It's here because it can't get through the Straight of Hormuz.

It’s not a freighter. It’s a crater. It has enough carrying capacity for one crater.

As classic as this set is, the word "freighter" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

I had to double-check the set name, as I thought it said 'firefighter'. lol

This one floats, my bathtub can confirm it.

I had this set as a kid! Awesome set. It absolutely would not float right without those weights, though. I tried. I thought it was so cool how it had the weights, but you could remove them to play with it like normal on the floor or a bed. It was a great toy!

Great set. Another one to play out Tintin adventures with. I used a marker to draw an anchor on a blue minifigure body to make it Haddock's sweater.

@TuxDoesLegoStuff This series actually has a firefighter boat.

Might as well mention the tugboat too. Colour wise it would be a better fit for the Karaboudjan. Yet somehow I don't remember asking for it.

I really like these early ‘80s boats. Recently parted together the 4005 tugboat - great little set!

It's one of my all time favorites. Colorful and cute. Floats, too...

So simple, so great!

Lovely set. Sets with cargo holds are always fun! Those lights at the mast and navigation tower are quite classy too. Not too big either, meaning it's more versatile to play with. The use of color as a whole is really well done with the red funnel and red door, like so many great sets from the era.

I’m sure everything going on in that picture is totally legitimate but the minifigs look so suspicious about it that I can’t help but feel they’re smuggling something

Cool! Unfortunately never had this one myself, but if it happens to catch fire, I have 4025 ready to come to the rescue!

Is this the only set that officially uses the vertical connection of a plate to a brick? Look at how the yellow crate connects to the light grey plate with ring. (Not sure how this part is called btw, can't seem to find it... But it is a very common part)

By in Jersey,

Got this when I was about 6, Loved that centre section with the below-deck hold (unique to this set) the captains torso is also very rare in black I think?

I had no idea that the ships were not completely new in 1982 and didn’t know until many years later that there was an earlier generation of them in pre minifig days. So you could make a stretched 4015 using parts from 315-2, but also I couldn’t work out why the infant classes at my primary school had a load of these boat hull parts in the mid 1980s, it was only recently I discovered that educational sets existed.

It's definitely not the only set, but the closest I can think of off the top of my head is that 375-2 has brick-built horses with ears that consist of a 1x2 tile pinched between the studs of a 2x2 plate, or how 21309/92176 depict the US flag printed on a clear 1x2 tile pinched between two studs on the base for the lunar lander. But tiles are legal, while plates are illegal. Took them a while to figure that one out, though, so they definitely did pinch plates a few other times. Unfortunately, we don't have any "illegal technique" tags to make them easy to find.

No it's not. That technique is (was) very common.
Sticking plates into other plates or bricks was common, nowadays only flat plates without studs are allowed to be stuck into other plates or bricks.

But the "freighter" is not.

By in Austria,

I had this set together with 4005 and 4025 they had weights that you connected under the hull to keep them stable in water.

Gravatar
By in United States,

that's more like 4012 and how are these fire fighters no signature red color and no fire

Mine too!
:-)

One of my earliest sets. Lots of happy memories.
Only the weight broke. Somehow water got in between the seam and the rust eventually expanded and cracked the black plastic. Still got it, but it's no use anymore.

This boat is just adorable. Sets from the early town era often look primitive today, but this one just looks like the distilled essence. It looks like it would be tons of fun to play with.

I miss those old school sets. This was before my time, but late 80s/early 90s had stuff that I have INTENSE nostalgia for. Now everything looks more detailed, but it doesn't hit the same. It was a simpler time.

More than the boat itself, it would seem.
