Random set of the day: Octan Racer
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 1890 Octan Racer, released in 1992. It's one of 24 Town sets produced that year. It contains 47 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 800 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Another thing I wish they still did, the value packs from several different themes.
^ They sort of still do with various product collections. Not really as popular as they used to be though
Wow that's a terrible model! I'm sure I'd have loved it as a kid though.
Looks really awful, but it's the first octan racer, so I need one!
Yeah, I gotta say, not a huge fan of this one. I think there were better Octan-themed racecars back in the day.
Looks like a little brother of 6648 Mag-Racer
The back of this looks very much ok, but the front is rather ugly and boring...
The Octan racer with the red spring axles that came later was much better. Those spring axles were the coolest.
Without sets like that, petrol stations like this would not exist. At 19:50 you can see a real life Octan petrol / gas station in Russia.

Here it is on Google street view, it looks a little different, so perhaps an earlier version.

@richselby that is bizarre! So did a Russian gas station copy LEGO, or was it the other way around, or perhaps pure coincidence? However it happened my mind is blown (doesn't take much lol) and thanks for the links. Btw the Google street view appears to be from 2012. As for the set, yup it's pretty fugly. 1992 was the beginning of my dark ages. My friends were making fun of me for having a LEGO town display (I didn't play with it, or so I told them) and so into boxes it went. Thankfully my wonderful mom kept them and they're being displayed, and played with, now by me and my kids.
What a monster! I owned (still do) 6648 Mag Racer and it was superior in every way to this ugly little thingy.
Was this US exclusive? I own 6648 and I've never seen this little ugly cousin of it!
Oooh, I do rather like that back spoiler piece - the rest of it's pretty naff though, yeah.
@yamaki It was part of a 4 set value pack only available in the U.S. ... 1891. I had this one and always wanted 6648. But the multi packs were still good to get a variety of themes for cheap.
@Richselby ... an actual Octan petrol station?
Damn it Lepin!
