©2008 LEGO Group

Today's random set is 5612 Police Officer, released during 2008. It's one of 46 City sets produced that year. It contains 21 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$3.49 / £2.49, which equates to about US$5 / £4 in today's money.

It's owned by 7,635 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at Brick Owl, BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $6.90, or eBay.

He must be upset because he was overdressed for the job he got assigned. This looks a lot more like formal wear for some kind of event, but then he had to fill in for some underling's absence. And he has to babysit the dog, too.

Police Officer with Dog? That’s a much, much better name. Had to double check too because those look mysteriously like Old Dark Gray plates, but since it’s 2008, of course, they aren’t.

By in United States,

I had this when I was little. The little speed tracker/checker confused me so much because it just looked like the speed limit sign had a gun.

Now I'm picturing a sign that just straight up shoots you if you go 51 in a 50 zone... which with how poorly thought out and hastily implemented "safety" measures are these days may be less of an absurdist concept than it sounds.

If this was Star Wars themed, the road sign would be classified as a droid and the dog a baby Wookiee.

By in United States,

Two very different kinds of officers today.

I love that piece. It and https://brickset.com/parts/design-2516 are great for making into just about any tool or weapon you can imagine.

Nah, dogs are Ewoks. Haven't you ever seen a Shih Tzu?

By in United States,

If bought multiple, now you have a police battlepack

By in New Zealand,

Is the dog the one speeding? Is that why the speed camera is pointed to him?

By in Canada,

For a minute, I thought: 'Is he wearing/attached to ALL THAT?!?!':)

Also: Due to 'Lego City' budget cuts, he IS the Police Department: S.W.A.T. (check), K-9 (check), Traffic (check)...:D

Rebuilt this a couple months ago. Good parts, but rather anemic

By in United Kingdom,

Look out, that street sign’s got a gun!

By in Turkey,

Good little set, helps a lot in a town to fill the traffic. I'm not too fond of the grumpy look on minifigures though.

And it’s in surprisingly few sets, presumably long out of production.

By in Australia,

I thought I had this.

But this comes from a time when Lego was producing that dog piece by the factory-ful.

And it's not like Lego police officers are *ever* in short supply, so.

One of the original entries in the line of boxed impulse sets that started in 2008 and lasted through 2010. The 2008 impulse sets (six City, three Castle, three Mars Mission) were clearly identifiable by their numbers in the range 5610–5621.

Of these sets, this one always interested me the least. The police officer was ubiquitous back then and although the dog was new in reddish brown, it didn't sway me. The side builds also felt very bare-bones. And finally, the main image is posed in a way that lacks excitement. It's not visually made distinct that there are two side builds because the minifig is awkwardly placed right next to both.

The back of the box does more to make me feel something is going on:

That said, it does have some nice things to deck out a police officer with. The speed sensor is a fun inclusion. And at the time street signs were hard to come by, so it's good that one's included.

I'm missing handcuffs and a bullhorn though.

I was 100% sure he has a hefty backpack with extensions that include the dog.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You know your time is up when they give the droid the gun and you are left holding a lollipop. To depress you even more the dog and street sign are now the most valuable parts.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

So two law enforcement figs today?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

So this cop is trying to book this dog for speeding? Wow. Move over, Bad Cop - we've found Worst Cop.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I had this set as a kid. Not much going on here, but the dog was nice.

You are exceeding the speed limit! You have 10 seconds to comply..... You have 5 seconds to comply......

Yeah, https://brickset.com/parts/design-30035 hasn't been produced since 2014. Amusingly enough, its official name is "Scanner Tools," not "Scanner Tool."

Are they, though?

On first glance, it looks like the cop is somehow holding the background build, like some kind of Terminator-level super-gun, complete with a blue laser sight, and either an ammo count, or letting you know it's a .50 caliber, and an attached communications array.

Percentage chance of hitting you at close range, with the gun mounted way off to the side like that. Pretty sure the dog’s going to be fine.

They're acting on orders of the long Thumb Of Justice.

I know it's supposed to be a speed camera but it sure looks like a gun....

If that was how speed limits were enforced, there would be far less speeders

Police budget cuts in Lego City? No way! In addition to the regular police teeming throughout the metro area, there are police in the mountains, the forest, the swamp, the (prison) island, and the sky. And this year, the police got their own railroad, and there are even police babies!

We have police coming out of our ears, but very little housing for everyday citizens. Everything is being paid for with $100 bills.... which means it's no wonder why there are so many "criminals" (People who can't afford their bills must be being labeled as such in LEGOLAND.) We even have Super Secret Police to spy on the populace courtesy of TLM sets. The chief of operations of this agency is, of course, Bad Cop. (There is no Good Cop - those are now total works of fiction!) Now all we need is a Big Brother-like figure... oh wait, we already have Lord Business.
