Actually, wouldn't last week be a good followup to this?

Don’t you remember how much people complained about the amount of yellow in 10355? Are you trying to start a war?

By in United Kingdom,

This was literally my very first set as a child, and I was too young to know how to build it. So my dad, who had never built Lego before, spent seemingly hours building one of the 3 locos... And then I remember doing an Andy from 'Little Britain', and saying "I don't want that one (the one he'd built), I want that one!" (Pointing at one of the others). I think that day was also the first time I'd heard the phrase "You ungrateful little B******!".

I’ve heard of an A-Train, I guess with this livery it would be a…
Bee-Train

By in Netherlands,

Cool! Though prefer that second model over the main one.

One thing that is surprising to me: Looking at the parts inventory, the set includes two red 1x6 bricks with headlight/grille print (similar to the much more common 1x4 version). Yet seems like neither of the three models shown here use it....

EDIT: the picture thrown me off: Those two pieces are in yellow (only available in this set!), and while you only get instructions for these three models that indeed don't use it, there are pictures for four more models, half of which do actually use it. And dare I say those three look even better than the ones you do get instructions for?

I was about to say that there was way too much yellow for it to be Blacktron. Besides, the red is opaque, not trans.

Since I'll take any excuse to link to a swing classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2G1fKYFgVU

By in United Kingdom,

This one's not hard to piece together on a modern 6x24 chassis. One time I did it (as the C-model) in tan and blue rather than yellow and red, which didn't look bad.

As a child I spent ages trying to replicate the build without knowing the wheel-sets used specialised bogie pieces. The clues were there in the spares pages all along! Love this model.

The VsotW is in its 'train'ing arc

I'll see myself out.

(didn't get a ticket)

In all seriousness though, the Vintage set of the Week really highlights how much of 70s lego was basically model train layout models. I never made the connection before until someone pointed that out a few weeks ago with the small railway warehouse.
Also, it's interesting to see that 1x4 brick with stripes print here, considering that it was later used on other colors in the early minifigure era, most notably Classic Space and space themes up to at least Futuron (they might appear later but at least I know the Stardefender 200 uses them on white bricks). Cool to see it in one of its earlier use cases!

EDIT: I looked it up and I was correct to be surprised, because this is actually the first appearance in a set of that striped brick! In yellow it would appear in 374-1 Fire Station in 1978 and 744-1 Universal Bulding Set in 1980 later, but in other colors its final appearances were in a service pack and in 6440 Jetport Fire Squad in 1991.
Cool to see such a part appeared right before the minifigures did and making it all the way to the early 90s.

It's too late, diplomacy has failed - the first salvo has been fired! Blacktron will reign surpeme!

Well, I am displaying at Brick Bash right now, and I’ve got my BlackTron lightcycles chasing an M-Tron CMF, and I’ve got a City-scale Blacktron F1 car. Then on a group display I’ve got the two large Blacktron Spyballs (Beholders) and the four small versions, plus two of the logo flyers (modified) from the Renegade II. My fellow LUG member Peter has his large Blacktron base that fills two banquet tables, and I think there are a few more instances around the room. By far the most-represented Space themed this event.

By in United States,

I got this set off eBay more than 20 years ago. It was built in the form of the middle engine on the bottom row of the picture above. I chose to leave it that way and get it out and run it every once in a while. The 1970s 12v motor with extra leading and training wheel set is a quite cool part to extend the basic form of the motor (which is pretty similar to the first 4.5v train motor).

By in United Kingdom,

This set is confusing as looks similar to 727 which is motorised but this set isn't. It also includes the same motor cut out plate to allow you to motorise as indicated in the instructions but should be clearer on the box that this is just a push-along.
