Random set of the day: Bi-Wing
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 3502 Bi-Wing, released during 1998. It's one of 12 Znap sets produced that year. It contains 25 pieces.
It's owned by 236 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $16.00, or eBay.

Lego's knock-off B-wing
Oh ZNAP!
Also, such a weird time in Lego history…

The real joke was what Lego was doing back in the late-90s.
I’m happy that the wing has come out! All the best to this wing!
Stair Wars has really fallen on hard times.
That doesn't look like the Rebels' B-wing. More like the Ewok Glider.
That's a Fighter Jet, and a regular Airplane, and a very funky Dragon. Bi-Wings are more typically known as Biplanes, and have two sets of wings, so I don't know why this set is called this. It matches the naming scheme of other sets from Znap, but perhaps this should be called Aero-Thing, Wing-Thing, Super-Wings, maybe even Some-Thing.

You might even say it fell down the stairs. (I don't usually poke fun at typos, but I couldn't resist.)

The very first word, you’ve added an extra I.
Have they put the tail of that main build on a hinge piece? I remember they didn’t exactly have the best strength, that thing is going to be flopping around all over the piece

That doesn’t mean it’s a typo.
Nobody still mentioning that this yellow hinge piece is barely able to hold the weight of the tail part. Also these get loose after a while.

There's exercises for that.
The Bi-Wing? Happy pride month! :D

It really is amazing what the Rebellion was able to accomplish with such equipment.
Viva Luthen!
I always wondered what age group this was for, the small number of large pieces and simple models suggests toddlers, but you would need some dexterity to slot the pieces together and imagination suggests older kids, but they would have already moved onto more interesting toys?
I guess Lego was threatened enough by K'NEX in the 90s that they felt like they had to compete with them and make their own version. I had a few K'NEX sets, and they were neat, but there was no comparison to the fun of a standard Lego set.
This is also LEGO. We love it as much as other family members.
I remember seeing those Znap sets in toy stores, marked down to clearance, then discounted again… and again. At some point, I swear they were practically paying you to take them. Still, nobody wanted them!

Never skip tail day.
While this is clearly an attempt to compete with K'NEX, I'd like to know how well those beams integrate with Technic, whether these pieces influenced the development of Technic parts, which nowadays seem to be a lot of similar bent I-bems with periodically spaced axle holes.

You're not wrong, but it's not exactly a secret that this is a K'Nockoff - although you might also be right in that these beams influenced the ones that came after it.
They're compatible with Technic (and some System) through use of the Technic pins and pin-holes, and as such, the wheels can also still be used with contemporary sets. The actual Znap-connections are not compatible with anything worth mentioning.
I saw an exhibition where they had built bridges for trains etc. using ZNAP, but guessing it would be difficult to accumulate enough useful parts now compared to just using widely available Technic beams.

Surely you can't...

It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether.
And that, as much as the fact that I actually left my tea in the kitchen, lead to my drinking problem.
Happy Pride Month from ZNAP!
If you don't like Znap, we have a word for that - Bi-wing-phobia.
1998 was the year for Bi-Wings. Not only this, but the 5928 Bi-Wing Baron and the 6905 Bi-Wing Blaster.

I miss Construx. They were a lot of fun back in the day. A very different type of building compared to both Lego and K'Nex.

[simultaneously] It's an entirely different kind of flying.

Funnily the K'Nex inventors wanted Lego to make their toys, but they refused to. Makes the whole Znap story even more ridiculous.

Or, the latter explains the sudden lack of the former.
@Atuin:
They what? So, they showed up, said, “We know your brand is built on everything being compatible with everything else, but we’d like to hire you to make this entirely incompatible system we came up with,” and they expected TLG to jump at the opportunity? I guess that does actually explain why ZNAP is not in a compatible scale with K’Nex.
