Review: 75932 Jurassic Park Velociraptor Chase
Posted by CapnRex101,
Many fans of LEGO and Jurassic Park expressed disappointment when the Jurassic World theme from 2015 did not include any sets based upon the 1993 film. 75932 Jurassic Park Velociraptor Chase should therefore prove to be extremely popular as it features several major characters and three significant locations from the movie.
These have been combined into a single model with remarkable efficiency but the designer has not compromised on the level of detail. I have therefore been looking forward to this set very much indeed, although the price of £44.99 in the UK seems rather expensive given that it costs just $39.99 in the US.
Minifigures
Alan Grant is an exceptionally popular character and this minifigure is instantly recognisable as the renowned palaeontologist. His medium blue shirt and red neckerchief look perfect in relation to the movie but are sufficiently generic that the torso could be re-used elsewhere. The unique head is also very impressive, featuring some wrinkles around the eyes and mouth as well as a small mark beneath Dr. Grant's right eye, all of which are accurate.
The minifigure comes with a tan fedora which is pleasing and the dark orange hair piece looks good too, especially when compared with Dr. Grant's disheveled appearance towards the end of Jurassic Park. Alan is armed with a pearl silver stud shooter which is presumably intended to represent the shotgun he uses in the film, even though this weapon fires trans-light blue 1x1 round plates!
Many of the best LEGO minifigures take inspiration from characters wearing distinctive attire and Ellie Sattler is an excellent example. A pink blouse is tied around her waist, just as in the movie, while the double-sided head features a wry smile on one side and a frightened expression on the other. These seem appropriate based upon Ellie's personality and the blonde hair piece was well chosen too, capturing her wavy hair style nicely.
Furthermore, the dual-moulded legs are printed with brilliant detail, consisting of dark tan shorts, white socks and reddish brown boots which all match the film. These designs continue onto the sides of the legs so the minifigure looks great from every angle. It should be acknowledged that Ellie is actually no longer wearing her blouse when the Velociraptors attack during the movie, although the version with a pink blouse is probably better known so I am glad the graphic designer made this decision.
Lex Murphy sports an unusual tank top which is decorated with colourful spirals. This element looks fantastic and may prove popular even among those with little interest in Jurassic Park, simply because it is unlike any other minifigure torso. Lex's hair piece has been in use since 2010 but is new in medium nougat so might also appeal to minifigure collectors.
Both Lex and Tim Murphy feature double-sided heads with smiles, worried expressions and freckles. The two pieces appear nearly identical at first glance which is a bit strange, although the characters are siblings so in that respect it makes sense. I like the striped shirt and bright light blue jacket worn by Tim as well as his medium nougat hair piece which is very rare, having only previously appeared in 10402 Fun Future.
A unique medium nougat and dark brown Velociraptor completes the set. Its colour scheme is much stronger than that of the raptors in Jurassic Park but I still think the dinosaur looks superb, featuring irregular streaks across its back as well as the standard sickle-shaped claws on each foot. LEGO Velociraptors are larger than those in the movie so I was unsure how effectively they would be able to interact with an interior space, like the kitchen. Fortunately, the open design of the model negates that issue.
The elements that make up the Velociraptor were introduced in 2012 and I am pleased that they remain in use as it would be difficult to improve upon them. I love the sunken eyes and nostrils on the head as well as the articulated jaw which looks magnificent whether it is open or closed. The neck, shoulders and hips are also poseable so you can create some spectacularly dynamic displays with ease.
Designing organic patterns for LEGO figures is often difficult but I like the dark brown design along the back of the Velociraptor very much. Not only does it blend nicely with the medium nougat base colour but some speckles are visible on either side, giving the impression of scaly skin like that seen in the films. Of the nine different adult Velociraptors that have been produced since 2012, this is my new favourite.
The Completed Model
Locations from film and television are often too large to be recreated with perfect accuracy in an official LEGO product, hence the essential features of those locations are sometimes condensed into a single affordable set. 75932 Jurassic Park Velociraptor Chase is a wonderful example, taking three important areas from the Jurassic Park Visitor Centre and combining them in a manner which should satisfy both adults and children.
