Review: Batgirl mini-doll
Posted by CapnRex101,
LEGO had a significant presence at New York Comic-Con this year, focusing on the upcoming LEGO Batman Movie as well as the DC Super Hero Girls range which was revealed earlier this month.
A Batgirl mini-doll was given away at the convention and we have been able to acquire one so we can bring you the first DC Super Hero Girls mini-review today!
Mini-doll
Mini-dolls have been a subject of controversy since the first Friends sets were announced in 2011 but I am delighted to see something unusual in the form of a Super Hero rendered as a mini-doll. Batgirl looks splendid, with an eye-catching black, yellow and purple colour scheme which is nicely accented by Barbara Gordon's bright orange hair.
The combined cowl and hair element has been created for this figure and it matches the animated character model very nicely. The rubbery hood extends from the back of the torso and incorporates a pair of tiny bat ears as well as a hole for an accessory should you wish to add one. Batgirl's wings are made from a soft vinyl material and they attach around the neck and hips so are securely held in place. They look great from the front and the back, although I am slightly concerned that they could be torn during play as the wings are fairly narrow towards the centre.
Nevertheless, this is an excellent figure on the whole. I love the stylised domino mask and the designs on the chest look splendid too, as do the laces on her boots. The earlier Batgirl minifigure from 76013 Batman: The Joker Steam Roller is based on different source material so it is difficult to compare the two figures, although I really appreciate the brighter colour scheme of the mini-doll.
Overall
I am looking forward to the DC Super Hero Girls range and the Batgirl mini-doll is a perfect teaser as it encapsulates the essence of the theme as a whole. A bright and somewhat fantastical approach has been taken to Batgirl but she is still immediately recognisable and this figure is an excellent recreation of the character model from the animated series. If the other figures follow that same design ethos then I will be very pleased.
You can expect more Super Heroes coverage next month as the first LEGO Batman Movie and DC Super Hero Girls sets are released in North America, so keep an eye on the homepage over the coming weeks!

Is it possible to put the minidoll hair at a regular minifigure?
What set is the riddler from? The only set I know of is with him in his orange outfit.
^^ Yes
I'm guessing the Lego Batman Movie Arkham Asylum set will have alternate bodies for all the criminals?
Please include a pic with normal fig with her Hair/mask piece!
The wings are quite lame. They could use normal plastic piece with new torso with hole.
Where did you get the Riddler? The head, hat and hair look like they're from the new Arkham Asylum.
I love it. I want it.
I like the pic with the two batgirls, the minidoll and the minifigure. It nicely illustrates that you have to be retarded (or born in 1900-something) to find the minifigure the more attractive.
@bok2 Not sure why you think you have to throw around disability slurs to make a point.
@CapnRex101 Nice review, and the photos have made me want one!
@bok2: So I'm either retarded or born in 1900-something, then? Because I think the minifig is way better...
I understand these are for a completely different audience. But I think the tiny vinyl wings are really lame, and so is the mask... it's too small and thin! What's the point?
The costume itself is really sweet, though, and I don't think it could work on a minifigure.
The wing design here is brilliant, IMO. It's flexible, not too bulky, doesn't require any specialized new molds, and looks authentic to the character. This style of wing attachment works nicely for Bumblebee as well. The hair and costume are likewise very character-accurate, and the face has lots of personality.
From a character design standpoint, I'm also quite grateful that the design here balances style and practicality. It echoes her 2014 costume redesign from the comics which got lots of positive press for prioritizing utility over sex appeal while still remaining distinctive and heroic-looking.
@bok2: I understand your sentiment but there's no need to use a slur to get your point across. As they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
While I don't condone @bok2's turn of phrase, he is right: the minidoll looks far better. It looks like a girl, as it should, for one thing.
I like the minifig way better. This particular minifig has been one of my favorites since it came out. The combination hair / cowl piece is just awesome.
Riddle me this, riddle me that, does this mean that there is secret in arkham asylum?
Minifig is better... minidoll looks like she wants to bite my throat out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCXX4WUY_Gg
I just ran an impromptu focus group consisting of my five year old daughter. She prefers the minidoll because "she looks prettier". So that settles it!
I do love the way my daughter just mixes and matches her/our minidolls and minifigs so I've never understood people whining that regular lego is too boy-centric or friends insultingly girly. I just wish minifigs and dolls were the same height. Articulation problems are obviously a bummer, but I guess that's unavoidable at that scale.
That minifigure is ugly, holy cow. Minidoll is far superior.
So that's how mini-dolls stack up in size againts mini figures. Nice review CapnRex101.
@NameChanger: Supes hides behind a pair of glasses, so it's not that hard to believe given the universe they're in...
Usually, I prefer the minifigure over the minidoll, but I must admit the Batgirl minidoll is superior. If it were next to her upcoming LEGO Batman Movie variant, it may have been harder to choose.
I was surprised o see that the purple seen from the front was actually part of a hood from a hoodie and not a pair of novelty ears/horns. not really good or bad, but not something I was expecting from the front only image, though looking now, you can make it out a little bit from the from pic here.
