Review: 40910 Beef Boss & Skye

Posted by ,

For years now, recurring rumours of the imminent end of Brickheadz have spread among fans. And yet, almost ten years on, Beef Boss marks the 300th Brickheadz figure in the general release of the theme. It’s been ten years exactly since the first Brickhead, if you count the original exclusive Comic-Con editions.

Fans can now get their hands on this pair through the LEGO Insiders Reward Centre for 2500 of their hard-earned points, equivalent to about £16. Let's drop in for a look!

Summary

40910 Beef Boss & Skye, 288 pieces.

Ring in the 300th Brickheadz figure with an anthropomorphic burger

  • Cute designs
  • Fun details
  • Milestone figure locked behind 2500 points

Completed Model

Burgers are a recurring theme in Fortnite and LEGO Fortnite; we’ve already seen the 77070 Durrr Burger (a random event object which appears within the landscape in LEGO Fortnite Odyssey) and the 77076 Durrr Burger Restaurant, which not only included a 3D brick-built burger sign but also introduced the mascot-like Beef Boss character (who owns the franchise!) in minifigure form. The fourth rendition of this popular subject matter is in Brickhead format, but shares many commonalities with the previous designs.

The hamburger head structure is fairly straightforward, with the ingredients stacked vertically and the burger-and-bun assembly attached to the sides via SNOT bricks. We’ve lost the top curve of the bun in this form, opting for the blockier studs-up plate top to maintain the orthogonal Brickhead look.

As much as I love printed pieces, it’s very satisfying to put together this side-built plate and tile technique instead to illustrate the pattern on the chest of his costume. This also allows his bowtie to be side-built instead of using another bespoke print.

Skye is a friendly and supportive adventuring companion, found either as an outfit skin within Fortnite Battle Royale and other game modes, or as a starter villager in Lego Fortnite Odyssey. She has not yet been represented in minifigure form. Her hat is actually her flying buddy Ollie, a ‘faithful floaty friend’.

Since recognisable subject matter and adherence to the formula are the priorities for Brickheadz, designers don’t necessarily have to forge new paths in techniques every time. Skye’s construction is thus mostly straightforward except for her hat. These ‘wings’ are side-built over a 2x4 jumper plate with hollow studs. Closed studs would have made this technique illegal due to their extra thickness from the LEGO logo on each stud.

An extra sword is included; both characters can now defend themselves.

Conclusion

In my recent review for 40911 Mini Pokémon Centre, one of the pros was that it was an Insider reward instead of a Gift with Purchase. On the one hand, it’s nice that there is a variety of collectables available for multiple interests in the reward centre, but if you’re a well-rounded nerd, too many of the sets may be tantalising. This set is the eleventh 2000+ point LEGO reward that is currently available, so it wouldn’t be difficult to rinse a typical fan’s account with a couple of redemptions.

While the two-pack Brickheadz are nice, this set could have easily been a four-pack along with Fishtick and the Supply Llama. Especially given that this contains the milestone 300th Brickhead figure, this set slightly wastes a rare opportunity.

Still, the characters are well done, and a burger head man is a silly enough concept for any Brickheadz collector to enjoy.

Probably the closest thing we'll ever get to Mattel's Food Fighters in LEGO form.

I'm wondering if Beef Boss' eyes will be use in any other Brickheadz.

It’s a pity this isn’t available to buy. How many recent set reviews should open with that sentence? Sigh.

I remember those Comic-Con exclusive BrickHeadz finding their way into the world of lepin & decool. That was an inexpensive opportunity for fans of the range to get hold of them.

I like Brickheadz, sort of. Don't really buy them, but I like them.

The best Brickheadz set doesn't have a Brickheadz number, 41597, LEGO should re-release that set.

I regret not getting that one. A thought occurs to me. A minifigure you make to resemble yourself is called a "sigfig." What would you call a Brickheadz made to resemble yourself? "Sigbrickheadz?" "Sigbrick?" "Sigheadz?"

Have no interest in Fortnite but as cute obscure Brickheadz these are excellent. Wouldn't have paid hard cash for them, but as freebies (Points or GWPs) these are welcome additions to my collection!

imo they should make a new Go Brick Me set that includes some more of the skin tones they've debuted since then

It’s not particularly hard to earn 2,500 points, and even then, it’s nice to have some unique Insiders rewards. The problem I’m sure is that people quickly spend their points when they have them on discounts, but if you keep a minimal balance of 2,500 then it’s easy to grab a reward that you like once it pops up.

It’s a sourdough burger.

It's not hard indeed, just spend a ton of money. That's all there is to it.

Luckily I don't care one bit about this set, but it's annoying enough that Brickheadz are Lego shop exclusives. I only got 5 I think, but would probably had bought plenty more if they were regularly available.

I thought the one initially looked like the weird boy from Stranger Things and also was getting an Adventures in Babysitting vibe. Now that I see the actual character picture, I’m not feeling it at all.

I like the burger one (as well as the goldfish and llama) but seeing the character picture of a muscular humanoid with a whopper head just weirds me out too much, lol.

We've known for decades that Mayor McCheese was a puppet figure. Now, we see the real power in McDonaldland has been Beef Boss (who, incidentally, is the illegitimate lovechild of Ronald McDonald and the "Mayor's" mother).
