Review: 30546 Krypto Saves the Day

30546 Krypto Saves the Day is currently available with purchases of DC Super Hero Girls products at shop.LEGO.com in many European countries. The polybag contains 55 pieces, the most appealing of which is Krypto who has only previously appeared in 41233 Lashina Tank.

A bright green Kryptomite is also included to contend for the pink crystal and each character comes with a small vehicle. On that basis this tiny set seems to offer impressive play value and it includes some interesting elements too so is bound to be of interest for existing DC Super Hero Girls fans as well as new ones.

Minifigures

Krypto is Superman's pet dog so is accordingly adorned with his master's famous insignia and wears a bright red cape. This presents an attractive contrast with Krypto's white coat, as do the bright blue eyes which are also very striking. I think the figure looks adorable and it certainly fits with the established aesthetic of the DC Super Hero Girls range. Hopefully Superman will also appear in mini-doll form at some point.

Every DC Super Hero Girls set released so far has included at least one Kryptomite and that trend continues in this polybag. The 1x1 tile at the centre is printed with a sly grin and the limbs consist of trans-clear, green and trans-neon green elements. This is quite unusual as translucent colours have not been mixed on previous Kryptomites but it looks marvellous and a white stud shooter completes the figure.

The Completed Model

Krypto rides a small jet which consists primarily of red and dark azure, recalling Superman's traditional colour scheme. Naturally, it seems a little odd that a flying character like Krypto would require a plane but it may simply allow him to travel more quickly while carrying large artefacts such as the trans-pink crystal included. Presumably this is intended to represent a small chunk of the enormous amethyst found in 41232 Super Hero High School.

Official images of this set suggest that stickers are used at the front and back of the jet. In fact, the 1x2 slope is printed with Superman's symbol and the vertical stabiliser is also printed on both sides! These designs look great and I like the small windscreen, although it provides no protection for Krypto as he stands on the yellow jumper plates shown below.

A stud shooter is fitted on the right side and an exposed stud allows you to stow the crystal during flight. These spoil the aerodynamic shape somewhat but serve only to increase the play value which is always welcome in a polybag like this. In addition, the wings are attached using hinges so they can be switched between anhedral and dihedral configurations.

The Kryptomite's purple jetpack is only a little smaller than the plane. Like Krypto's jet, its wings are adjustable and two trans-orange tiles underneath represent rockets. The mischievous creature is held in place by a single stud but remains quite secure and his feet line up perfectly with the underside of the jetpack so he will stand properly, rather than being weighed down by such a heavy accessory.

Overall

This is a delightful little set. Krypto is undoubtedly the highlight but it is nice to see some unique printed parts and a new Kryptomite too. Furthermore, these two characters and their vehicles offer excellent playability and the level of detail is relatively high given that the polybag includes just 55 pieces. It is definitely worth acquiring if the set becomes available in your area, although its appeal may be limited if you already own 41233 Lashina Tank.

By in United States,

I grabbed this one a few months back (I believe I found it at Toys R Us).

As Krypto and Superman are some of my favorite characters, I really hope they make a "standard Lego dog" version that can hang with the normal minifigures. (You know, like the German Shepherd animals they've done with the police sets.)

And if it came with a removable cape piece? Even better!

By in United States,

I like the way that Krypto looks. Very cute and friendly. I think he'd fit in with minifigures as well.

By in Australia,

I picked this set up on eBay this week. I love that the pieces are printed (and not stickers), and although I don't really get why Krypto needs a little spaceship, it's Krypto! He was worth the price of admission alone, and it is a very cute little spaceship.

By in Czechia,

Most likely the only Super Hero girl set I will get.

By in United States,

I purchased mine in TRU, I've seen this poly in every TRU I've visited in the past few months.

A nifty little set and well worth the cost! My son got a kick out of it once it was all built up and now Krypto hangs out with Superman and Wonder Woman in his minifigures.

By in United States,

I'm glad I picked this up at TRU a few months back. I'm not really into superheros, but Krypto looks great in so many settings; a toy store moc, a kid's bedroom moc, or a Halloween moc beside Trick-or-Treaters. I sort of regret not getting a second one actually...

Fun little set which I believe I obtained with a purchase of another Super Hero Girls set.

By in Russian Federation,

I love the idea, but Krypto's mold is awful.
