Review: 75444 AT-RT Attack

Posted by ,

While many vehicles deployed in the Clone Wars remained in use for a few years after the Empire was established, they were usually replaced with distinctly Imperial designs. However, it looks like the Imperial Remnant has to rely on much older technology, like the AT-RT.

75444 AT-RT Attack reminds me of LEGO Star Wars play sets produced in the mid-2010s, with a great balance of characters for a skirmish and an excellent AT-RT design. Unfortunately, the price of £39.99, $44.99 or €44.99 feels decidedly modern, in a bad way.

Summary

75444 AT-RT Attack, 297 pieces.
£39.99 / $44.99 / €44.99 | 13.5p, 15.1c, 15.1c per piece.

Its price feels absurd, but this is fundamentally a good set

  • AT-RT looks excellent overall
  • Great articulation
  • Detailed turret
  • Nice selection of figures
  • Greatly overpriced
  • Stud shooters are awkward

Minifigures

A number of minor changes have been made to The Mandalorian wearing his Beskar armour since this version of the character debuted in 75299 Trouble on Tatooine, first adding a printed head beneath the helmet and then improving the helmet itself. Now the legs have been revised to include decoration on the feet and knee armour, which was omitted before.

However, the torso has remained the same since 2021 and I see little need for change, as the metallic silver armour looks superb and all the accurate details also remain. I would like to see the pearl dark grey jetpack replaced though, ideally with a pearl silver piece.

The only apparent change to Din Djarin's armour for The Mandalorian and Grogu is on his left wrist, where the whistling bird launcher has been replaced with another device. The minifigure has been updated accordingly, which is an impressive detail. Unfortunately, the only accessory included is a blaster pistol.

Grogu has been updated for The Mandalorian and Grogu, including a far more accurate body piece. Also, this version of the character without his Beskar torso armour is currently exclusive, though I would be extremely surprised if it remains that way because I would consider the plain robes to be Grogu's standard appearance.

This figure cannot really interact with accessories, though there is an anti-stud underneath the body, as on the standard baby figure. The rubber head is perfect, as ever, with lovely moulded detail and printed eyes.

Each new Star Wars film tends to introduce a couple of new troopers and The Mandalorian and Grogu is no exception, with the Imperial Remnant AT-RT Driver. This is a strange design, with armour components from a few existing troopers, although that could be deliberate if the AT-RTs were salvaged and this suit cobbled together.

Regardless of the driver's role in the movie, this helmet element was designed for the Imperial Hovertank Driver and the Shoretrooper in 2016 and I am delighted to see it return, hopefully in advance of more Rogue One sets. The details on the helmet and armour are accurate, with the proper black highlights and padded texture around the trooper's midriff.

The driver wears a kama onscreen and I would prefer a physical part to a printed depiction, as normal. On the other hand, this example looks better than most because the kama is the same colour as the legs, so it blends in. The warm tan head returns from 75419 Death Star, so I am glad to see it again.

The Completed Model

There have been many LEGO renditions of the AT-RT and this example owes much to 75431 327th Star Corps Clone Troopers Battle Pack. The core design is quite similar and this model measures 11cm in height without the antennas, just like last summer's AT-RT. Plenty of details have been updated though, matching the Imperial vehicle in the film.

I think this scale strikes a nice balance between size, detail and articulation. The vehicle is still oversized, though not nearly as much as the version from 75280 501st Legion Clone Troopers, for example. Also, the legs can achieve some dynamic poses, so it is relatively easy to balance the walker.

The legs on this AT-RT are thinner than on other models, but the familiar click hinge joints are included and offer ample articulation. I like the circular joint covers and the armour on the feet, although I do miss the claws from the walker in 75431 327th Star Corps Clone Troopers Battle Pack.

Two stud shooters are attached on the front and look ridiculous, frankly, but at least these are fully articulated, unlike on the previous AT-RT. The detail behind the stud shooters is excellent too, though reliant on stickers for texture on the armour and the Imperial symbols displayed on either side.

Beyond its distinctive colour scheme, the Imperial AT-RT features prominent exhausts located behind the driver, not included on the Republic version. They are accurately represented here, although I have found them annoyingly easy to bump out of position, so I wish you could push them against something to keep these pieces at the correct angle.

