Review: 60113 Rally Car
Posted by CapnRex101,
60113 Rally Car is one of the smallest of the new City sets but has received significant attention due to the inclusion of four printed lights. It is unusual to see anything quite so specialised appear in a City set but they look fantastic.
60053 Race Car seems to have proven very popular since it was released in 2014 and I expect this one will match or even surpass that set for many fans. The parts selection is superior and I think the model is too. Read on and see whether or not you agree...
Minifigure
The driver included features a brand new torso design which is printed on the front and back. The 'Airborne' branding has appeared twice before in 60019 Stunt Plane and 60027 Monster Truck Transporter but has not been presented in this style before.
The matching red legs look great, although I do wonder how long it will be before we expect every minifigure to have printed legs, such is their growing frequency. The helmet is fine too but a printed design would have been even more impressive while the head has been reused many times since it first appeared in 2012. I think the repeated use of the same heads is a flaw of current City sets and I would welcome the introduction of several new prints.
The Completed Model
A chequered flag is included as scenery which is welcome, although I do not think this was a necessary inclusion. It consists of three pieces and is decorated with stickers on both sides of the flag.
The rally car itself looks fantastic. I love the black and yellow colour scheme while the sponsor stickers are very realistic and cover almost every available surface! The Octan logo makes an appearance on either side, making this another obligatory acquisition for Octan collectors.
When the set was revealed towards the end of last year it was the four lights on the front which attracted the most attention. These printed tiles are currently exclusive to this set and look splendid, authentically replicating the light bars seen on real rally cars. The eyes and eyebrows are a lovely touch!
Another printed element is used for the dashboard inside and there is a steering wheel found in here as well as room for the driver to sit comfortably. The bodywork is impressive and there are some attractive lines which run from the front to the back with few breaks. I think the spoiler is a little too large and the white skeleton arms used to mount it stand out more than they should, but neither of these criticisms are significant and I still like the model overall.
This style of wheel hub has not appeared in white before which is a significant draw to this set as this is a versatile design which suits City scale cars perfectly. I hope to see these used in many more sets in future as the current wheels, like those used on the car in 60119 Ferry, are totally unsuitable in my opinion.
Overall
This is a superb set. The design of LEGO City cars seems to have improved quite dramatically this year and this is probably my favourite yet. The proportions seem to be about right and there are also plenty of details included which rarely appear outside of larger sets. Hopefully this trend will continue and designers will perfect cars in the same way that they have found ideal building techniques for creating trucks.
Given the price of just £7.99 or $9.99 this is a worthy purchase in my opinion, perhaps even in multiples! The model is excellent and there are plenty of useful pieces included which can be used to modify existing vehicles or create entirely new ones.

This set is really realistic! I never thought I'd see a minifig scale Rally Car by TLG, let alone one this good!
I really dig this set, mostly because of those printed headlights, they really make it look very realistic for City standards. Only thing I don't like, is that it doesn't really look like a normal rally car, there's too many spoilers and the ride height looks weird. To me looks more like one of those hill climb cars with crazy amounts of power.
I guess I don't know what Rally cars look like considering that is the least appealing part of this build to me is those headlights...very odd.
Anyway, thanks for the thorough review.
Might have to pick one up! Thanks again for reviewing! That Airborne torso is cool!
Wow... might just get this set! Love it. And I normally don't even collect City!
A favourite set of mine this year!
Mine is sat on the table waiting to be built, the lights detail just made me smile and I love the WRC so all is good!
Is there a spare for those printed lights in the set? Most of the time there is with 1x1 elements...
What would be cool... if they could figure out how to print random numbers for each decal set.
Woah, at least give us a warning for that spoiler!
All well and good - it's a great model. BUT ... there definitely needs to be some alternatives. Extra sticker sheets for a variety of finishes would be a start. Ideally though, some different but complementary models. A bit like the Speed Champions theme. Maybe we need to campaign for a Rally Champions theme - with WRC licensing!
The face on that minifigure looks familiar. I think his weekday job is police officer. I agree about the white skeleton arms holding the spoiler; they would look better in black. The back of the car looks weird from certain angles too, like there's a chunk missing from it. Other than that, this is a great looking Lego rally car and I'm definitely buying one!
^^^lol
The front of the car looks amazing; the rear with that spoiler is a bit of a fail. The one-piece spoiler would have been a lot better. The roof overhangs the back in the way a hatchback's spoiler would be fitted anyway. But I do love the light covers.
The back end of a rally car is usually crazy with spoilers, although in recent years they are toned down relative to the old Group B monsters of the '80s.
Maybe I'm just not a car person, but I much preferred the speedboat, this year, to the rally car.
I really like the design of the 6-wide cars this year, but this one isn't doing it for me. Too many stickers, ugly spoiler... and the speedboat is much better. But Police Pursuit has a fabulous-looking police car in it, and I might get that. Even though I usually don't buy City due to the prices and lack of originality, that is a great design there.
I don't know if those cars are supposed to have a spoiler that looks like that - it looks like it was tacked on the end as an afterthought, and the connections seems too skinny compared to the rest of the car. Otherwise a fantastic-looking set.
Has anyone else noticed this set kinda looks like Tanner Foust's Beetle?
^ IMO it looks more Polo than Beetle, but the colour scheme certainly took inspiration from the Beetle rally car. Non-licenced LEGO sets like City usually take bits from a variety of sources to avoid copyright issues. This channels the typical WRC car without being a copy of any one vehicle.
I will definitely get this one, and the I`m gonna rebuild my 60053 Race Car a bit to WRC, so the race can begin!
@Kantspell: Yeah, I noticed that too. The shape is slightly more like his Fiesta ST (which had the same colour scheme) IMO.
Considering how much I mucked up picking up 60053, I'll definitly try to get this one.
Got it today and it was a fun build. For a 10 euro set the extra's are a bit lacking when compared to similar sets from years before, but that's made up by the fact that the car is bigger than in most of those sets.
6 wide, or actually 6+ wide due to the "footboards", is someting to get used to, but it does kind of feel like the right size. The wheels are a big trade up. I fitted them to one of the standard 4-wide models and those look far better with them, tires sticking out less and the rims more fitting with today's wheel sizes on real cars. So, actually kind of a bummer, because this car makes me want to rebuild al my cars to 6 wide and swop al the wheels over too... oh dear.
There was a quality issue with my set, though: one 2x4 plate in yellow was missing. Luckily I had one spare lying around, but this is now the 3rd time a piece was missing from a Lego set I got in less than a year...
thanks to you guys review I have just bought one
Those printed lights looks just like Electrode from Pokemon, the might have some application in a Pokemon MOC perhaps?
Bought this set the other day, its a great little set. The wheels in white are awesome. I totally concur that these wheels are much better for cars of various sorts than the traditional style (which works great on trucks or buses or whatever but not so great on cars)
I also concur with the statement that LEGO needs more head prints. Or for that matter to make better use of the head prints they already have. This head http://brickset.com/sets/containing-part-6076154 is really cool but has only appeared in one single set (an Arctic set). It should be put in more sets.
Nice little set. Love how the look is reminiscent of a typical "profile" racing sportscar. The stance does look odd though - like the front end is set up for an asphalt stage and the rear end is set up for one on dirt. Easily fixed for dirt, with a 2 x 2 plate so the front end is the same height. But not sure how easy it would be to lower the rear end without having the actual set in front of me. I will keep my eyes open for this one.

hey captainrex101 is it worth $10?
I like it but I am not sure if it is worth $10.