The control room is the largest area of the model which makes sense as it occupies by far the most screen time in Jurassic Park. I like the dark red carpet on the risen area of the floor and the computer station looks excellent, with one monitor showing the Unix security system while the other features Dennis Nedry's famous GIF. I expect the graphic designer had a lot of fun when creating the latter sticker!
A secure door separates the control room from the embryo cold storage chamber and this includes a functional locking mechanism which works remarkably well. Pulling the red Technic lever beside the computer console will cause a dark bluish grey Technic axle to retract, thereby allowing the door to open. This is simple but it offers a great deal of play value, particularly since these kinds of functions rarely appear in LEGO sets.
The neighbouring wall includes a green light, presumably indicating that the door lock is in operation, as well as a map of Isla Nublar. It is clear that the designer has tried to squeeze as many details from the movie as possible into this set, even finding space for a telephone so Dr. Grant can contact John Hammond to inform him that the phones are working.
Unfortunately, sealing the door is rarely sufficient to discourage attacking dinosaurs during the Jurassic Park films so you can break through the window fairly easily. It is a perfect height for the Velociraptor to burst in, although actually climbing into the control room might be difficult. Nevertheless, this is a great feature and I like the Jurassic Park sticker on the window which could be useful for other creations.
Once the Velociraptor has broken through the glass, our four heroes escape into the air ducts above the control centre via a step ladder. That step ladder is accordingly included here but the air ducts are absent, as one might expect in a relatively small set. The minifigures can still clamber over the walls though so I am glad the ladder is included.
Jurassic Park is absolutely packed with iconic scenes, among the most famous of which takes place in the Visitor Centre kitchen where Lex and Tim hide from two Velociraptors. Once again, this area of the model features a number of notable details from the film, including some cutlery hanging from the end of a workbench and a plate which is piled high with trans-green jelly.
The cupboard space beneath the workbench is accessible from either side and is large enough to fit a minifigure with short legs inside. This is a lot of fun and I think the designer has included all the details one might need to recreate this scene, except for the door to the refrigerator. Fortunately, each section of the model is attached to the control room using Technic pins so you can disconnect and swap them quite easily.
The embryo cold storage area is visible from the control room through a window, just as in the movie. I love the angular steps leading from the door but their position seems odd as a minifigure accessing the embryos would need to walk all the way around to the other side of the model. The security camera is lovely though, again matching the source material.
Eight trans-orange globe elements represent the embryo capsules and these rotate on their stand so minifigures can access them all from the walkway. I like the white tusks which form the railing around the embryo storage tower and you can even find Nedry's modified Barbasol can which he used when attempting to steal the embryo samples. The designer of this set really has thought of absolutely everything!
Overall
75932 Jurassic Park Velociraptor Chase has immediately become one of my favourite dinosaur-based sets. Not only are the minifigures and the Velociraptor excellent but the Visitor Centre play set includes tremendous detail, making the best possible use of the space available by combining the three different areas. These are sensibly arranged for both play and display, although Technic pins allow you to swap them around if you wish.
The UK price of £44.99 is higher than I would like but $39.99 in the US seems reasonable and I would therefore definitely recommend this set, albeit only at a discount in Europe. Hopefully a future Jurassic Park set will include some more of the popular characters from the original film. John Hammond, Ian Malcolm, Dennis Nedry and Robert Muldoon would all be particularly appealing!

I really want this set, but £45 is just too much. I'll get it when it comes down to £35.
I can't help thinking I'd just remove the kitchen and build it into a bigger one. Other than that I absolutely love this, and it's very high priority on my list.
I would have bought this set if it was much larger and incorporated more of the visitor section/research facility; maybe the size of a flagship theme set ($150 CAD). It's still nice though.
I don't know... 76103 is £10 less and has 56 more pieces...
I still remember sitting through this scene with my hand before my eyes as a 10 year old. They have turned my childhood trauma into a lego set. Must get it for therapeutic reasons
I really would buy this set to keep sealed, this is one of those sets.
I went to Wally World looking for the Baby Velociraptor Playpen (which I still haven't found after several trips, urgh!) and ended up with this. Fun little build, great minifigures and dinosaur, and great trip down memory lane all equal no regrets :)
Great review, Cap'n!
