Random set of the day: Hoth Wampa Cave
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 8089 Hoth Wampa Cave, released during 2010. It's one of 32 Star Wars sets produced that year. It contains 297 pieces and 3 minifigs, and its retail price was US$39.99/£35.99.
It's owned by 15,957 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $137.20, or eBay.

Double Star Wars!
We need a new set with the Wampa. We haven't had one in ages.
wow, they have KFC on hoth!
Double Star Wars! @Huwbot is excited for the 25th anniversary!

Definitely agree. And next time, hopefully it’s not in a $250 UCS set.
I currently have this set in my possession because I keep forgetting to contact my friend and tell him to take his collection back, but I don't even remember how I felt about it before dismantling and bagging it to save space. I want to say that it's good, it's well constructed, but there are reasons why I passed on it back in 2010. The lightsaber feature isn't as good as it could be, the cave is decently detailed on the interior, but the exterior is sparse, and if you have Snowspeeders, you're not really getting anything new there. Best thing about the set is the Wampa, could use a bit more cave. But again, I don't remember exactly, I recorded a review back in 2021, and still haven't gotten around to editing it for a final video. That has nothing to do with the quality of the set, I'm just lazy.

Same. I'd like the cave to be a lot more substantial than preivous iterations though.

Agreed. Don't know if its controversial to say, but I actually hope they just outright reuse this old figure. Both sets to feature the Wampa had identical ones despite being a few years apart, and its a pretty perfect representation as is.
Although if they do update it... leg articulation would be nice. Won't happen if its another Big Fig, but who knows what direction they'll take it.

I’ve been a bit worried about them ditching the Bigfigs, to be honest. I think the design is perfectly serviceable for Lego, limited articulation and all. I’m not eager to see them go the way of the Minifigure-esque built figures like Grawp. The super-sized ones are okay, but I’d like to see the player variety ones make a comeback.
Sure hope we get a new ESB Snowspeeder with the orange markings and the new windscreen next year.
Double Star Wars! Excellent.
@PurpleDave :
Regarding yesterday:
Oops, seems I messed a bit up, since I recalled that from memory. There was the interview with Jens Nygaard Knudsen (which was done by Mark Stafford), where he gave this list:
White/Red: Explorers
Yellow: Scientists
Blue: Technicians/Mechanics
Black: Warriors
It seems I messed up that list with the roles assigned in the Jim Spaceborn comic, though those don't line up either with other lists :S
He also said "we considered the red ones to be the ‘bad’ guys, and that they were two competing factions."
EDIT:
Seems this is from Brickjournal I guess...

I believe originally the red spacemen were supposed to be Soviet cosmonauts and the white spacemen were American astronauts.

Orange markings is more iconic, but Luke's has grey markings.
Personally my hope would be they go retro-ish and do a light grey and orange snowspeeder again.
Huh, I though this came out the same year as 7749, but I misremembered, it came out a year after. Anyway, I still kick myself for not getting this one. In addition to having the aforementioned 7749, I got all the other snow-themed Star Wars sets from 2010 that cost less than fifty dollars: 8083, 8084, even 8085!
I have such fond memories of this set and how excited I was for it. It was one of those unique moments when a never-before-released Star Wars creature was released in Lego for the first time (as a fully molded figure, no less). Exciting stuff!
Before this set, we had to make due with the yeti from 7412. This was quite the improvement!
Wooow...Dismal REALLY changed Star Wars; because I don't remember E.S.B. playing out like this AT ALL...and YES, I've seen the 'Special Edition'...:D
@SearchlightRG:
Grawp is too big to be represented by a bigfig, and the Wampa is too small to use the brickbuilt megafig design.
@Atuin:
Yeah, that still conflicts with both of the lists that Mark Stafford posted. At this point, I don’t think we’ll ever get the 100% accurate story on job assignments, assuming there even is one. It’s also possible that different designers had conflicting job lists back in the day, or that it was just oral tradition that never had any sort of consistency.
@Lewa8439:
Yeah, that was covered in the posts from yesterday’s RSotD. That arrangement couldn’t have lasted long, though, because Yellow followed pretty quickly on their heels.
@The_Chosen_1:
Excluding sentient creatures, I can think of this, the taun-taun, the rancor, and the dewback from the OT. Never got a molded bantha, mynock, dianoga, or sarlaac. Never got any sort of ronto. From the PT, all I can think of are the kaadu and the varactyl.
Super nostalgic. Need to buy a replacement for the Snowspeeder guns though

I would love to get the arena beasts.
If there's one thing I recall about this set was that it was too expensive. I don't remember the price at the time anymore but it's all I could thinknof when I saw it in catalogs.
I guess I never really looked at it as its own set. The Snowspeeder is nothing too out of the ordinary, although at that point it had been a while and I believe that this version would be the template for them going forward for a while. Zev Senesca is a nice new figure (although he appeared in a battlepack that year too) and the wampa is probably the reason for the higher price in hindsight.
The wampa is a good design, but rotating wrists would elevate it a lot.
Finally the cave. It looks surprisingly substantial. This is 2010 so the build is straightforward, but the inclusion of a carcass and of course a place to hang Luke are appreciated. The lightsaber feature is simple and not much else.

