My sister got this set for Christmas in 2014. I remember her building it while I was building 75055 at the same time. Good times.

Pretty sure Heartlake isn't in Canada. There's not one thing that's distinctly Canadian.

This was the first "really big" Friends set in the entire line. Sure, it was only a few pieces and $10 more than 3185, but that made it the first Friends set in the $100+ price bracket, which somewhat surprised me back then. It was quite impressive, for its time.

Of course, it was then immediately surpassed by 41101 Grand Hotel in the following year, which showcased the theme's potential for ornate architecture and remained the pinnacle of Friends buildings for several years (until 2022, in fact, if I'm not mistaken).

I was thinking that the gold palm leaves (https://brickset.com/parts/6074322/palmleaf-small) *had* to be unique to this set, so I checked the inventory, and it turns out that not only that, but this set has quite a few other mold/color combinations that never showed up anywhere else: https://brickset.com/parts/6081485/plate-%C3%B863-84-w-4-knobs, https://brickset.com/parts/6074928/rock-crystal-transparent, https://brickset.com/parts/6106576/mini-figure-snow-board-no-1, https://brickset.com/parts/6074915/plate-2x16, https://brickset.com/parts/6070324/turban, and https://brickset.com/parts/6079402/female-hip-w-skirt-5. There are also two unique printed elements, https://brickset.com/parts/6075304/head-female-1-dec-14 and https://brickset.com/parts/6076470/flat-tile-1x3-dec-5.

That's a contrast!

For sure!! Friends and Star Wars were our two big themes back in the day.

By in Australia,

The weirdest thing about these old Friends sets is seeing so many studs on all the flat surfaces.

By in New Zealand,

I need those golden palmleaf pieces.

By in United Kingdom,

That honestly seems like a really decent amount of just stuff going on for ~£80, a lot of bigger Seamus feel hollow

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ok set but the three builds seems a bit disconnected, and all the side builds could really do with a home, and just doesn't feel like a Mall unlike 41450.

“Bigger -sets- feel hollow” is what that should read. Not sure how that got autocorrected in that way

At the time, a lot of sets were 'open' like this where the interior of the mall (or the Mines of Moria, or whatever) was implied without needing large numbers of parts to define that space. The kid could arrange the shops and the sidebuilds as they want. The nice thing about this is that it was also easy to add to the big set with other shops and cafes, as well as smaller sets in the open space like the little stands they did at a similar time.

41101 is still the only "big" Friends set that I have.

And, 12 years later, kids these days would probably say upon receiving this set: 'What's a Mall?'

By in United Kingdom,

Are there any other sets that use headless minidolls/figs in this way? I assume they don't count towards the minidoll/fig count!?

Speaking of shopping, I wonder if the Amazon price tracking will ever get fixed...

I don't know if there are others using the torso and legs together like that, but 42614 uses just the legs and there are quite a few examples using just the hair. I'd imagine that there are probably some where just the torsos are used in the same way as minifigure torsos for clothes. And no, they don't count towards the minifigure count.

By in Germany,

This was one of the biggest Friends sets we bought for our older daughter when she was little. She loved it.

I wouldn't say that. There's lots of Friends sets in forest settings, and I distinctly remember far more forests in Canada than in the US when I was there.

Been lucky enough to get 2 used copies of this set for about £30 each about 6 years ago or so. Had the intention of building a modular. . . . .never got around it. Some nice pieces in there though.

Plus there are no guns, so that is more similar to Canada.

I live in Michigan. Half our state is forest. Canada doesn’t hold a monopoly on trees.

Oh, have you never been to Canada? 41 million population, with an estimated 12.7 million firearms in civilian possession. That’s about one per every three citizens. They do have stricter laws, including requiring you to get an updated gun ownership certification every few years, but I’d guess a higher percentage of Canadians own at least one gun than Americans. Probably fewer have doomsday arsenals, of course.

Yeah the mall was just ok. 41101 Grand Hotel was a masterpiece. One of my favorite Friends sets of all time.

This was an era of really good bigger sets (hotel, houses, school) and smaller sets (small shops).

I really like the early Friends US$25-30 small shop sets like:

41093 hair salon
41006 bakery

Great facades and interior. Really packed a lot in for 250-300 pieces and at that price point.