One thing I do want to point out with the comparison of the minidoll and the standard minifig bat girl: The Minidoll Batgirl, from a purely outfit design standpoint, FEELS more like Batgirl even if you don't factor in it being a minidoll. It give the appearance that, aside from the belt, it could have potentiality have been a costume she made herself, is often true of many of Batgirl's origins in Various DC stories. It certainly looks more like a classic version of Batgirl. Compare that to the the standard Minifigure version it's show against here, which is basically the more militarized and detailed Batsuit but made for a female. The modernized armored outfit version isn't bad, per say, but unlike Batman or Robin who have a huge LEGO costume selection, this minifigure of Batgirl has somehow been the only Batgirl minifigure released prior to 2017.
Good news is that upcoming Joker Notorious Lowrider and the LEGO Batman Movie Dimensions story pack both come with a standard minifigure of batgirl that resembles the minidoll in costume design more than the previous Batgirl Minifigure.
Now if we can only get Lashina, Bubble Bee, and Lena Luther as standard figures to...
Ah nice. Minidoll all the way for Super Hero Girls. Never before has LEGO touched a (non-original) theme where this design was so accurate and perfectly suited to the source material. Thanks for the preview.
I'm loving these dolls! Can we expect some of the male super heroes in mini doll form as well? Or will they only be selling sets with female figures in them?
I like that minidoll a lot. I just wish there was a way to evolve the mini-? form to a next step, taking the good bit from both the minifig (better articulation, less teenage look) and minidoll (look actually like a human, though chibbi-esque).
Guys, you can find that riddler minifig here.

great new minidoll, love the colours the,ve used to represnt yvonne craigs batgirl suit from the 66 batman series, my kids love the friends and elves theme so i,ll be getting this for them in her bat jet set in january.
WHERE DID YOU GET THAT RIDDLER!?!?! He looks amazing!! What set does he come in!?!
I am against minidolls.
@bok2: dislike times 1.000!
Your comment is about as arrogant and plain ugly as one can get. I'm not even going into whether I prefer the minifig or the minidoll (because not being a fan of the source material I don't care for either of them), but deriding the opinions of those who don't agree with you, plus belittling people with disabilities is really nasty. Shame on you.
@tallblocktoo: There are male characters in the Super Hero Girls franchise, but we may have better chances of seeing them in sets once more of the main heroines are established.
@Faire: There are some mini-doll parts with less teenage-looking proportions, mostly used for parents in LEGO Friends sets. The woman torso (http://brickset.com/parts/design-92816) has a fuller chest than the standard girl torso, and the man torso (http://brickset.com/parts/design-92815) has a more muscular chest and shoulders.
It would be great if they could someday introduce a "Mini-doll 2.0" with better articulation, but I don't know what the chances of that are. The mini-doll hips may be too narrow to have a separate hinge for each leg. And arms with posable wrists were already tested during the mini-doll development, and a lot of girls didn't really like them. :/
Oh and one general remark about minfigs versus minidolls. Even though our daughters like the nicer and more realistic shape of minidolls, they prefer minfigs for play and posing, because they are much more articulate than minidolls. A minidoll with turnable hands and independently posable legs could surely be done and would be much appreciated.
I think this minidoll looks great.
And also does anyone else think that the Riddler minifig looks a lot like the Riddler in the Greg Capullo Batman zero year comics?
That is the Riddler from the Lego Batman Movie!!!
Batgirl minidoll looks great!! (in comparison, minifig loses).
DC superhero girls bodes well.
Not to sound negative, and not to veer too far into what I have to say about the mini-dolls, that design just looks pathetic to me. I understand its not Lego's fault but bat wings instead of a cape? Seriously? That looks ridiculous. Also, shoe laces? What? And what is with the random splatters of color? Every common color that is associated with Barbara Gordon is here, but it seems spiradically placed. I will admit however that the heaf, while not a mask, is awesome looking. And where'd that Riddler come from?
@Aanchir Thanks!
The Riddler has his own set in the LEGO Batman Movie theme. So he will be in Arkham in a jumpsuit and in normal clothes for his other set. It seems a lot of characters are having multiple versions of themselves. From what I've heard, there will NOT be multiple suits in the Arkham set, so just look for their other sets when not in jumpsuits.
And I am guessing they did take some design cues from more recent Batman graphic novels. They are taking things from every avenue for this new movie. Didn't you see Two-Face is the Batman 1989 version (essentially).
Also, the minidoll looks good, but I prefer the minifigure and I will prefer the newest minifigure from this next wave of figures. Although I do like the hoodpiece. I will have to see how that looks on regular figures.
Honestly, I prefer the Minifig version, but the minidoll is kinda cool. the wings are too thin though, couldn't they have been rubber or hard plastic.
Friends style minifigures hair and accessories are compatible with the traditional Lego minifigures. I have a few friends sets and switch their hair often because they have better styles.
I'm a little disappointed that these came out in the friends style figures and not Lego minifigures. Though this does match the design of the DC action figure dolls better so the overall look is cohesive. They look really nice and I probably would have liked these when I was little. I was always obsessed with doll miniatures.
Good sets and these will make a lot of kids and kids at heart very happy :)
I think I like the one from 2014 better, but it's still pretty good