Of course, there is space to seat a minifigure holding the handlebars, with a printed console in front of them and a clip to keep their accessory on the back. It seems Grogu will ride in front of The Mandalorian in the film, so the console piece is removable, revealing a 1x2 jumper plate for Grogu to stand on underneath.

This turret bears a resemblance to those around Echo Base in The Empire Strikes Back, albeit with an open top. I like its cylindrical shape and textured base, though the dark tan parts under the snow look out of place to me. Furthermore, the stickered hatches on the sides are clearly a different colour to the white plastic, which is disappointing. I do not understand why this issue is seemingly so hard to solve.

A minifigure can stand on top and grip the handles on the blaster, which incorporates two stud shooters. This weapon has a great range of motion and the entire platform rotates, so you can position it basically however you wish. I love the use of 4x4 quarter cone pieces around the top, forming sharp angles, while the base includes more rounded 5x5 arch bricks.

I know some people hoped the ball joints on the base suggested that another structure would connect to this one, but I think they are just handles to open the turret. Inside are two clips for weapons and a box where you can store the console from the AT-RT, which is a nice inclusion.

Overall

I like almost everything about 75444 AT-RT Attack. This is an impressive rendition of the AT-RT, thoughtfully designed to accommodate any of the characters and with decent articulation, while the turret also looks good. There is nothing particularly complicated about either model, but they are well executed, as are the figures.

Sadly, the price of £39.99, $44.99 or €44.99 is basically a fatal blow, in my opinion. At around £24.99, $29.99 or €29.99, this would be an appealing set and I would definitely recommend it with that kind of discount, but until then, it is severely overpriced.

Nice set, ridiculous price. They might as well have made this the first €1000+ set.

Utterly ridiculous price for what you get.

By in Netherlands,

I think Bricksie called these sort of sets 'shrapnel sets' and I realised when he mentioned he will stop buying them that I have stopped buying them for a while now as well. Fun sets, but just too expensive for what they are. Not a casual playset anymore that you pick up on a whim, or that you don't care that it ends up in the parts heap. Good value is what entices me to buy stuff that I don't really need. I know Lego will do fine without my impulse buys, but still...

We live close to a toy store and me and kid nr. 2 walk to it fairly often to look at the new sets. Although there were plenty of new sets last time, we only walked out with a couple of polybags (some are actually good value)...

By in United States,

$45.00... that's utterly ridiculous. Stuff like this is what I hate about modern Lego; even when playsets are made (because the sheer amount of 18+ is getting to be way too much) they like to slap prices like these on them that make them unaffordable to their supposed target audience. IF, kids are still the target for sets like these that is.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hope this makes more sense when I see the film but it currently looks like something froma kids imagination. We have a sequel character, riding a walker from the Prequel trilogy, attacking a turret from Echo Base :)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I'd suggest putting the price on the list of positive aspects.

After all, it wouldn't feel like a true LEGO Star Wars set otherwise.
;-)

By in United States,

I think I need to institute a personal policy of not buying any more Lego Star Wars sets if I can't find them at 20% off or better, and even that's a stretch.

Exceptions: polybags (usually no pain involved) and Advent Calendars (limited availability and usually on sale anyway).

Very cool set. Wish it was cheaper though. Might’ve thought about picking it up if it was, but as-is, it’s a hard pass.

$30-35 or if it was going to be $45 then a bigger build and/or 2-3 more troopers

By in Poland,

Nice of LEGO to put out a set so perfectly encapsulating so many of modern LEGO's issues - (complete lack of) color matching between prints, stickers and parts, far too many stickers, ugly mould marks, pricing that defies explanation. Truly one for the books.

I think @capnrex101 suggestions of £25, 30€ $30 seem about right, though that would take a discount of more than a third off for the UK price.

It’s a nice set with some nice parts, but who’s buying it at these prices. Maybe it’s one of those ones that’s designed to be discounted?

Looking at what you get I'd say about €25 seems fair, considering it's Star Wars maybe stretch that to 30 tops, even when that already feels like a lot for two small builds. Then with the usual discounts it would become a good deal.

Now it really needs that discount just to get to the "not absurd" territory.

If I'm being quite generous, I could see this as two €15 sets combined. So this effectively would be "buy 2, pay for 3"....

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Suddenly 75431 feels cheap

Gravatar
By in Spain,

25 € would be the ideal price imo. Is just 2 minifigs, one of them has been in 100 sets already, and two side builds to play 1v1. Is bonkers that this is the price of 2 battlepacks with 4 figures and a side build.

