Review: 5004941 Classic Minifigure Collection

Last year's Bricktober packs contained a selection of figures assembled using existing parts, many of which were introduced for the Collectable Minifigures range. 5004941 Classic Minifigure Collection also takes inspiration from past series of Collectable Minifigures, although these figures all feature brand new elements.

Minifigures

The fifth series of Collectable Minifigures was the first to include a Boxer. This figure wears the same red head guard and gloves as his predecessor but features new printing on the head, torso and legs. I love the two contrasting expressions for before and after the fight, one of which includes a blue gum shield while the other shows a black eye. The back of the torso is left without printing which is a bit disappointing but the belt and striped shorts look superb from the front as well as the sides.

The Hippie has grown older since making his last appearance in series seven so now features dark tan hair and a lime green headband. His facial hair is dark tan to match and he wears an unusual pair of orange-tinted spectacles which really help to distinguish him from other characters. The minifigure's taste in fashion evidently remains unchanged as he wears a flame yellowish orange shirt with a familiar swirling pattern as well as a denim jacket and jeans. Some leg printing would have been brilliant but the plain sand blue looks good too.

My least favourite of the four minifigures is the Sailor. He is based upon the character from the fourth series of Collectable Minifigures but the colours of his jacket and collar have been swapped, with dark blue now being dominant. The design certainly resembles real naval uniforms but looks relatively plain when compared with other figures and a telescope should have been included to be held up to the sailor's one open eye.

Cheerleader figures have appeared in three previous series of Collectable Minifigures. This one most closely resembles the zombie version from 2015 based on the colour of her outfit and her hairstyle, suggesting that it may actually depict the same character before she became a zombie! However, the torso is now decorated with the letter 'J' and the shade of green is much brighter than it was for the Zombie Cheerleader, as one might expect.

As usual, the Cheerleader comes with a pair of textured pom-poms. These accessories slot over her hands very neatly and include some green decoration on top which looks marvellous, matching the colourful clothing of the minifigure.

Overall

A selection of brand new characters would have been excellent but I think these revised versions of existing Collectable Minifigures are great too. They represent a perfect alternative if you missed the earlier series but are also sufficiently distinct from their predecessors that they can be displayed and played with alongside them.

The implied continuity between some of these minifigures and those released previously is particularly delightful and I am very pleased to have added them to my collection for that reason alone! £14.99 or $19.99 does feel like quite a lot of money given the prices of standard Collectable Minifigures but the exclusivity of the set justifies this to some extent in my view. Having said that, I think 5004939 The LEGO Batman Movie Minifigures remains the best of the four Bricktober packs.

By in United Kingdom,

I like them all, especially the boxer and cheer leader, the last cheerleader minifig was a zombie from the Halloween 2016 series, so this is a nice change..

By in United States,

I like how they all relate to previous CMF characters. $20 US does seem a bit high, but when these were first released you could get them free with a $50 purchase.

$20 seems a bit much and the only one I want is the sailor, the continuity from some figures is awesome as well.

Funny, the Sailor is my favorite of these guys. The Boxer is cool as well.

I think it's a tad sexist, lego only releasing female cheerleaders. I'd love to see a male one in the next CMF series, and I'd get him for sure.

I know everybody went ga-ga over the Batman ones, but I was really happy with these City Minifigs. It's the best of their Bricktober Minifigs that I have seen. $20 is still way too much to pay for 4 generic Minifigs, but getting them free with purchases over $50 seems reasonable. Very glad I got these.

By in United States,

I now want 26 cheerleaders to represent every letter of the alphabet!

Oh gosh, gotta love the hippie!
Looks like me except I cut my long hair off many years ago :-)
Still wear tie dyes under my work shirt though haha!

...and I'm getting a little grey as well...(well, just my hair)

Seems like a so-so lineup to me personally. I like the cheerleader and the navy figures best. I've held off on this one for my son...I want to see if he likes the figures before we buy it (if at all). Compared to the rest of this years' sets this seems lackluster for $20.

That hippie is really rad. Way better than his younger counterpart. It'd be cool to have some hippie-centric set, btw. Like a Volkswagen van (in system scale) or a shop.

I actually like the Sailor the most here. I do agree on a telescope or sextant.

I absolutely adore the sailor, but £15 seems extortionate anyway. Shame
