My all-time favorite! It's the perfect Space set--not too big to take on a car trip, not too small as to get boring quickly. Modular design? Check. Robot? Check. Rover? Check. Transparent elements? Big time check. Color scheme, suspiciously missile-shaped thrusters, lasers, illogically placed hoses, removable mini-spy nose, and tons of tiles with arrows on them? Check, check, check, check, check, and tons of check!

First big space set. Drove me crazy that the arrow bricks were the same, so one always pointed in the wrong direction.

Still have fond memories of the set, though. I've rebuilt it to spec, I've rebuilt it and modified it in other color schemes, and I've been chipping away at a scaled-up version like the Galaxy Explorer, but it's a *long* way from being done.

A very cool set - and yes, more printed arrow pieces was the original @more cowbell “ ??.

Never had this one as a kid, but pulled a nearly complete copy out of a bulk lot last year - it’s a great set for sure!

I bought a bulk lot of many Classic Space sets last year. Sold most, but this one I kept. It's just too cool.

The front is a bit fragile, but eh, I just want to swoosh it.

Can't wait for a modern interpretation of this similar to Galaxy Explorer!

I would -love- to see it get the 10497 treatment! And I'd forgotten about the reverse arrow on the other brick, that bugged me, too. My story with the FX was that I still remember being at TRU and being forced to pick between it and the Gamma-V, 6891 I made the right choice, but of course I wanted both. I eventually got 6891 years later, but still back when Bricklink was still called Brickbay.

Anyway, I don't think the FX has quite the following for Lego to give it a remaster, but I'm hoping to see 6980 get that treatment. It's a fan favorite and I think would look fantastic.

By in Germany,

As a kid this set totally passed me by. I can't remember seeing it in the catalogues or in shops, so it never ended up on my wish lists. I only found out about it here on Brickset by accident one day, and was totally fascinated that I had never heard of it before.
I immediately looked for it on ebay (where at least here in Germany it also appears to be quite rare), and after some time found and obtained an example in good condition.

I did have 6891 as a kid though, which is kind of similar, if a little smaller.

Oh, many memories with this one. We have been to many missions out there. Right now it awaits further instructions for a periodic excursion to soon-to-be-built livingroom base following family's departure to summer house.

By in Canada,

Ummm...so...where's the "Classic Space Logo"; and no, I do NOT accept "on the astronaut's uniform", as:
A) There should be one on the ship's hull, at least on the tail, and
B) The astronaut might not wearing one...in which case, that's a tattoo...and he's in trouble (ponders: average time one can be exposed to 'space' without protective gear; including: temperature, vacuum, radiation, lack-of-air-pressure...)

This is next on my Classic Space acquisition list, together with 6891 Gamma V Laser Craft. I like how sleek both of them look. Now to find a nice deal with boxes included :-)

From my experience, the price in good condition with box is around 150 Euro, while without the box it's between 70 and 95 Euro. I got mine without the box for a little under 70 Euro delivered. Which to me seemed like a good deal.

My brother had the Classic Space flagship, so while I'd welcome such a thing (being far more attached to that than anything in the blue color scheme), word is that 10497 sales were weak enough that this is not likely to happen.

This was my favorite as a kid. I didn’t have any of the other “large” Classic Space ships, but by golly I had this one, and I played with it like there was no tomorrow!

I’d be first in line if it got re-imagined.

From the numbers I saw on shelves and the discounts (I think it was 50% off at Walmart at one point), I agree. But on the other hand, they've continued the "theme" with the two Blacktron remakes, so I don't think they're done giving us remade Classic Space. I'm hoping it's not that it was unpopular but rather just less popular than they planned.

By in Netherlands,

A great one. My only criticism is that the back is literally just a box and that it's a bit of a hassle to remove the arrow tiles before you can open the back. But it's just a really swooshable and pretty ship. It has a lot of bells and whistles at the front which might be a bit fragile if you play rough with it.

Anyway, I'm very fortunate to own one. Got it for a great deal. To me it will always be commander Masoch's ship (yes, the name implies exactly what he's into) from Lego Space: The Comic. Also featured there is the 6891 Gamma V Laser craft, which is for all intents and purposes the same ship design, just smaller and without the buggy storage in the back (instead it has storage in the center that can fit the robot from that set if you take it apart slightly. I've always liked the way these two sets imply a common design lineage. Are they from a sequential order of design iterations? The same in-universe designer or design firm? Or maybe it's like in the comic and the Gamma V is a (super) prototype.

This set just feels very deluxe, from the six-wheeled rover with its own robot and a jetpack on it, the window on the back, the front half that looks like a very complete-looking individual ship once detached, or the many, many printed parts. Oh, I also like the black and yellow markings on the side of the middle section connecting the two halves. That looks so cool. In many ways this feels like an even more fleshed out Gamma V so that's just beautiful.

Finally, the colors. On its own these aren't the brightest or most eye popping colors (the grey is drab), but it works really well as a welcome departure from what other CS colorschemes were doing at the time. Neither the grey-blue-trans yellow or the white-blue-trans blue colorschemes, but a cool mix.

The first of those was a GWP, and those get shipped out regardless of whether anyone wants them. All you have to do is make a qualifying purchase of other stuff. And the Rengade II didn’t fare any better, from what I’ve heard. I don’t recall it hitting 50% discount, but I also don’t remember seeing it at mainstream B&M chains like Target or Walmart.

This looks better then any Star Wars ship because it sparks creativity not found anywhere else but in the lego portfolio!

At least it's still something space-related, and not, say, a Town police station.

It must be a nightmare to swoosh this thing in reverse. Look at all the arrows you have to turn around!

My first lego set. I think I was only 3 when my parents got this for me. Crazy. But I loved it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My last classic space set; $18.74 at Hills Department Store. It still resides in my collect, although those early "claw-type" arm ends were very thin and prone to snapping. The more recent ones are a little thicker and more durable. Just not the same shade of grey.
