Review: Mixels Series 5 Frosticons
Posted by TheBrickPal,
The Mixels are back once again with nine more quirky characters this summer! I'm TheBrickPal, Mixels Wiki founder and self-proclaimed expert on the franchise, and I'll be showing you readers the world of June's Series 5 over the next few days. The Mixels are, as ever, priced at £2.99 or $4.99, which in my opinion, is the perfect cost and well worth it; especially if you look to be a completist of the theme.
After a few adventures on Mixel Moon, the story moves back to Planet Mixel, aka Mixel Land, to focus in on two new tribes: the Klinkers and Lixers. However, similar to Series 4's Infernites, we also get to meet some new additions to the Frosticons. This ice and snow tribe was the headliner of Series 2 a year ago. At first impression, these just seemed like a lazy attempt at recreating the popularity of 2014's Slumbo, Lunk and Flurr. But how do Krog, Chilbo and Snoof really stack up to their cousins? Read on after the jump to find out!
41539 Krog
Krog, no doubt based on a frog, has one big mouth in terms of both looks and personality! This guy has a large appetite, similar to the Fang Gang and Series 6's upcoming tribe, the Munchos. His printed cycloptic eye on a transparent radar dish, combined with the trans-blue minifigure weapons from Galaxy Squad (also used as Slumbo's hands) jutting out at every angle, is rather striking.
Speaking of pieces, Krog comes with some really cool (no pun intended) ones, such as Medium Azur Exo-Force arms and a 2x2 jumper plate. The latter could prove to be pretty useful, though I'm sure someone will find use for the former. Medium Azur itself is a common color in these Frosticons and it is pleasing to see it in abundance. His entire upper-body is also on a ball-joint, which can convey a ton of expression!
Krog also comes with a Nixel, who has three spiked ears or strands of hair of which I am not a fan of. The Nixels, for those who don't watch the TV specials and shorts, are the Mixels' evil little counterparts. They are lead by King Nixel, with Major Nixel as military commander, and are sworn to destroy all fun and creativity. They do this by stealing Cubits; the square objects allowing Mixels to Mix, Max, and Murp! Overall, this is my least favorite of 2015's three new Nixel designs, but it is indeed necessary to collect it in order to grow a large swarm and oppose your collection of Mixels.
As for Krog, his parts selection is fantastic, but I am not as keen on his character as I am with the other two Frosticons. Aside from aforementioned upper-body, he is not very poseable, either.
41540 Chilbo
Chilbo, on the other hand, is the best of the bunch, and definitely comes across as sloth-like! Although those very prominent eyebrows give him an almost evil look, all he really is is a total know-it-all who could blabber answers to any question all day long... and put the others right to sleep.
His frozen brain looks great, but I am particularly a fan of the articulated eyes. To achieve that, the set uses two "ball joint with half-axle" pieces that have been used to attach the feet of Mixels such as Flain and Mesmo, among others.
There's more, though! In similarity to Vampos from Series 4's Glowkies, Chilbo's head is on a ball joint, which offers a decent amount of neck movement. And don't forgot those claws, which can be posed as well! Finally, the buck teeth totally complete the character.
Overall, Chilbo is definitely my favorite of the new Frosticon group, with a plethora of awesome pieces.
41541 Snoof
As Snoof views the world with wonder and a sense of curiosity, he looks rather fit to explore the Frozen Volcanoes, doesn't he? The idea of a living snowmobile is wonderful and I applaud the designers for that.
With posability due to ball jointed ski feet, arms, neck AND head, a lot of fun is to be had with him. This places Snoof right in the middle of my ranking for the Frosticons. The open mouth and minifigure head eye both show plenty of character. Also, his big cheeks can't help but remind me of the adorable Flamzer, so bonus points for that!
I can't exactly forgive the two open (and grey) studs towards the back, though. However, the ice jets coming out of his posterior through the creative use of flick-fire missiles, and the ice blades from Ninjago (also used for Flurr's breath and Lunk's snot), more than make up for that.
Verdict
As the Frosticons are my favorite Mixel tribe of all time, I set high standards for the additional Frosticons of Series 5, and I was by no means disappointed. All of them are very unique and truly set themselves apart from their Series 2 cousins. I have made it clear that my pick of the three is Chilbo, but who is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below.
Stay tuned for the rest of my Mixels Series 5 reviews!

The new Mixels do look great, looking forward to them being available in the UK.
Chilbo is my favourite of these 3 too, but I think the Klinkers look to be my favourite of the 3 tribes in series 5.
> Krog, no doubt based on a frog
Maybe if you remove his arms and change his legs, I'd see it. As is, though, he resembles no frog I've ever known! The teeth might be preventing me from seeing it too, now that I think about it.
I agree, the Klinkers are the best ones... you gotta love steampunk LEGO.
Amazing review GN!
Nice review, you put some effort to write it. Mine personal favourite is Chilbo, but in parts Krog.
Very well done! It's helping me in considering which Frosticon I'm wanting to buy for myself!
Awesome review!
I hope I can get these guys soon...
Nicely done, GN.
Oh look, a whole trail of Mixels Wiki users. XD
I really dislike the "Nixels" - those silly little black things that come with some of the Mixels. I always thought it was Lego's attempt to bulk up a packet for a Mixel that had less pieces than the rest. The Nixels aren't displayed in my collection.
Order from favourite to least favourite - Snoof, Chilbo, Krog.
