Review: 76082 ATM Heist Battle

The Marvel Super Heroes theme has been running since 2012 but Spider-Man was first introduced to LEGO almost a decade earlier as products were released in conjunction with the acclaimed first two films in Sam Raimi's trilogy. 76082 ATM Heist Battle is reminiscent of some of the original sets, depicting a fairly mundane crime from which super villains are absent.

I find this quite charming as Super Heroes sets have rarely tackled such subject matter in recent years. Furthermore the two robbers included are wearing Avengers masks, just as in the first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, which is a delightful touch. However, the relative lack of major characters may detract from the appeal of this set, particularly given the impressive roster found in the larger 76083 Beware the Vulture.

Minifigures

Spider-Man has undergone a slight update for the two sets based on his latest cinematic outing so features new symbols on the front and back of the torso which are accurate to the film costume. I think the eyes might have been altered too as the silver highlights around the edges stand out more clearly than those on the figure from 76067 Tanker Truck Takedown, although this may be attributable to a simple variation in the printing.

76082 ATM Heist Battle

The rest of the figure retains the 2016 design, sporting a red and dark blue suit with a webbed pattern covering both sides of the head and torso as well as the arms. It looks marvellous and I particularly appreciate the web cartridges printed on his belt. The only feature of the suit which is missing are the web wings beneath the arms but there would be no way to include these without the creation of a new torso element and such a feature would be unnecessary in my opinion.

A pair of white power blasts are included to represent web bullets. These are launched by pressing on the tail, building tension in the hand of a minifigure before firing to a range of about a foot. It seems inevitable that this function would put stress on the hands and may cause them to break after repeated use but I am not aware of any incidents at the moment.

The set also includes two Masked Robbers who are attempting to conceal their identities by wearing Avengers face masks. They do not resemble the characters in the film very closely as the Captain America mask is a different shape in the first trailer, covering the mouth as well as the eyes. Nevertheless, these unique head prints look great when viewed independently from the movie and I really like the bruised alternative faces as we rarely see designs like these on flesh tone heads.

The Captain America crook shares his torso with the minifigure from 71286 Michael Knight while the other minifigure wears a black jacket seen on criminals in LEGO CITY. Neither is an exact match for the scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming but they work well for generic characters and it is nice to see a rare torso which is only available in one other set.

The Completed Model

Plenty of advanced Chitauri technology was salvaged following the Battle of New York and some has been put to criminal use in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as well as the Item 47 short film. It is clear that another trove will feature in Spider-Man: Homecoming as these criminals are armed with an enormous ATM buster and a chain launcher. The laser cutter features a stud shooter and is adorned with a DODC sticker, like the weapons found in 76083 Beware the Vulture. A lime green motorcycle is included as a getaway vehicle which is fine, although a vehicle which could seat both villains would have been even better.

The bank is very small, measuring just twelve studs wide and eight studs deep, but makes good use of that space. A fire hydrant is situated by the door while the branding above the window is formed using clear-backed stickers. The blue, grey and dark tan design is reasonably realistic and would not look out of place in a city setting but I think the dark tan takes the variety of colours a little too far.

The door opens but was obviously locked when the robbers attempted to break in as the entire window panel can be toppled by turning the black Technic element to the right of the image below. This could represent an alarm system since it includes a trans-red 1x1 round tile and you can also attach Spider-Man to the exposed stud as though he is climbing the wall. Another exposed stud is visible towards the back of the building and a third appears on the opposite wall along with a web.

Two hinges allow you to open the bank and provide easy access to the sparsely decorated interior. The cash machines which the criminals are targeting are green to match the dollar bills inside and each one is decorated with a keypad sticker. Unfortunately the vertical surfaces are undecorated and the dispenser lacks a working cash slot which is strange as even CITY sets include that level of detail. However, I like the blue internal walls and the bank branding appears on three more stickers inside to match the front of the building.

Turning the model around reveals a jumble of yellow elements and a red Technic liftarm which clearly indicates a play feature. It looks dreadful from this angle but is not visible from the front and you could construct a display to ensure that these yellow pieces were concealed. Still, it is disappointing that a more consistent and neutral colour scheme was not maintained throughout the entire set.

Thankfully, the functions work very well so I think the brightly coloured pieces are excusable to some degree. One ATM can be pulled out of the wall entirely and towed along using the trans-purple chain while the other tips forward when you slam down on the red lever at the back, hurling bundles of cash out into the public area! Both features are enjoyable and the inclusion of six printed bank notes seems rather generous.

