By in Australia,

Ah, a good old fashioned space set. We haven't seen too many of these randomly pop up.

By in United States,

This is when Classic Space began to fly off the (mono)rails. What an awful looking set. I can't quite figure out if it's the color scheme, lazy construction or reliance on large pieces. I love classic space, but This is an abomination!!!

Cool space truck! Who doesn’t like a cool space truck?

This was one of my favorites. Still have it. Still love it!

Great set! An interesting addition to the Futron lineup. Looks great with the other sets and wonderful all terrain wheels.

By in United Kingdom,

I took this set apart just YESTERDAY!
As A. Khan says above, it is an awful-looking set: the wheel bogies are cool (I've kept them assembled for inspiration), but sit on ridiculous pillars; the enclosure for the small craft is made of pieces of castle which look quite out of place, rather than a good reüse of a part; the huge white plates that form the basis for the two halves are too big and so the corners protrude.
But THE WORST crime, that truly bugged me as a child, was the gaps around the cockpit; certainly, our Futuron explorer has a spacesuit on, but why have a cockpit if it's not 'sealed'? And it wouldn't even have been too hard to design without gaps.
Space, but not 'classic' Space.
Tirade aside, it's superb for play ;-)

By in Germany,

I have quite a few sets from that era, but this one must have escaped me. Couldn't even remember seeing this in the catalogue. Must look it up someday when I visit my parents (where all my old LEGO catalogues still reside). Anyway, as other have said, maybe one of the worse sets of Classic Space. I don't mind crazy looking vehicles per se, but this one just has too many flaws. Even most of my childhood MOCs from that time period looked superior imho. I fondly remember my self-made monorail, inspired by the real one which I unfortunately never got back then.

By in Germany,

I quite liked this set when I was a kid, but have not rebuilt it since the end of my dark ages.

Futuron's is still my favorite color scheme, although in retrospect it seems a little surprising that I ended up with Futuron sets at all given that by the time Lego was available behind the then-no-more iron curtain it should have been replaced by M-Tron as the "good" space faction already.

Back then the larger sets used to include small catalogues, which provided my first exposure to classic space pictures as well (probably via 6953, not this set). I always considered classic space inferior because of the helmet piece lacking a visor - it was only with Futuron helmets that the astronauts' oxygen tanks became useful! ;-)

Everyone calling this "Classic Space", it's not. This set belongs to the Futuron theme, the same theme that brought us the first monorail. Classic space had a much different color scheme, as well as solid colored minifigs with no visors on their helmets. Futuron took on the role of the science/explorer aspect of Classic Space, so it could be considered it's evolution I guess.

Anyway, I recently went through and filled in some of the gaps in my Space collection, and this set was one of them. I had to purchase it from a seller in Poland. For some reason it's hard to find in the U.S.

Ah Futron, the good 'ole days of Space. I always wondered why never got any Futron citizens popping up during the last Space Police line, considering they were supposed to be Futron's defenders.

Although this set is not technically "Classic Space", in my mind it kinda is. As the years push on, the space man has evolved. And I like to lump in Futuron, Blacktron, and Space Police with the classic lineup of space. To me, the big change came in 1993 when Ice Planet hit. The spaceman lost his more classic look. Spyrius, Unitron, Exploriens, Roboforce, and UFO continued (in my mind) the decline of the classic space man.

That being said, this particular set looks ... odd. But it plays REALLY well. The wheel setup, the cockpit, and the little launching ship all make it a great addition to a classic space play land.

Classic space always gets my upvote! ^ I disagree that Blacktron and SP are Classic, but I lump Futuron in there, too. I felt they were a natural evolution of Space, but Blacktron was definitely a new thing. Those black visors, the clear "bad-guy" vibe. Another major change for me was M:Tron with the introduction of fluorescent elements. I had a sweet 80's black light clock that I used to set those guys up in front of. Good times! I could see Ice Planet being a major change, too. You got those modified visors and I believe the first non-standard smiley faces.

@bananaworld I completely agree--even as a kid, non-sealed cockpits bugged me.

@ra226 For Space, the first non-standard smiley faces came with the Space Police 2 sets from the previous year.

I too had a thing for non-sealed cockpits. I really liked the octagonal cockpit design of Blacktron 2 for that very reason. That and they just looked really cool and were interchangeable.

By in United States,

This is actually pretty nice

@natro220
It's availible for $33 from the US at the moment

By in Denmark,

For some reason, I own 3 of these. And it's a way better set in person than it is in pictures. I like it quite a bit.

By in Denmark,

Also, yes, non-sealed cockpits have always bugged me. Even as a child.

By in United States,

@natro220 that explains it--SP2 is a theme that I have zero sets from. For some reason it just didn't appeal to me (I -loved- the BT2 sets and Ice Planet, though).

The SPII sets were hit or miss. The Solar Snooper and Galactic Mediator were some of the best sets of th e90s
