Random set of the day: General Grievous
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 10186 General Grievous, released during 2008. It's one of 21 Star Wars sets produced that year. It contains 1085 pieces, and its retail price was US$89.99/£63.59.
It's owned by 2,885 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $403.90, or eBay.

OG Star Wars set! Such a cool set for it's time.
I’m surprised they haven’t done a remake of this set’s concept yet, given the prevalence of buildable figures in the theme these days. I think we’ll see one in the next few years, at least.

Yeah, I hope so. This set is good, but it hasn't aged the best.
Oh boy, this set is cool... until he falls over.
So yeah, he's top heavy, and the joints at his hips aren't strong enough to keep him upright unless he is standing straight up. You may be able to go one click forward, but it's a little dodgy depending on how you have the arms positioned. Another click forward and he'll just fold in half and topple over (which is not great because he's always up high since that's where there's room). I was able to use a collection of clear bricks, headlights, and cheese slopes at the hips to allow him to hunch a bit more and lock him in place, and he looks much better. It may be causing a little bit of added stress to the legs, but they're pretty solid and firmly connected into that base.
I do wish the feet could be offset just a bit, and they probably can with enough modding, it would definitely help with stability and the stress, but I prefer to try to keep my display sets as original as can be. And he's so tall, he stands in the back of a handful of other Technic and sculpture builds, so the parallel legs are obscured.
The rest of the set is so cool looking though, it's worth it. I love the lightsabers and how each one is unique, definitely my favorite part, and I've used similar techniques for MOCs in the past.
I bought one of these early on to build, and then ended up buying a second for 75% off retail at a scratch and dent sale during Brickworld Chicago. Second copy has been raided for many parts.

They did make a Constraction figure, but that's as close as they got.

Definitely, but given how spindly Grievous is on all his limbs I'm not sure Lego will be able to manage his appearance with their modern structural durability standards.
General Kenobi, you are a bold one!
Back away. I will deal with this Jedi slime myself.
I thought this was 75112 at first.
This set predicted modern LEGO Star Wars
I’ve always liked the spinning stand to this one. A part of me wishes the buildable characters nowadays had those display sticker plaque. Who knew this would bring way to a whole line. Also, what’s up with the £ pricing?
Looks almost like the OG Grievous from Clone Wars.
Back when he wasn't a coward with a coughing problem.
Always wanted this one, I built a multicolor one years ago. The stand makes this looks so much nicer!
I really wish they would have remade this set for the episode III anniversary this year
“Also aboard the ship is Commander Nefarious, Captain I'm-a-bad-guy, and Admiral Bone-To-Pick.”
I wonder if he ever accidentally sliced any of his arms off as he learnt to master using 4 lightsabers.
Stay tuned as Grievous and Boba Fett burn thiiings, and blow stuff uuuppp.

At the very least I’m surprised the Star Wars helmet series haven’t done his mask yet, it’s quite distinctive and would make a bit of a change from yet another Stormtrooper or Mandalorian recolour
'Time to abandon ship!'
Such a classic set, but it also shows that we need more Revenge of the Sith UCS sets
I prefer General Mortars.

Don't forget sickbay, which is run by Dr. Evil.
Amazing set. I bought it new at eBay a couple of years ago for about €125.
"Jedi. You are surrounded. Your army is decimated. Make peace with the Force now, for this is your final hour. But know that I, General Grievous, am not completely without mercy. I will grant you a warrior's death. Prepare."
I thought this set was about the coolest thing Lego was making at the time, honestly. I've always appreciated Grievous based on his pre-Revenge-of-the-Sith animated version (my second exposure to the character, after seeing concept art for him in an April 2004 Star Wars magazine, when I found that the final five episodes of the series were available to watch for free on the official website in the run-up to RotS), and this set looked like a fantastic rendition of the character.
Seeing him with his four arms spread reminds me of the moment he first revealed that feature in the series, in the very final episode: where Corobb and Moudama, defending Palpatine from his approach, have been able to lock Grievous' two blades with their own. It's a tense moment where you think they might just stand a chance of holding him off... and then, still keeping the blades locked, his lower arms split away from them, reaching for additional lightsabers on his belt. The two Jedi's panicked faces show that they know well just how dead they are in that moment and are powerless to stop Grievous as he ignites two more blades and the whole scene vanishes in a terrifying flurry of blue and green light...
One of my many (many, many, MANY) favourite moments of that series for the way they build it up so effectively...
I didn't ever *get* the set, in any case. £60 still felt like a lot of money to drop all at once, and I was teetering on the edge of my dark age - and later in the year my interests would shift in general - so while I would have loved to get him at the time I never did. And now the other side of my dark age, I'm just not particularly in the market for big Star Wars display pieces (except potentially for ones of a very few specific characters) so I don't see myself considering him even if a similar - and similarly priced! - set did come around again.
Still. I was very impressed by him at the time, for sure.
"Run, Jedi, run. You have only prolonged the inevitable..."
@Prof_Physika:
I thought Nefarious was a Doctor.
@CommanderR3x:
We certainly need a UCS Soulless One.
@ThatBionicleGuy:
See, he shouldn’t be that hard to defeat, though. He fights like a video game boss more than a real sword fighter. That move he did in Ep3 where he’s spinning the two lightsabers in circles may look intimidating, but at some point the blades are pointed behind his arm, and I’m sure Yoda would have just timed it so he could dart in and lop off a hand. Before you know it, Grievous would be down to a single lightsaber, and his fighting style would fall apart. And then so would his body. He was only such a big deal because he really only faced Jedi Knights and not Masters, and he could throw enough offense at them that they never managed to take control of the fight. If he was really that skilled with a lightsaber, shooting him never would have worked, but all he had going for him was the ability to overwhelm with attacks and to do a few maneuvers that wouldn’t normally be an option when facing an organic opponent. And because nobody who faced him lived to talk about the experience, everyone he faced went in fully unprepared for what they were going up against. All of his tricks would have fallen apart if everyone knew to expect them.
I remember seeing it in the shop @home catalog next to the original UCS AT-ST. I must say it aged brilliantly and just shows how with the limited parts of the time you could still make amazing models if you knew what you were doing.

sorry but i bought this set when it came out and i've had it on display the entire time (actually i think i took it apart to clean once) and he has never fallen over and its been what, over 15 years?

Facing Mace Windu does things to you, even if you survive. Palpatine wouldn't have ended up all wrinkly if he'd been facing almost any other Jedi.

I've also had him from release. I've taken it apart and built back together a few times, and there is absolutely nothing incorrect, but he is prone to folding in half. I guess I just like to push the boundaries.

I have also had this built since it came out, and while it has not fallen over during the time its been on display, I do remember having to carefully pick his pose so that wouldn't immediately happen. Between the hips articulation, and the range of motion with the four arms, it's not like it's nearly impossible to get the thing to stand upright, but the more actiony a pose you pick, the more likely it is to overbalance and faceplant. There's also just the unfortunate fact that locking the feet side-by-side really limits how dynamic a pose you can even achieve with hand support.

Still want your Githyanki Sorcerer? I forgot to mention we had a meeting in Temperance last weekend, but we've got State Fair coming up Labor Day weekend.