Gravatar
By in United States,

$25 is as much as I could feasibly pay for this. The AT-RT is a $15 build and the snow turret cannot feasibly by more than $10. Combine that with only two figures and this is a prime candidate for new Star Wars shelf warmer

As the set is now, $30 USD ideally, $35 USD tops. If they added another build or at least 2 more figures, then the price could potentially be justified. I was actually looking forward to this set but this is the first time I’ve seen the price. At $45 USD, I’m out.

Honestly I see 30 bucks in Lego pricing here with a 20% sale on top of it. It's like $20 too much.

I had to make the same rule. I refuse to pay full price for Star Wars LEGO.

By in Brazil,

The 2009 Hoth Turret, adjusted for inflation, cost 38 dollars. That set had 5 actual minifigures, instead of 2.5, and alongside the openable turret and the two-legged-walker-creature-that-carries-one-minifig, it also had a full barricade with a simple play feature. This set is unquestionably, at LEAST, 10 dollars overpriced, and that’s pushing it, especially with these minifigures.

Missing inexplicably inaccurate clones that we’ve waited for for 2 decades.

LEGO have proven to be incredibly out of touch with consumers in the last few years but the last year haas been incredibly outrageous the sets are blatantly over priced without a valid reason as to why.

Unfortunately I don't think ill be purchasing any of these sets for at least a few months until a discount is found.

I do like this set a lot, but not when I look at that price tag. I haven't bought a Star Wars set since 2024. My money is better spent on other themes. I could get two Speed Champions for the price of this one set.

I feel you. Every once in a while I have to do a Batman set at full price though. They used to be much better here in the US at discounting within a reasonable time frame but now… consequently I have waited almost a year for the Batman and Robin Batmobile to go on sale and it looks like it’s still going to be a while.

Me three. Even 20% off is not enough to counter these absolutely ridiculous prices.
The last Star Wars sets I bought at MSRP were the "Guy Fieri" Snowspeeder because it's so cool, and the $10 Mando and Grogu speeder bike. Oh wait, does the Gingerbread AT-AT count?

Most of my LEGO money is going to City and Speed Champions these days.
Keep mistreating Star Wars fans, LEGO group! It's going great!

Gravatar

I've been playing LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga lately. To me, it represents a time where the theme was fun, imaginative, simple, exciting, and had tons of charm and character.

This set is from another time entirely.

I wonder when this kind of new trooper is getting 4x Battlepacks again in place of 4x Phase 2 Clone Trooper packs or other packs in which Phase 2 Clone Troopers take up slots that could have been used by more interesting variations.

This is what The Mandalorian is at its core, kids playing with their collection of 1978 Kenner Actionfigures.

I do not know how many times or if I even paid full price for a regular retail set in more than 14 years.
Even CMFs are going to that lot since there are sellers on Bricklink that offer them sealed for cheaper than retail or parted out.

I am not so mesmerized by the brand that I can not just wait a few months.

By in United Kingdom,

Like all Star Wars sets, sounds like one I'll be grabbing second hand without the exclusive minifigs so the price is halved. That turret would look pretty good with my other Hoth-themed bits and bobs

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

If you ask me it's just waay too detailed. All that detail falls away against the dark grey and white blobs.

Btw this is one of the most monochrome sets we've had in a while, and not in a good way.

I find it kind of weird how few new designs there are in the merchandising for this movie. It makes for a much less interesting new movie toyline when half of it or more is things you might have already.

The Mandalorian series seems to have decided to suck the color out of everything in-universe and make everything gray, gray, and more gray. Mando is just Boba Fett with all the green in the armor replaced by gray; his first Razor Crest was entirely gray; he sanded all the color off the Naboo fighter; his AT-RT and his speeder bike are entirely gray without any colorful markings; the Fang Fighter has dark gray markings instead of blue and it's accompanied by a TIE Interceptor that's entirely gray; the offworld Jawas in the first season wear gray robes instead of brown and drive a gray sandcrawler instead of a brown one; and the Pirate Snubfighter is monochrome gray, dark gray, trans-black. Who made the decision that the Mandalorian series production design should be so much more drably gray than the rest of the franchise? The new Razor Crest, with its yellow markings, is a welcome change of pace from that.
