By in United Kingdom,

This is an experimental new feature that will normally appear at 2am each day.

Hopefully some interesting sets will be picked which prompt interesting discussion and reminiscing.

If it doesn't work I'll stop it.

One of my first Space sets as a kid - loved that stuff and wish I still had it - I believe my cousin's children are now playing with the stuff. But, at least it's getting played with :-)

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wow! This was my favourite set as a kid. Most of my Lego was town, but I treasured the handful of classic space sets I owned. This one was the first I'd ever seen with a blue Classic Spaceman, and because blue was easily my favourite colour it quickly became the set I enjoyed playing with the most. I never really managed to build many different things with it, but it still always brings a smile to my face to see it.

By in Poland,

Something's wrong with the helmet - it's not broken!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Look at that Classic Space goodness, I seem to remember that I was very excited to get this set as a child as it had some rocket parts I did not have before. Plus the neon red aerial made an excellent substitute lightsaber for the minifigs to battle with!

By in United Kingdom,

I think as long as it’s not the 75192 Falcon this should go quite well! It will be nice to see some of the sets that have not aged well too!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Does it mean that random set browsing is going away?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Me and my brothers used to build these gigantic (to us as kids at least) space stations/scenarios. This would have been but a small part of it. But it does have some cool features, like the rocket parts mentioned above...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I used to have this one too. My parents still have our old big box of Lego, though it's there to get played with by my nieces and nephews when they visit. I was thinking I should print out a load of the old instructions and some of these could be rebuilt!

I love how the old space vehicles had steering wheels! :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

For me, this is when "Classic Space" stopped being quite so classic. Too much blue used in the small "utility vehicles"... Blue and Black uniforms added to the astronauts... and the horrific (just my opinion) 6951 Robot Command Centre.

Gravatar
By in Indonesia,

I think this is a nice way to remind us of nice, almost forgotten, sets of yesteryear. Some will be interesting, some not, but that's ok.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a great idea! Is it literally any set, or is it filtered to remove weird Gear stuff?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yes there's a filter to remove Gear, Duplo, educational and other stuff. I will tweak it if unwanted sets still get through ;)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hey classic a set!
I have this set !!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I remember first getting this as a kid. So many new elements - including that trans aerial and the 1x1 round plates. And of course the new blue (and black) spacemen.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I loved this space theme as a kid and I still have 6872: Xenon X-Craft on my desk today.

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

I like this new feature. Looking forward to discussion about some sets long forgotten ;-).

Gravatar
By in France,

was it really random that the first set featured this way was a classic space one?
I mean, if it was a jack stone set or a town set from 98, there would be little doubt about the randomness.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great Idea. Todays set was already on my want list but can't wait to see some stuff I might not have been aware of. Wonder if featuring as the Brickset Random Set of the day pushes up demand for any of these sets?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is one of the few classic space sets I own. It's only practically twice my age. I got it from my Dad who had a box of classic space parts, with minifigures that looked like they had barely been used. This was one of the few sets that seemed to be almost all there.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Great Idea and One more Improve of an already fantastic Webiste and Database !!
Thank you

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I own quite a few Classic Space sets, but not this one - yet.

What I find fascinating is how substantial those old models looked with such a small number of parts. Nowaydays, 48 pieces would hardly get you a decent park bench. Then again, the instruction booklet for it would probably be 200 pages and weigh in at half a kilo ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Had this. Still got the parts.

The things I miss most about old instruction manuals and boxes, that aren't used in anymore?

All the pics of alternate builds. I got soooooooo much inspiration by looking at all the stuff you could make that wasn't the "official" kit.

I wish Lego still printed those. I can see why they don't for the licensed properties, but for their own stuff? No reason not to!

Gravatar
By in United States,

What a great idea! While it’ll no doubt bring forth some less than stellar old sets, you also get forgotten beauties like this one.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

My dark ages started that year so I don't own this set and I haven't bothered tracking it down; I'm sure I have the parts to build it anyways.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This was my very first Lego set I do remember. I was so excited about it, I played with it all day long and it was so great to have an Astronaut! Shortly after that I got 928 and a whole bunch of Classic Space Lego throughout the eighties. It was a blast.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@tttwlam: iirc, at least some of the first LEGO Star Wars sets had pictures of alternate builds on the boxes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great idea, good way to generate revenue for the site too. I love checking out the random sets on the sidebar.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw what time zone is at 2 AM?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was into my DA by the time this set was released. But it retains something of the look of the earlier Classic Space sets that I prized so highly. I had most of them from the range from the '70s and very early '80s and had a sizeable Classic Space layout using the lunar baseplates. Ah, nostalgia!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

SPACESHIP!!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is great! I had this set and a good number of the other Space sets around the early/mid '80s and I had a serious case of nostalgia overload whilst looking through this and related entries.