Overall

76082 ATM Heist Battle is certainly a pleasing play set but offers relatively little to interest older Marvel Super Heroes fans. The masked robbers are excellent and I love the new Spider-Man minifigure but the minifigure selection found in 76083 Beware the Vulture is far more appealing and it is difficult to justify purchasing this smaller set unless you already own the larger one. Moreover, the bank seems very small in relation to the price of £19.99 or $19.99 and certain areas seem unfinished to me.

However, this set is packed with interesting play features, all of which work very well, while the motorcycle allows you to act out some exciting chase scenes. For that reason I think younger fans will enjoy this set but 76083 Beware the Vulture is even more satisfying in my opinion and I would definitely recommend that offering over this one.

In just2good review the play feature on the back did not work! Weird...

Those masked heads will work great for a trick or treat Halloween scene!

nice review. I honestly think there was no point for this set to be made. The minifigure selection is nothing special and there are plenty of better banks to get in Lego City.

Incredible that Marvel ha S made a complete building on one of its Lego sets yet the City line bank feels incomplete (I am currently making arrangements to complete it).

Got this as soon as it came out; like with the Catwoman set from TLBM, I've modded the bank into a more complete building in its own right, which was weirdly the main draw to me for getting this set. With a few mods it's quite a neat little build.

It's strange that the play function worked well in this review, but didn't work at all in the reviews by Jang and Just2good.

I think the robbers look great (and Spidey, of course), but the rest of the set, nah. Maybe I'll get it if it's heavily discounted.

@GaryLau I was going to say the same thing. I've been trying to build up my trick or treat gang and these guys would fit perfectly. Their alternate faces would also be great in a hospital MOC. Somehow I've never gotten hold of any dirt bikes of this style, and the little ATM could be modified to fit into my city. So although I don't collect Super Hero sets at all I might have to pick this up, especially if it comes down about 5.00 in price!

I can't possibly imagine myself getting this set. The only parts that interest me are the motorbike, the rare purple elements and the robbers. The only reason why I'd imagine myself getting this is to make it something better, but i don't think I have the parts to do so.

@Brick_Knight and @The creative box - I saw those reviews so tested mine carefully and have encountered no issues. Admittedly, you need to press the lever down quite sharply.

I got this in the target sale last week, and the draw for me was the masked faces (As GaryLau said, perfect for trick-or-treating, perhaps as teenagers who don't put as much effort into their costumes to shepard the better costumed kids from Collectible Minifigures) and I liked the little ATM shop quite a bit as well. I don't know if the rest of the world has them, but often I see two or three ATM machines from a bank in a shop front in the middle of a shopping center. The rooms usually have a glass front and are an otherwise empty room. This looks just like it (I should post a picture). So both of those were a big attraction to me.

Also, just like for CaptRex, my play features work pretty much perfectly. In particular, the damaged ATM that throws the cash works very well--if the front is opened, my kids and I have gotten it to throw money a good 18 to 24 inches, which is amusing when it hits a wall or the side of another building. And when closed, cash blasts everywhere, like you might see in a movie. It didn't originally work because I had used two black pins in the mechanism instead of the instructed 1 black 1 grey, but worked great after the correction. As Capt Rex said, you do need to give it a pretty sharp rap, though. Still, looks great and lots of fun.

Came for the masked minifigures, stayed for the exploding ATM. I just built the Beware the Vulture set yesterday and think it's a stronger set for the character selection as well as the solid builds (very solid truck). But I wish for a "smaller" MCU film that got two sets that you had a different Spider-Man in one of them. Would really have liked to seen LEGO resurrect the WyldStyle hood mould to make a hooded Spider-Man.

Capn, thanks for reviewing this set. For me, it's a tempting purchase.

I suggest to you including a link at the bottom to JANGBRiCKS' video review since people have made comments on it and that he's Brickset's video reviewer.

It would of been better if they made a set with spidey trying to re-weld that ship together which is from a scene in the trailer, or a set based around
that scene of him gliding over the oblysk in the extra under arm webbing with the police helicopter,

Capn, you mentioned that the ATMs don't have screens, but it looks to me like the sticker is a screen on the left and card slot and note dispenser on the right...

Oh, and thanks for the review. I'm not interested in the set, but really want the Michael Knight torso!!

By in United States,

LEGO could have used a printed version of the Man-Bat arms to have a version of Spidey with web-wings

Gravatar
By in United States,

^those seem to cause controversy whenever they are used, however it would be nice considering the normal Spidey already appears in a bigger set.

To answer the question 'Why would someone buy this set over the Vulture set?' the answer surely is 'Because it's less than half the price'.
