It doesn't take much willpower to forget these superhero ultrabuilds existed.

Those DC and Marvel buildable figures from that time period were horrifying.

Nah, the later Star Wars CCBS was actually really good, at least for the characters with helmets and armor. I still regret not buying them at the time. This guy? Nah. I was in my Dark Ages at the time and not following Lego news, and when I saw this guy and the other Super Heroes CCBS figures in a little corner store while on a study abroad in Latin America I thought they were the worst knockoffs I'd ever seen and couldn't possibly be actual Lego sets.

Coincidentally I just ordered some of the green ccbs shells from this set! The color was exclusive at the time. I'm not sure if we ever got any more as I didn't collect any Bionicle gen 2.

This set looks to me like one of the better ones from this style. Maybe it's because it fits with the CGI of the green lantern animated series? I don't think it's that bad!

I actually bought several of these (at clearance prices) from TRUs all over the local area, and bought so many of the power blast that I caused the BL price on the half-starburst to spike. But I did so by buying a huge lot of them, and I guess the next person to list them thought there was still a large demand for them, while I had already walked away sated. See, I figured out how to connect the ray portion to a minifig's hand, so I could have the minifig GLs shooting that massive thing from their "ring". And I bought parts for 60 GL minifigs on OPAB, so...

I'm a huge Green Lantern fan, so this one stuck in my memory, partially because it's the only CCBS superhero I got. As for the others, I remembered 4527 (because it was RSotD a while back) inferred the existence of 4526 (because why would they do the Joker without doing Batman) vaguely remembered 4529, had completely forgotten 4597 until seeing it mentioned in this comment thread, and also had no memory of 4530.

Irony, they (TLG) went with Batman and this guy at DC Lego's launch...I mean; I 'get it', the afore movie was coming out (funny side story: saw it THREE TIME in theatres that year...no, nobody had a gun to my head...). I mean TLG SHOULD have made Supes as well, as; well...Morbid had three, soooo...even 'back then' (and before the 'Amalgamation' ), TLG DID NOT want DC...:|

I think definitely in part because being based on comics means these guys can have a more cartoony style, while the Star Wars ones’ attempts at real people plunged right into the uncanny valley

Looking at the inventory, apparently the """"ring"""" is called "KNUCKL DUSTER" and is set-exclusive, and his head is flesh colored without the painted on parts displayed.

Completely agree--75112 adorns our mantle to this day. My daughter even made a cape for him, he looks fantastic.

By in Germany,

That's some strange looking "lantern" that he's holding, if you ask me.
The one Sheldon had on TBBT looked quite different.

By in Netherlands,

These were launched right at the start of the CCBS system, and you can tell they are very experimental. I believe they're supposed to be wearing power armor of some kind. I actually think this is one of the better ones, but The Joker and Batman are rough. Still, they were way ahead of Hero Factory at the time. And they had combination builds!

Still, if you compare them to Hero Factory from 2012 onward, to G2 Bionicle and to Star Wars CCBS these won't hold a candle. I guess that it makes sense they didn't release in my country, as at the time superhero comic books were a lot more niche.

Btw, that spiked end of the projection led a long and prosperous life after this set. It even appeared in at least one system set, the 70223 Icebite's Claw Driller mech from Chima. Probably more. Between that, the chest add-on piece, and 4530 The Hulk's torso cgest piece this line gave some lasting parts (until CCBS was killed off of course)

Up to several. It saw some use as a trap-mechanic in one of the Scooby Doo sets, that being the pretty decent (but prohibitively expensive) 75904. It even popped up in a Mindstorms-set, 45560. It mostly featured in Constraction-sets, but eventually it, like Trans Neon Orange, went to over to die in Nexo Knights.

The last set I can find actually _has_ it in TNO, 70363. A fitting farewell, I guess.

That's actually part of the reason I want to see that movie. I found out from the New York Times review that Nathan Fillion is playing Guy Gardner in it. And when checking IMDB just now to verify that he's not the only Firefly cast member in it, Alan Tudyk is in the cast, too. I love those two. Since I can't get out and about like I was able to do before my stroke, I am so buying a copy of this movie when it comes out on Blu-Ray.

By in United States,

I have thought about getting this and replacing the head to make a giant alien Green Lantern to go with my mini figure GLs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh my gosh I adored this. It is still proudly displayed. Of course gl is my fav superhero though.

@TheOtherMike:
If Immortan Joe reviewed the new Superman movie, it would be one word long. As much as I don’t care for Gardner, Fillion’s performance was probably the highlight of the film. Tudyk only has a voice role, and most of the film was over before I realized it was actually him.

@kdu2814:
I randomly ended up with the CCBS Hulk head, so I already did that. It looks pretty rough, given how clumsy the CCBS designs were at that time (wire frame “skeleton” that couldn’t accept both front and back shells on the torso).

DC had three as well, GL, Batman, and the Joker.

By in Canada,

@RogueWhistler: You are right of course, I should clarified "3 Super HEROES"...but then again, would we have had that Joker 'Mech' in the "Lego Batman 2" video-game...

It should also be of note: Hal is my 'go to' GL; as, he got me interested in comic (Barry Allen/The Flash kept me interested in comics). And the in fact, I don't hate any of the GL characters: John, Guy (who we still need a minifig), Kyle (see Guy), Kilowog,...Alan's become a 'special case', as: I don't 'the character', I HATE what they've (Dc Comics and the writer they hired) done to him ...Basically, they disregarded dozen of years of history, to turn him into something/someone he's not...and they keep saying they won't reverse it...:|

@brick_r:
If you’re referring to what I think you’re referring to, I have no idea what the history of the character was (whether it’s truly incompatible, merely unsupported, or if there had been any secret coding all along), but you know there’s no way they can walk that back now. Look at the backlash they got for putting Barbara back in the Batgirl costume after they rebooted the entire continuity for New 52. People were fine with them walking back through Grayson, Todd, and Drake to get to Damian as Robin again, but the only other comic book character I can think of who comes close to Babs being in a wheelchair is Freddie Freeman walking with braces, and even then he’s fully healed anytime he turns into Captain Marvel Jr.

By in Canada,

@PurpleDave: I see your points about Batgirl (which funny enough; I was fine with, even to the point of collecting her last series); but no this wasn't changing something 'physical' about the character...before new 52, Alan Scott: had been married (to the original Harlequin I might add, who was his secretary at his radio station), had kids (Jade and Obsidian, and not with the afore mentioned wife).
After new 52, that ALL 'went away'...they "Bobby Drake"d him (hmm...come to think of it; DC did the same to Tim Drake, ironically). And DC has basically stated he won't be reverted 'back' to a married man with a wife who happens to a woman. And this is in spite of the amount of fans wanting the reversal, and that completely sucks...:|

@PurpleDave: Between Rogue One and a few animated movies, I'm used to not seeing Tudyk's face in his movies.
