Never saw the show Beastmaster. Didn't even know there was an Ultimate one.

While these sets were nothing amazing, this one is particularly lacklustre. The special leg print is nice, but doesn't set the minifigure apart in the same way as the knights with their transparent armour.
Even the other Ultimate monster sets had mor distinct minifgures from the normal version. Flama got recoloured from red to yellow.

Interesting that the AntiMatter portal from 70170 was reused here.

There are nice pieces in it but the main attraction is definetly the minifigure.

Interesting that bundles of dynamite are somehow integral to the act of beastmastering.

Of all the Ultimate Lava Monsters, this one is probably the weakest. It comes with two orange glob guys (Globes? Globs? I can't remember) but that's about it. Still good for demon army building but not as cool as Lavarina's crazy spider legs or Flama's recolor. Magmar's Ultimate is a bit lame too I guess, but the regular Magmar set was so expensive compared to Beast Master and his build was a bit cooler.

I bought most of these ultimate packs (because I thought they were cool little packs full of interesting and new pieces and weapons), but I remember being underwhelmed by this guy.

When I looked at this set again I thought the portal might be a reissue of the portal print in 1382 Scary Laboratory and 4856 Doc Ock's Hideout, but it turns out that one is slightly different and that's white on trans purple whilst this is lavender on trans purple. It's from 70170 Ultracopter vs AntiMatter like @Noacat1 said correctly. It also appeared in 30604 Cosmic Boy.

Anyway, I agree that this set didn't have as much of a draw as the other Ultimate monsters did. That said, it's nice with a unique figure. That contraption on his back also frees his hands from needing to hold the two chains with his globlin pets (did they also become powered up here?). Fun fact: the assembly on his back goes all the way to the ground behind him.
Also: cowl!!!!

As for the dynamite power-up: Hey, as long as it works!

Yes! You brought the Classic Space helmet back (albeit with a new, less fragile mold), now show Classic Castle the same love!

And yet nothing about his gear seems to suggest beasts, he's more demolitions master if anything

"I wanna master every beast
Searching high and low
Cheese contains a lot of yeast
Except when it's LEGO

Ultimate!
No one masters beasts like me!
Milking them will set me free!
You eat Gouda, I'll eat Brie!
UL-TI-MATE!"

I have no proof that this minifig was ever involved in cheesemaking, but what else would he master those beasts for? Just to log them in his Nexodex or something? What's the point of that?

In 2002 they also created another purple swirly disk solely for 4729.

True. I didn't mention it because it's more clear in its difference because it has magical floating runes :)

By in Netherlands,

Those Ultimate sets were underrated imo.

The theme got a lot of "hate" for the QR code shields, but tbh those were still far more optional and better implemented compared to the Augmented reality seen in Hidden Side / Vidiyo, and the app wasn't forced like some City sets that required digital instructions.

I mostly just can't quite believe the hood / cowl piece was still in use in the mid-2010s; I would have expected that it had been retired since then, especially as the Star Wars hood pieces tended to have in general replaced it by this point.

Where these still in 2016 as notoriously difficult to actually get off a minifigure head as I remember the 90s ones being? I recall it being one of those headwear pieces that fit so tightly that, unless you kinda worked it off at a little bit of an angle, would take the minifigure's whole head with it if you tried to just pull it off like a normal hat piece...

"Still waiting for Ultimate Beauty Master."

She got killed off and written out of the show after the second season because the actress got pregnant.
