Review: 41594 Captain Armando Salazar
Posted by CapnRex101,
41594 Captain Armando Salazar is the second of the two Pirates of the Caribbean BrickHeadz which have been released and is, remarkably, my favourite of them! The drab colours are not conducive to an impressive display model but I love his unusual hairstyle and the printed elements look splendid, particularly on the waistcoat and jacket. This figure has therefore proven to be a delightful surprise.
The Completed Model
The figure comes with a black display stand, as is the case for all the BrickHeadz sets. It consists of just four pieces but looks good and includes a printed 2x4 tile which is decorated with the series number. It would have been nice to see some kind of specialised print with the Pirates of the Caribbean branding but serves as a satisfactory display accessory.
Captain Salazar is a ghostly figure and this BrickHeadz model is appropriately eerie, with a pale face and cracked skin which is represented by a printed 2x4 tile. Round tiles form the eyes and these are backed by dark bluish grey plates to further convey Salazar's grotesque appearance. His hair is swept to one side so consists primarily of curved slopes and it looks great, accurately replicating the design of the minifigure found in 71042 Silent Mary.
The hair continues on either side of Salazar's head and his shoulders are covered by 2x2 tiles to depict epaulettes. This is very effective and I like the 1x1 quarter circle tiles on the wrists which match his light bluish grey waistcoat. A pair of printed buttons complete the front of the torso and these are particularly useful pieces as they are only available in four other sets, all of which are considerably more expensive than this one.
Turning the figure around reveals a surprising feature as part of Captain Salazar's head is missing, revealing his innards which are bizarrely represented by dark tan, white and trans-green elements. I am assuming that the trans-green brick is intended to be Salazar's brain as most BrickHeadz figures include a pink brick here. This is very unusual and is presumably accurate to the movie, although I have not seen an image of the character from this angle so cannot be completely certain.
The other side of the head remains intact and includes a single ear as well as some more hair. This monstrous creature possesses many supernatural abilities but still carries a simple cutlass for close quarters combat. He is seen wielding a rapier in the trailers so that would have been more appropriate but this weapon is fine.
Salazar's muted colour scheme does not attract attention as some of the other BrickHeadz do, although he still looks lovely on display with his nemesis and compares very favourably with the character as he appears in the film.
Overall
I expected little of this figure and am very pleasantly surprised by its quality. The clothing looks great and I like Salazar's swept hairstyle as it distinguishes this figure from the rest of the range quite dramatically. The printed elements are used to good effect and the open section of the head is highly unusual, if a little gruesome.
We have yet to see this villain in action so it is difficult to recommend this figure over other, more famous and recognisable characters. However, based on the quality of the model this is a worthy purchase and I actually prefer it to 41593 Captain Jack Sparrow, albeit only very slightly and based in part on the superior construction of Captain Salazar's hair.

I wish there were some transculent pieces on his backhead, instead of the grey bricks. That would make him even more accurate to the movie trailer, and give him a more ghostly appearance.
Anyway, this is my favourite Brickhead from series 1.
Great work on the review, looking fowards the Silent Mary review.
I just now realized a quarter of the brickheadz is a captain!
The back of the head is a pleasant surprise for me! Not one of my favorites, but I will still pick him up to go with Captain Jack.
@Casper_van-hobbes lol :)
I feel like the green brain thing might be a spoiler...
This one looks to be a winner!
I did not expect the gap in the back of the head.. it's actually kinda gross! That's a good thing! I love it.
Great review!
Does his head stick out a little more than the others or is it just an illusion?
The exposed insides on the back of the head are disgusting but I love it.
He's pretty nice, I'll pick him up to go with Jack later.
I can't help but look at this and think it's Edward Scissorhands.
I like this Brickheadz design, particularly the hair, but the curse (of some sort) seems remarkly similar to previous movies. It's like Salazar's a mixture of the zombies from Curse of the Black Pearl and the rotten fish people of Dead Man's Chest (where you could see their brain), but with added ghost! At least Stranger Tides had 'alive' Spanish soldiers, Blackbeard's (mind controlled) crew and mermaids to add some new foes.
A good deal of these comments are about the exposed brainz, so I'll throw in my two cents. Surprised to see brainz. That'll go down in Brick Heads history.
Looks like you reviewed most, if not all, Brickheadz already. Let's move on to other sets and themes, pleeease... :/
The first spanish actor represented in Lego!!! ;-)
I do not like brickheadz too much, but I will definitely buy it…
Horribly different.... like it's horrible, but good on Lego for producing something different.
Awesome! Lego + Pirates of the Caribbean + Edward Scissorhands = EPICNESS!!!
