The most annoying character from The Legend Reborn movie.

Long ago the world of Spherus Magna was divided by the Core War. Violent conflict over Energized Protodermis, a magical substance in the planet's core, resulted in the undoing of the planet. In the end it split into three smaller worlds, the desert world of Bara Magna, the ocean moon of Aqua Magna ,and the jungle moon of Bota Magna. The giant robot Mata Nui was sent out to study the stars and alien cultures, in order to both literally and metaphorically reform the world.

The survivors on Bara Magna struggled to survive. A combination of resource scarcity and memories of how horrible the war were inspired an alternative method to resolve conflict, the Glatorian System. Under the Glatorian System, if there was ever debate over ownership or resources the rival tribes would send in their Glatorian warriors into (typically non-lethal) arena combat, with the winner's tribe taking the spoils.

Kiina was the Second Glatorian of the Water Tribe of Tajun, often called upon when their Prime, Tarix, was busy. Kiina quickly became cynical and discouraged with the lifeless desert their world had become, and longed to leave it for another. She was convinced alien life was out there, and their future was with them among the stars, resulting in many thinking she had gone insane. She was more bombastic and quick to react than most other Glataorian, which fueled these claims.

But eventually, Kiina's prayers were answered. Thanks to... all the 2001-2008 story of BIONICLE, Mata Nui's spirit was trapped within the Mask of Life and exiled from his old robot body, which was commandeered by series antagonist Makuta. The Mask of Life eventually landed on Bara Magna, where it made a new body for itself.

When Kiina learned Mata Nui was a genuine off-worlder she offered to help him learn more about the Great Beings (and so, his own origin) by showing him a secret lab of theirs she found, on the condition he take her to a new world once he had enough of his power back. Some of the more notable things Kiina accomplished while following Mata Nui were forming an unlikely bond with the Agori Berix, and helping take down the Skrall leader Tuma.

Eventually Mata Nui got a new giant robot body, fought Makuta in his old body, and reformed Spherus Magna. As a result of the fight, Makuta was killed and Mata Nui's soul became too weak, going dormant into the Mask of Life once more. The two giant robots fell lifeless, and those inside the GSR emerged to join the reformed planet. While Mata Nui did not literally take Kiina off of the planet, the restoration of the world she once new and migration of people from the Matoran Universe into it created such a lively and resource rich environment... he had brought a new world to her, and she thought that payment enough.

Kiina's main weapon was a Vapor Trident. By default this was little more than a three-pronged spear carved from bone, but using the Mask of Life Mata Nui granted it elemental water powers. While it didn't make Kiina quite as strong as a genuine Toa of Water, it gave her a massive edge over the Skrall army. As with most Glatorian she usually carried a Thornax Launcher, a gun that shot spiky explosive fruit.

I know the Inika build gets a lot of flak for how standardized and boring it made post-2006 BIONICLE models, but I always though Kiina was one of the stronger sets of the era. Her torso is a custom build that gives her a shorter and slimmer frame than the other Glatorian, and her chestplate is actually a leg piece. While its not pushing the system for torso-builds/figure-silhouettes as far as things like the Barraki or Makuta Mistika did, it's still much appreciated variety.

Geez, I don't even remember this guy. I think, by this point, I must've checked out of Bionicle lore completely.

Yeah there were a few sets in the Glatorian waves that looked like they’d actually tried make the figure more characterised and fun to build, and Kiina was definitely one of them

Kiina is a cool build. The torso is unique but at the same time not too terribly complicated. I never owned the figure in full, but I handled one once from a bulk lot. Some of the arm socket parts had been broken so I never experienced it in full. But the thing I mostly remember was that it was a bit awkward due to the fin parts sticking out towards the back on the arms and legs. The helmet is also surprisingly long, which seemed to be common on some Glatorian era helmets (Skrall, Atakus, Tarduk). And the double trident felt a bit spindly because hitting an opponent with either end means having to point the other end all the way to the back. And the hand elements don't have too much up and down motion, mostly side to side.

All that said, it seemed to be a fun figure with a nice unusual color scheme of dark blue and medium blue. The torso is nice.

Fun fact: the fin parts were made for this set but were used the next year in black in 8079 Shadow Snapper as the shell.

At least consider eating a sandwich, Kiina. Your mother and I worry about you.

Second-to-last set I got during Bionicle's classic run, and the only Glatorian. I mostly chose to get her (as a gift, albeit one that I specifically requested) for two reasons: firstly that she was the one with an actually unique torso build, which by default made her more interesting than "Inika build no. 25", and secondly because I'd started to appreciate lady characters more than I had as a kid (not to say I'd ever disliked them on principle, I just hadn't given gender as a concept much thought at all honestly), so I wanted to get Bionicle's last new girl character in particular, especially as she was the only female character that year.

She was... she was fine. Probably a few years earlier and I'd have thought she was a very cool set, but while I appreciated the unique torso build it really didn't do much to kick my Bionicle interest back into gear. Plus, as others have said, the long spiky armour pieces were... quite a choice that made it trickier to pose her than I'd have otherwise expected. Still, I thought it was neat to have her, in any case ^^

I have to say, on the subject of Kiina, I really don't feel like her portrayal in the Legend Reborn movie did many favours. In contrast to popular opinion, I didn't find her particularly annoying as a person; but the way her introduction is her bursting in to basically proclaim that the world of Bara Magna is a dump and she would do anything to get out of it... I feel it cements for the audience that there's nothing to actually care about in this new world, especially when none of the other characters contradict her; and for a soft reboot location that really needs to sell us on the world, telling us right away that even the people living in this place hate it, is pretty much giving the audience license not to care and thereby hurts the rest of the movie.

Compare that to Bionicle's early years; everything we see in the Mata Nui Online Game - and even Mask of Light, for all its flaws - shows us that despite its dangers, the Matoran love their home on Mata Nui. Even beyond the visuals, it tells us that this world is a special place, a place worth protecting, and gives us reason to invest in the story. I'm not saying that setting a work in an inhospitable place by default makes it impossible to care about, but you have to do harder work to get the audience invested in why that place matters; and thanks to Kiina TLR completely shoots itself in the foot on that front.

Could a better movie have pulled it off? Probably. I feel that TLR really couldn't; but that's just my two cents though.

8982 Strakk and 8978 Skrall barely count. Without the 90° technic connector they're just Inika builds. I would say so are 8695 and 8986 Vastus.

A funny coincidence.

@ThatBionicleGuy a) I think they’d basically given up on the “soft reboot” concept by that point. b) Bara Magna was essentially a post-apocalyptic wasteland and had been so for 100,000 years. c) Kiina’s role in that wasteland was to fight others of her own kind in arena combat in order to win the scarce resources needed by her chosen home village. But said village was ready to turn her out into the Wastelands to wander homeless the second she failed.

I think I’d be hard pressed not to be cynical too.