We're soooo overdue on those. Make it happen lego!
I'm not really into SW, but I sure would like to have one of these Wampas. It's a big Yeti, that's all the motivation I need.
It's funny how despite being a bigfig the wampa isn't listed in the minifigure database, but the LOTR cave troll is.
I almost bought this several times back in the day, such a nice set. I’m guessing a new version would retail for £150?
A Wampa mech would be cool.
@Pekingduckman said:

That's because it is catalogued as an animal, like the Rancor or Smaug, whereas the cave troll isn't an animal.
@PurpleDave: also regarding yesterday.
My childhood story definitely has some Narnia vibes, but the funny thing is, I had never seen or even heard of the Narnia story back then. And even though I bought the DVD of the first movie years ago I have yet to watch it.
Omg! The sticker is peeling off!
This set was included within 75098 : Assault on Hoth, which needs another remake as well as the return of the Wampa. Unable to afford this for the kids, but the triple pack 66366 was a pretty good ultimate battle pack with 12 minifigs (even if twin Zevs).

You want a remake of one of the most maligned "sets" in Lego's long and storied history?
Some people just want to see an ice-planet burn, I guess.

Given that the Luke mech they did was modelled after a X-Wing part of me hopes they do a “Hoth Luke” mech where it’s styled after a Wampa. Even though, if the subject is “things Luke goes inside on Hoth”, a Tauntaun might be the better choice

I really liked this set as well. sure, the 'cave' and lightsaber feature weren't great and the $40 was high at the time, but a Wompa (with ability to remove and arm and then take him to a space gas station), 2 nice figs and a good snowspeeder! great set.

It feels like only yesterday since I last linked to 71002-8 (because it was).
The wampa has always been an interesting issue to me. As a kid, I found the original portrayal to be significantly frightening, moreso for what it implied that what was depicted.
When I viewed the original deleted scenes of the wampa Echo Base invasion, I thought they were hilarious and plausibly spooky.
The Lucas renovation replaced the implied gore with new footage of blood, bones, saliva and a swole wampa. I like roid-wampa. He's better than the dude in a suit.
However, two things have always puzzled me about the remake. One, why do they still use so much of the old, brief cutaways of Wegovy wampa? Especially jarring is the ol' jazz-hands charge right before Luke chops him. Second, why did they leave the signs on the door which proclim "Danger! Don't Open! Wampas on the Other Side!"?
Ah yes, that scene where Luke bribed Mr. Wampa not to eat him for a turkey leg. Classic!

Dawn Treader is the best of the books, followed by Wardrobe. But Prince Caspian was a tale about exploring the ruins of a thing, rather than the thing itself. We excavate ruins with the intention of gaining greater insight into the way things were before they fell apart, not to see how things ended up as a result. Dawn Treader explored new realms, the likes of which are not found in the other six books combined.
@TheOtherMike:
I still wish they'd managed to adapt the entire seven book series, and they didn't even make it halfway.

Yeah, I mean, you have a high enough opinion of the sequel trilogy to base your username on a character from it. I enjoyed the first one (although I have been known to call it The Force Remakens), but didn't much care for the next two, and I know that there's absolutely no love lost between The Purple One and the ST. But like you said, to each their own.

Yeah, I didn't really like the Prince Caspian or Dawn Treader books; I thought the changes they made to the films were good."
Woof! While I like the movie on its own, VotDT is probably my favorite of the books. Reepicheep might also be the best character in the whole series!"
Voyage of the Dawn Treader has my absolute favorite opening line in all of English-language fiction. "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." And I still wish they'd adapted The Horse and His Boy."

While the wardrobe is my favorite, I loved Prince Caspian! The Dawn Treader I really did not like at the first, but after I went into it again, I came to really appreciate it, although it is still toward the bottom in my opinion. @PurpleDave While the Dawn Treader had many clearer explored realms, I think the Last Battle overall had more. If we’re going combined, no way. It really does seem like that, but if you go deeper, it’s just not true. There’s so much more than you first see, it’s really incredible, something that Lewis excelled at.
@ForestMenOfEndor You’re definitely right! (Sort of, haha.)
@TheOtherMike Just the name Eustace Clarence is great, but add Scrubb, and it’s an all time classic!
@BabuBrick, I’ll respectfully disagree. The Magician’s Nephew would’ve been it, but I read it recently, and it’s really, really grown on me.

Same, but I think it really helps to read it last, after all the others. There are subtle details, and overall it’s a really great book, and a great prequel! I recently reread most of them, and I loved it thoroughly!
@TheOtherMike:
There’s no love to be lost. The OT was a love letter to the kinds of movies George grew up with. The PT may have gotten lost in his fascination with the technology, but the heart was still there. The ST was about nostalgia-baiting and ROI. They may have paid off their purchase with those three movies, but they burned any goodwill they once had with the moviegoing public, to the point that the best Disney Wars film performed the worst, after people swore off ever going to another one in droves.
Was not expecting to see a Narnia discussion on a Star Wars set...
I like all three Narnia movies, but the first is easily the best. Caspian being my second favorite and Treader my least. That being said, I love Caspian and thoroughly enjoy Treader. Although Treader gets mostly carried by Reepicheep and Eustace, I do still enjoy Edmond's continued arc. It's been years since I have read the books, but my favorite was easily The Horse and His Boy. I would love to see it adapted, but I doubt it will happen. The Silver Chair was a shame to not adapt since they found the perfect Eustace.

Interesting… I didn’t like the Force Awakens, but I loved the Last Jedi, but I know a lot of people really don’t. The Rise of Skywalker… nothing more needs to be said… or a rant will ensue. But, @BabuBrick, it’s good some people liked it, and that some liked the Force Awakens. Yes sir, to each their own.

I’ve done both multiple times. The first time I read them, I did release order. Then when I read them for the second time, I did chronological order. Ever since then, I’ve alternated between the two.
This discussion’s been fun! I usually don’t get to talk to people about Narnia, and it’s kinda nice to hear other people’s opinions about the books and the movies :)
