Review: 5004408 Rebel A-wing Pilot

5004408 Rebel A-wing Pilot was revealed during the summer and has appeared in several countries around the world since then but with little consistency. However, it is currently available with Star Wars purchases of over £25 or €30 on shop.LEGO.com in the UK and Europe so I have finally been able to acquire this splendid minifigure for a review!

Minifigure

The minifigure is based on Phoenix One who was killed during the siege of Lothal, although a similar character model has been seen on numerous occasions since then. I like the red flight suit and this is accented by a grey life support pack on the pilot's chest as well as a white belt. The head is currently exclusive to this minifigure and is printed with a grim expression on one side as well as a yellow visor on the other.

The helmet is printed with an exceptionally detailed design on every side and this includes a dark red Phoenix Squadron insignia. There are some more mechanical features on either side along with a black microphone beneath the pilot's mouth.

My favourite part of the helmet only visible from the back where the pilot has decorated his uniform with some TIE Fighter markings to represent victory tallies. I am struggling to recall another item of minifigure headgear which is printed with so many intricate details! He comes equipped with a standard blaster pistol.

Overall

2016 has offered a tremendous selection of minifigures and 5004408 Rebel A-wing Pilot is one of my absolute favourites. The design is faithful to the show and includes some brilliant details but is also sufficiently generic to slot into any Star Wars model and makes a nice addition to 75150 Vader's TIE Advanced vs. A-wing Starfighter so I certainly recommend this polybag if you are able to find it.

Great figure, but you have to buy Star Wars sets or related Star Wars products to qualify for this.
Just so you know :)

@adamkehoe73 Some Toys 'R' Uses will sell it to you flat out; that's how I got mine. (I see you're located in the UK, in which eBay might be a good solution if no retailers are willing to sell this as a standalone item).

I never make it to TRU (too far out of the way, plus past bad experiences), so I was unaware this was available there at one point. I may have to venture out sometime. Doubtful if they have any though. They seem to never have anything.

This monifigure looks great, I am interested in: Y-Wing, Scarift Battle, Imperial BP, Rebel Trooper BP and just the Trawn minifigure.

Great fig but real shame about the lack of leg printing. Wish I'd bought more b-wing planet sets when they were massively reduced as the pilot in that set had a great body/legs despite a rubbish helmet. Love the b-wing and a-wing helmets. Annoying that the Rebels figs have to have slightly different and more basic printing (e.g. the Rebels stormtroopers).

On a related note, I got two of these guys today by buying a few battlepacks purely because I was able to score a snowglobe and gingerbread man as well. I spend more than I should on lego, but no way will I be paying anything close to retail for the rest of the Star Wars sets. They are soooooo expensive. Looking at the Thrawn set, you'd assume it'd be £20, but it's double that. Absolutely nuts. Can't resist battlepacks day one, but the rest will have to wait for an Argos or Tesco 3 for 2 sale.

Please let us know if the new phantom can dock on the Ghost!

By in Sweden,

Im looking forward to Battle on Scarif. It looks like another solid location-based Star Wars set, but the price point is way too high in my opinion. Good review anyway.
^It looks like that from what I've seen on the Brickset Flickr group. It looked pretty good, too.

Some leg printing would have been nice.

Totally unrelated, I just found a new 2017 City polybah at Target. It's a little red car, like an old fashioned jalopy. I think its number is 30359, but I'll have to check. It's not in the database yet.

Nevermind, it's 30354 Hot Rod, and it's in the database.

By in Canada,

I love this minifig. Canadian Toys R Us stores were giving these away with a $25 Lego purchase about a month ago in addition to 20% off many sets and I had coupons for $10 off $30 Star Wars purchases at the same time. I think I ended up paying $13 for a carbon freezing chamber, among other ridiculous deals plus a few of these minifigs thrown in too!

If I knew more about Thrawn I might be more willing to spend on the new Phantom but I usually only keep informed on 'canon' characters and he's only recently been introduced to it (maybe there's been more episodes of Rebels in the UK lately/soon?) I'll have to wrangle some discounts out of somewhere because £40 is way too much for a new design of a set that once cost £20-£25. Got the A Wing pilot poly when I was getting some other SW figs on BL. I agree it's a very nicely designed figure.

Phantom mark II isn't a redesign... you should definitely watch the show. The main episodes are up there with the best of Star Wars.

Definitely a very nice figure. Excellent detail on the helmet. Although I would liked to have seen some leg printing (perhaps pockets and/or harness). I feel like this would actually have made a better May 4th giveaway than the First Order Stormtrooper they had this year.

Looking forward to Battle of Scarif and Phantom 2 reviews- Just arrived in the UK so looking forward to getting to a couple of LEGO stores and punishing my wallet!!

I'm going to a LEGO store tomorrow. I fear I may buy some Star Wars LEGO. Must resist :-D

You also get the Gingerbread minifigure for free if you make a qualifying purchase (2 days left). Since Lego shop SW products are so overpriced compared to the best retailers I still don't think it's worth it. There's also a possibility this minifig will be sold separately when this campaign is over.

Great looking minifig. Definitely have to acquire this at some point. And I'm looking forward to a review of Duel on Naboo.

The local Toys R Us (we're in LA) had them, along with the First Order General, set 5004406. There were quite a few of each. There were other polybags as well including Ninjago, Lego City & Friends.
