Double Pirates! Kind of.

Look at all that gold. Pieces molded in Warm Gold, drum lacquered in Metallic Gold, and even plated with Chrome Gold all in one set.

By in New Zealand,

I always wanted this set, but never got it! I've been trying to find one at a justafiable price, but I haven't yet.

It will be a nice pairing with the new Black Pearl set.

CHROME GOLD

I always remember this set. Looking at it (amongst the other sets) in the Lego catalogues from days of old

By in Canada,

This set is particularly memorable to me, I bought it on vacation in Quebec City from a store called Benjo with thirty dollars I found lying in the street.

Sad that we’ll never get a $20 PoTC set ever again.

And Barbossa is prepared to wang you upside the head with an apple if you try to take any of that gold.

All for $19.99. Good times. Plus, you get FOUR Minifigures, and a great blue plume. Best battle pack ever…plus a scabbard…

I bought two of these back in the day. No regrets.

Oh, hey, look at the time!

Damn. You're still here? Fine. First one was fantastic because they just made it a love letter to all the stuff you (used to) see in the most popular ride at Disneyland. Second and third were really weird, but still good. Fourth was a non-PotC story (literally) that had PotC content shoehorned into it (badly). And the fifth one has some story problems, and does something that I'm pretty sure would have damaged any attempt to make PotC6. I didn't want to fastball my drink at the screen like I did when Darth Tantrum moped down the shuttle ramp at the start of The Forced Remake, but don't go into 5 with high expectations.

I remember this set! I wanted to get a couple because of the nostalgia for the gold pieces, but I could never find one in a store. So I just ended up bricklinking some gold pieces with orders as I went.

Of course what I couldn’t predict is that my tiny daughter would grow up to be this huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan. Now I wish I’d picked up more sets.

By in Poland,

I had no idea there were still chrome parts in 2011. I thought they were 90s - early 00s things.

"Ah, Hector, it's been too long! Hasn't it?"

"Aye! Isla De Muerta, remember? Ya shot me."

"...No I didn't."

Not the right scene, but relevant nonetheless. Anyways, good set. Unfortunately all the PotC sets came out a year before I figured out how LEGO releases worked... and so they all retired before I could get any. Not that I was a big fan of the movies back then.

It's wild that this is the only set based on the first movie

By in Germany,

Really liked that repurposing of the Ninjago skulkin legs for Barbossa. Sad this doesn't happen more often.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Whoever designed this set and made sure to give Barbossa an apple really understood the assignment

I'm sorry but you're in for a disappointment: all the coins and the gold bar were actually just the dull pearl gold. This set was kind of notorius because they completely fooled us with that shiny-looking gold. Suffice to say, that would've made it heaps better.
Truth to be told, there was a small chance that you'd have received the chrome gold variants of those pieces (because, apparently, they swapped them mid-production), but most people got the pearl ones.

I got this set early in 2011, before it officially released. I really liked the movie, and someone was selling a copy for just above retail, so I decided to go for it. A really nice set with 4 exclusive figures and a pretty nice build, all things considered. And yes, I'm pretty sure the bars and coins I got were pearl gold, not chrome, so not sure how that works with the whole story there.

This must be one of only a few sets which include multiple minifigures of the same character? At least it was in 2011. I know that obviously the transformation feature has happened a few times with Batman and Daeth Vader, but it would be interesting to see the list of sets with two figures of the same character.

These POTC sets still sometimes included chrome gold coins, my copies of Whitecap Bay and London Escape have them. If one received pearl gold elements, they could ask for a replacement of chrome gold ones. Ah, the good old times. Something makes me think nowadays it be not possible. Arrr :(

By in Netherlands,

I have this one. Bought it together with 7187 Escape From Dragon's Prison. Little did I know both would hugely inflate in value later. I was fortunate enough to keep this one. The prison... I eventually got again. Just a lesser quality copy than my original unfortunately.

It's a good set, but it felt a bit like it was kept to a tight budget. What you do get however is a neat diorama with a couple of good functions (remember when sets had action features all the time?); the colapsing mast and the rotating platform to change Barbossa into his skeleton form. 1382 Scary Laboratory did it leagues better because that one was enclosed, but considering the setting this one is fine too. Getting both versions of Barbossa and a Jack with skeleton alternate face was neat, as was Swann. The chest of cursed treasure is great to get too. I had the chrome gold variant, so combined with the poster it came with it did feel quite deluxe. The box was even quite glossy!

Now if only it came with Will Turner to allow you to complete the scene...

I didn't know it was pearl gold for the majority. It just thought it was random. I guess I'm extremely lucky with the one I got :D

"But they were all of them deceived, for another color variant was made."

It's weird how barbossa gets a whole minifigure for his skeleton form but jack sparrow only gets an alternate face.

I can think of one other set that existed at the time that not only had two versions of the same character (twice over, in fact), but had a function to "transform" them: 4756.

Way back in 2003, 4851 had a feature to transform Norman Osborn into the Green Goblin (as well as having Peter Parker and Spider-Man figures in the same set). It appears the new Oscorp building 76324 has a similar feature.

By in United Kingdom,

I find it really weird - especially after having watched PotC 2 & 3 for the first time only a couple of months ago - that this set is the only one to include a minifigure of Elizabeth Swann. She's only, like, one of the three central protagonists of the franchise... and yet she never even got any representation of her more 'piratey' outfits, just this one dress from the first film?

Will only got one minifigure too but his at least made it into three sets. Jack - naturally - was in something like fourteen sets across all the different versions of him. So it's odd to me that Miss Swann didn't get at least a couple more appearances in sets, to bring her total to equal with Will's.

"La Isla de Muerte" (Island of Death) or "La Isla de la Muerta" (Island of the dead woman). Come on, Spanish is not that complicated.

The theme was created for PotC4, and “revived” for PotC5, so it got short shrift the same way key LotR scenes did when that theme was launched to go with the Hobbit films, or Toy Story 1 & 2 did when that theme was launched and revived for TS3 and TS4.

Oh yeah, I'd completely forgotten about 4851. And I have it! Granted, it's been years since all of its pieces were together in one box, as they were separated into organizers years ago.
