Random set of the day: Grand Prix Racer
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 42000 Grand Prix Racer, released during 2013. It's one of 12 Technic sets produced that year. It contains 1141 pieces, and its retail price was US$129.99/£79.99.
It's owned by 6,168 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $252.50, or eBay.

Lego: "This is NOT a Formula One car people, it's a grand prix racer. There's a difference"
Stickers inside wheel hubs is a new one for me. They're probably easier to apply than on the inside of those 1x4x3 panels or the larger 4x4x6 quarter cylinders, but still, are they really that important?
I own this one! The number of functions they packed into it was great. It's the reason why none of the current F1 technic cars interest me, they just don't come close to the functionality of this set.
I’ve somehow never seen this set… weird.
@MCLegoboy
It’s a new one for me as well. Doesn’t seem that terrible to apply, but definitely not the best.

Have you seen how much AFOLs nitpick over details? We got a whole article about pauldrons on Clone Troopers! They hadn’t included those stickers who knows how much uproar there would have been from a very specific subset of fans!
Nice set, with nice ve functions. It even has a B model.
It look much better to me when fitted with the 'F1 tyres': https://brickshelf.com/gallery/rothw/technic/42000/42000_02.png
But then that's the reason why it has been named "Grand Prix Racer"?
From 2013.....F1 stopped using grooved tires in 2009. This clearly isn't an F1 car at all!
But interesting to see properly sized rear tires already were an issue back then)
Other than that, cool set! And dare I say I like the B-model even more?
This is why I like RSotD, I get to discover sets I've never seen or heard about. I'm not into Technic at all, but this looks like a really cool set. Ten year old me would have really liked this and wouldn't care one bit that it isn't F1 or some big brand hypercar.
Great set indeed (and big!). There's a nice C-model on Rebrickable too.

Which used to be standard back when LEGO wasn't cheaping out on almost anything.
I dare say the decade between roughly 2007 and 2017 was peak LEGO and it's been kind of downhill ever since. Look at Technic, look at Star Wars, etc.

I'd say the peak period is wider than that - 2005 to 2019 at least.
Anyway, 2013! The year I got back into Technic. Not because of this set, though - 42004 and 42006 were the draws for me.
Interesting that it has a gearbox for the purpose of adjusting the air foils. Like the philosophy was: This is a Technic set, so it has to have functions. So unlike today's philosophy.
My first reaction was a bit visceral, to be honest. That's what a year of releasing F1 after F1 after F1 following years of releasing car after car after F1 after car does.
That said, it's nice to see a more 'primitive' nonlicensed and function-heavy car like this again. And with 'primitive' I mean that it's not as full of complicated overly specific parts and is not as 'accurate' to one specific car and one specfic manufacturer. Because when that's not the case the 'accuracy' doesn't stand in the way of technic functionality or creative liberties.
... I just woke up, so pardon my old man yelling at clouds moment
Oh, look. An anorexic car.
I actually own this. :)
Think it was my first set after moving to Germany.
Pretty good representation of F1 cars of the time, it even has working DRS... something which today's £200 Red Bull and Ferrari cars do not have.
Mad to think this was only £80.

Talking about not-F1, are we all enjoying the Belgian Grand Prix? ;-)

There's a huge difference between Star Wars fans' level of obsession and everyone else's.

You say that but I’ve seen how they get about trains and boats
If I somehow found myself in possession of this set, I'd use tweezers to put those stickers inside the wheels, even if I also found that I had complete control over my left arm and hand. And as far as I can remember, the only time I've used tweezers for sticker application was the stickers in the wheel wells on 76077.
@Binnekamp: https://brickset.com/parts/6064445/flat-tile-2x2-no-13 (I once specifically hunted that down in the parts database (since CMFs don't list individual part inventories) just so I could use it in cases like this.)
