet left when everyone was packing up, and you could just walk up and take as many as you wanted.
I have to give this set credit for trying something else with the speeder here. Either that, or it's actually a different play feature and the speedor was just tacked on because they ran out of ideas for it?

*Are* they real birds, though? I'm pretty sure that the Raven Tribe were the bad guys, so maybe those are just like the dummies used in real-life training for cops and the military and such.

I seem to have missed some news somewhere, and those names aren't helping. What events are you talking about?
Weird. On the one hand, it's weird that those wings are just 1x6 plates - but on the other hand, those crow-things look pretty great.
Why are we talking about hands, though? They're wings.

Copy and paste those names into Google and you'll know. Also: not really appropriate at all.

Yeah, I probably should have done that first, and I'd been seeing it spelled "Fordo," not :Fordow." And yeah. not in the best taste.

Jesus Breakdancing Christ, dude. Keep it light.
So, the speedorz game is like a sort of glorified "war" card game, where the winner of the speeder challenge declares which attribute of the cards will be used. I have repeatedly tried to design a more nuanced game based off of this, but it's never worked out.

So Lego literally couldn't even give them away?
Ouch.

I agree, I played with those things for hours…
Cheap way to get a rubber missile launcher!

Well, I mean, they definitely did through online orders (there was no obvious way to opt out, but I suppose you could have called an order in and pointedly requested they not include one), but I don’t know if they had leftovers that they had to ship back after Brickworld (I packed up and got the heck out of the showroom).
