Review: 40266 Mini Keepsake Box
Posted by MeganL,
One of the giveaways this month at LEGO brand stores and S@H is 40266 Mini Keepsake Box. It's a gift with purchase (GWP) in the U.S. with a $25 Friends purchase. Is it worth picking up?
The set comes in a box, which was a pleasant surprise for me, since many GWPs come in polybags. A bonus was that it doesn't use one of those annoying pushtabs to open, so you can just unseal the box and not ruin it on opening. Inside the box you find two unnumbered bags, three 6x10 white plates, and instruction booklet and a rather crumpled sticker sheet with six stickers on it.
The build is very straightforward. The front of the box has some nice decoration with bright purple flowers and 1x1 round plates in medium lilac. I think the colour scheme is a bit of a mishmash with the purple, green and blue.
There isn't much to the back of the box.
There are two compartments in the keepsake box. The larger of the two compartments can be accessed by lifting off the top of the box. There's some nice detailing on the box lidsimilar to what's found on the front. The lid can be easily lifted off thanks to the bright yellowish green plate with bow 1x4x2/3 piece that's used as a handle.
The lower compartment is a small drawer that pulls out. It has the same kind of handle as the lid. It's easy to insert and remove the drawer thanks to the placement of a couple 1x2x2/3 lime green pieces which round the edges in the back.
There are stickers included in this set. They're intended for various panels on the keepsake box lid. The graphics on the stickers feature different Friends illustrations that have been seen on several Friends sets. In addition, the symbols for each of the Friends are included: paw print, music note, star, heart and flower. I didn't apply the stickers as I don't think they added that much to the set (though girls who enjoy Friends will love them) and my sticker sheet was incredibly crumpled when I opened it. This is the sheet after considerable time under a heavy weight trying to flatten it out.
Overall thoughts
While I think the colour scheme is a bit disjointed, I'm not the target demographic. On the other hand, I think the 8-10 year old me would have loved the colour scheme and the entire box. It's the perfect size to store all kinds of little things - jewelry, stickers - even some small pieces of LEGO!
It's a nice little GWP even if you aren't a 8-10 year old girl. The price point to get it (it's free with a $25 Friends purchase) is very reasonable, and at 105 pieces it makes a nice little parts pack if the colours are of interest to you.
The offer for U.S. S@H and in store lasts through the end of October, so there's still time to pick one up. (Edit: from the sounds of the comments it may be out of stock at S@H. I picked mine up at a brand store last weekend, and they had a lot on hand then. Your best chance to get this is now likely your local brand store, if you have one.)

For sure my little 9 old one will love it. To store her Friends and Elves jewels, hair pins or so. And with 25 euros purchase only, much more accessible than 40178. Of course no specific parts neither minifig, but valuable in my opinion. And as a child, she likes stickers (when not crumpled!) and bright, sunny colors. Thank you for review.
I am not seeing this online... already out of stock?
@MVives. I got one in an actual brick and mortar Lego Store two days ago. But when I bought some sets online yesterday, it was not offered. Instead of this set, they offered that Friends tic-tac-toe set with rabbits.
So yeah, I think they are already sold out online. Or maybe they never had them online in the U.S.?
It looks impressive just for the parts my daughters love the friends theme and have 56 sets so this they would love especially my teen daughter.
Very cute. I love the functionality in sets like this--the Christmas snow globe from last year had a similar drawer feature.
Yes, OOS online for US SAH. Last I checked, SAH increased the threshold for the tic-tac-toe polybag from any friends purchase to $25.
Edit: I got some online. At that time, SAH had five promos, if you ordered properly. 40266, caveman, tic tac toe, lloyd, and VIP.
Needs more colors
This set was given away, in fact TWO identical boxes, in some regions for free (no purchase required) in stores this past summer provided you had the right coupon from the Lego calendar and showed up together with a friend. That’s got to be one of the most generous Lego campaigns ever. I got 2 of these back then and they are very much loved by my kids. I hope to see something similar for 2018. Thumbs up Lego!
You are nearly two weeks late as they sold out about 45 minutes after double points happened.
I think it's cute. Great way to add these colors to my LEGO box.
Toys R Us in the UK are selling it for about £8, or free when you spend £20 on Friends sets. TRU are also selling the Rogue One droid polybag for £4.99.
These were indeed free with a calendar voucher in Europe (bring a friend, get one each), and are now being sold for 3.99€ in Lego stores I believe (though stock may be gone by now).
It is also free with a £20 Friends spend at TRU UK. (NB: The Friends Advent Calendar does not count as Friends lego for this offer).
Always useful to have a few more spare bricks, for turning Friends Facade sets into 4 walled buildings for my city.
I'm fairly sure I saw this in Ikea today!
A dresser Mrs. Nesbitt would love!
Here in North America, this item has been "sold out" since even before the Double VIP points promotion. I figured I would be greedy and get the FREE promo AND double points. Instead, I had to pay $13 plus shipping to buy it on Ebay in order to get this set. Needless to say, I never did place a LEGO.com order this month. Just a heads up!