Really nice idea for a new feature.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

My fingers are itching to do a great classic Classic Space rebuild this year.... ;-) I also lost interest in lego space after this. Too many weird vehicles and colors, I moved on to Technic.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw
I love it! SPACESHIP!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I have this one. They have a real charm and openess of creativity that is lost with licenced sets from movie franchises.

I have seen no plans from lego to celebrate (what I think) is a big anniversary for classic space this year. They really should be bringing something out. Any ideas?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I think this idea of "random set" articles is a really good one. I look forward to seeing what pops up tomorrow, you know?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love the idea of a random set review/look-see, @Huw! Thank you for doing this. I had this set and still do, actually. The original Space series was very cool.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

My frist space set :)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The random set review allows everyone to see how Lego has really covered a lot of ground for decades, and a set may incite interest to someone. It's interesting and informative. Picking a set from the 80's Space series brings back memories of my favorite set as a kid - Set 6927 All-Terrain Vehicle. I played hours with that thing!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nice Feature - Always nice to see the old space sets as they were the only actual sets of Lego I had was younger.
It's one of the themes that I would be really interested to see what the designers could come up with using modern bricks and techniques without being beholden to a franchise.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

> I think this idea of "random set" articles is a really good one.

Thanks for this and similar comments! It's a quick and easy way to generate hopefully interesting content, and most importantly...

> I look forward to seeing what pops up tomorrow, you know?

... keep you all coming back to see what tomorrow's set is!

It'll be selected at 2AM GMT each day to give those in the USA a chance to see and comment on it before they go to bed :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

the last set i bought before my Dark Ages began--and one i rebuilt last year, when those Ages ended.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ah Classic Space, one of LEGO's biggest successes. I'm glad that they still do stuff themed around this line, such as Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

I’m pretty sure this is the first set I got with a trans red antenna, and I lost my mind.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

I really wish LEGO would do a new space theme based around space exploration rather than conflict/good guys, bad guys.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

This is a great idea and feature! Love seeing good old classic stuff from my childhood. -Can`’t get enough of them actually ;)

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Did I love this set... and did I hate the breaking trans round 1x1's

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This instantly took me back. It was a special offer on the back page of Bricks and Pieces magazine (UK) Autumn 1983. You could buy it before it came out in the shops. As I recall, mine arrived on a day when I was too unwell to go to school. Happy days.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great idea! Looking forward to seeing when one I own comes up!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I just rebuilt this set not to long ago. It was one of my favorites as a kid.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@london180275 you are correct. I also bought this through the bricks and pieces magazine. It cost 50p and I still have the set and the magazine with the coupon cut out. Love this set, my first blue spaceman if I remember correctly.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Excellent feature!

I remember trying to build this (and others like it) from my box of pieces, using the pictures in the Lego catalog or the Argos book for reference. It was probably not quite correct a lot of the time, though that didn’t seem to matter back then... :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I still have one, possibly 2 of these in my basement. This takes me back quite a few years.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I just built this set on the weekend. I'm on a mission to build every set my siblings and I have owned. I'm lucky in that our mum (or me, no DA here) would never let us get rid of any Lego.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love the feature.

I think this might well have been the last set before my dark ages, bought at Legoland (Billund of course, no others existing back then) on our second holiday to Denmark. An absolute favourite set with great parts.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What a great idea this is!
Nostalgic cries of “I had that!”

I’m also looking forward to seeing sets I missed during my ‘dark ages’ as there must be many sets that I still don’t even know exist. You don’t tend to look through the database for sets you’ve never seen.

It’s guaranteed to generate a few discussions and also get people delving further into the database.

I was grabbed by this one as I do remember this as one of my very first sets (at 5 years old).

I wonder if my little boy (who is 4) will remember that his first lego set was Hulkbuster?

Gravatar
By in France,

Please Lego bring back classic space!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love the idea of revisiting old sets everyday. Great idea!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've always silently loved the random set feature in the right column and it has surfaced quite a number of items for me that I either forgot about or never knew existed at all. Having a place to readily drop a little comment now is a great idea.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great idea Huw!

I loved this set as a kid! Built and swooshed all over my house.

Great basic set. One thing I never understood as a kid were all these open cockpit spacers. How did the astronauts breathe? Same thing with helicopters from this time period. Always bothered my nerdy brain.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I agree with the comments previously - I've often been drawn to the random set in the sidebar but this is a great change.
It appears, looking at the other sets from this year that I didn't get any of these Space sets - in fact, it seems 1983 was the year I got my first, and to this date only, Technic set.
