A feather in his cap. I always put these hats on with a point at the front, and the feather to the side. It seems odd looking at it like this.

I don't mind this era of design, but the faces are pretty meh to me.

Same. So it covers your face more and drains any spray off.

So...it looks like the tricorne design was not so much about the fashion of the hat itself, but to allow you to wear a hat that was, firstly, easy to tuck under your arm when you went indoors, but mostly about being able to show off your fancy powdered wig. And apparently soldiers did turn it so one flat side was facing directly to the right so it would be fully clear of their musket. Which makes a certain amount of sense. I mean, a front-line soldier at the time was basically a dead man walking, purely by the odds, but no reason to throw in the towel by just making it even harder to defend yourself (and by "defend" I obviously mean shooting the other guys quickly enough that there's nobody left to shoot back, because lining up like tightly-packed carnival game targets is about as anti-defensive as you can get without throwing down your weapons and walking up to let them shoot you at point blank range). We see that same sort of habidashilosophy with Johnny Thunder's hat, where just the right side of the brim is pinned to the crown so it doesn't interfere with the use of a rifle. That is definitely how that style of hat was worn. If you wear it with the folded brim facing forward, it just makes you look like a moonshiner from the back woods of the Appalachian Mountains.

Also, in this illustration from 1688, the foot soldier wears a tricorne as we've come to expect from Hollywood, but the mounted soldier clearly does not have one point facing forward. It's hard to tell if he has a flat side facing right, or facing forward, but you definitely don't see one facing to the rear:

Heh. You should see some of the historical bicornes worn by officers. Some of those hung almost down to the shoulders. Turn them so they keep the water out of your face, and you won't be able to see anything directly in front of you. Also, apparently some tricornes had the sides laced up such that you could undo the laces and let the brim spread out in a full circle during the rain, kinda like how ushankas have flaps that can be folded down for when the cold weather turns extra cold.

You can tell he’s an officer because he’s been allowed to grow a moustache. And dashing example of facial hair it is!

This head (Rascus', from Knights' Kingdom II) was already a few years old at this point, and was designed for a specific named character, so it's not quite in the same style as others from the time and has a bit of an early-2000s Dreamworks face going on.

It's sort of interesting that this face had so much more use post-KKII than the other characters'.

Is he a vampire or just in need of orthodontic work?

Hard to tell when you can’t see his teeth through the closed lips.
