Random set of the day: FURNO XL
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 44000 FURNO XL, released during 2013. It's one of 23 HERO Factory sets produced that year. It contains 103 pieces, and its retail price was US$19.99/£14.99.
It's owned by 2,183 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $101.10, or eBay.

FURN baby FURN!
That is certainly a look. Better than Stormer XL, but it does feel like a bit much. You're not a warrior king, you're a robot cop.
BIONICLE IS BAAACCKKKKK
I had the Furno XL!
This actually looks quite good. I think it's the cape.
I'd forgotten that they did an XL version of anyone but Stormer.

To everything, furn, furn, furn
There is a season, furn, furn, furn...
I mean, a cape? And fire is your thing? Are you _trying_ to prove Edna right?
Small for an XL. So how small would the XS version be?

I loved how the robot cops were channeling their inner elemental knights that season.
Being the largest hero of the wave, I was completely captivated by the looks of Furno XL and modified my Stormer to have the same build.
Brain Attack was such a surprise hit, first time ever I have every set from a particular constraction subtheme.
The Fire Knight Mech before The Fire Knight Mech

;-)
The worst XL Hero by far. Lacks armor, weak sword, cape underneath his shoulder joints, THE FACE
Hero Factory always went for a more sci-fi feel than Bionicle but this…this definitely feels like Hero Factory trying to be Bionicle
I always liked the Hero Factory villains, but this was one that, you know, I actually wished I'd bought, he looks pretty cool. Ironically.
Pretty cool. I remember it was a bit expensive though. A lot of the budget went to that cape, which has weird connection spots so it's a bit specific. Still, who doesn't like caped knight mechas?

We had joy we had Furn
we had seasons in the surn,
but the hills that we climbed
were just seasons out of time...
Furno was always my favorite Hero Factory character, and although the original 1.0 version I think is still more ironic, this set is definitely the best version of the character.

And she'll have furn, furn, furn 'til her Daddy takes the T-Bird away... (Second time I've quoted that here recently.)

For anyone who doesn’t get that… it’s your loss.

No.
Just no.
Build-wise he barely qualified as an XL character, he just has a slight addition to his back, otherwise his arms and legs are dreadfully plain - I also am not a big fan of this version of Furno's helmet, the proportions feel off with it widening towards the bottom and resulting in an oversized goofy mouth/jaw. As mentioned by others, the cape and spike armor combo doesn't really fit the alien-invasion sci-fi theme of Brain Attack, making the former rookie, Furno, look like a simultaneously too-threatening and too-goofy kid in stilts. Furno definitely deserved to get an XL set, and this arc would have been fine for it, but the final version of the set feels like a misfire.
A minor bizarre decision with the Brain Attack is the angle to go without projectiles on most of the sets, preferring to go with basic melee weapons and shields (perhaps a vestigial knights vs. monsters story direction that they folded in with the evil factory and brain invasion story directions they were juggling internally), forgoing the primary Zamor/Thornax hybrid system they had been using up to that point in all but 44014. This results in bizarre cases like 44006 Breez wielding a non-firing bow (rehashing 2191) and only two sets having projectiles - *flick-fire missiles,* which even then got neutered in the case of 44010 Stormer as they originally intended to use the "Chi" crystal piece to make them ice crystal shots, but were removed (possibly due to complaints from the Chima team for reusing the part????) and replaced with boring two-stud stacks in the final set that are basically pointless without the aesthetic theming. Furno could have definitely used a projectile on his XL set, but instead we got Goofy Warlord Fire Guy.