Glad you did this review; I reckon Huw would have had a hard time sticking to the source material, which doesn't feature any of these characters being eaten ;-)
A good set but a ridiculous price
I will definitely need to buy this set at some point. Initially the $39.99 price point seemed a bit much for here in the U.S. to me, but when factoring in the specialized pieces for the velociraptor I suppose the price isn't too bad. This is especially true when compared to the pricing in Europe and the UK.
Thank you for the review, it was an enjoyable read and I enjoyed having the several references to the source material pointed out.
Good set. Good price. Good minifigures. Only one problem.
Where on earth is Wayne Knight!? I need him so that I can say "Hello, Newman!"
PLEASE!!! Make more classic Jurassic Park sets Lego. T-rex escape with one or even both auto cars, Dilophosaur attack with Dennis and the camo Jeep, so many possibilities.
I think the summary is This is a great set and full of movie details and It was a wanted for me in about 10 secs but it needs either a £10 reduction OR include another unique raptor. As said 20-30% off sale only for me.
When you talk about the globe elements used for the Embryo capsules you provide a link to this part: https://brickset.com/parts/design-29380
But I beleive it's actually this part: https://brickset.com/parts/design-58176
I've always called those things Barraki eyes or light bulbs, I didn't know their production name considered them a globe XD
Great set, but as has been the case so many times recently, far too expensive. Will get it once it becomes available at a discount though.
Oh and just one other gripe, apart from the fact that it only has ONE Raptor. The one in the set has a completely wrong colour (not just the printing, the base colour itself is totally off) when compared to the source material. It looks more like a dark greenish grey. Perhaps olive green with dark brown or dark bluish grey accents would have been a better choice.
@MataNui2009 - Right you are, thanks. I had never noticed that the opaque and translucent elements had different design numbers.
I love this set but think its worth about £30 at the most, hurry up lego i wanna see Alan Grants Explorer Denis Nedri's Red & Grey jeep and the chopper they all leave the island in at the end of JP 1 with john Hammond,
Oh and a set with Ian Malcom and Robert Muldoon would be great too..
How can this set not include a minifigure of Dennis Nedry?
@CapnRex101 Good analysis and article as always. To circumvent the costly Jurassic park sets you could always opt for the Adventurers Dino Island theme instead ;)
I seem to recall that at one point in time Johnny Thunder was known as Sam Grant, synchronicities abound!
I am definitely going to get this set. I really like the new JP minifigures. One question though: Are the non-minfig elements printed or is it stickers? Stickers are mentioned in the article, but I just want to make sure. Thanks.
The build is such a disappointing hodgepodge. I really wish they'd focused on one thing/scene instead of trying to squeeze as much into one, incoherent set.
Alas, it is Jurassic Park and the minifigures are very desirable, so no doubt I'll eventually buy this overpriced set anyway, even though I don't think it's worthy of much praise.
I actually agree with Graysmith. I feel like they tried to include too much in the one set, and it just ended up a bit disjointed. Having said that ... it's one of the iconic moments from the original Jurassic Park movie. I wish the set was cheaper, but meh, I'll probably still buy it. That's Ellie and Alan, for crying out loud.
But seriously, I couldn't eat green jello for months after watching the movie. I was eleven.
Assembled mine a couple of days ago with my daughter. She’s too young to see the movie but She loves the raptor and minifigs. This set is great! Obviously a full size Visitor Center would’ve been amazing but this set captures so many elements it makes it well worth it in my opinion.
I absolutely love this set, and hope that Lego is open to creating more classic Jurassic Park sets in the future. One set simply isn’t enough!
Personally I never saw Jurassic Park as a movie they could make toys out of, apart from the dinosaurs. As a child I bought JP action figures only for the cute mini dinosaurs that came with them. The latter lasted longer in my toy collection.
I hope this set doesn't give children the impression that this movie is watchable, because it's pretty disturbing imo (unlike Jurassic World which is merely a popcorn flick). I remember seeing JP in cinema when I was only five and I don't remember being traumatized by it, but that's just me. Probably because I was already in love with dinosaurs before the movie came out.
@Nikolaevna: don't know which cinema let you into JP at age five, but over here such a venue would be in deep trouble for breaking the age rules. This film has a PG12 rating, and rightly so.
I saw this film at the Bromborough Odeon back in 1993 when I was 16 years old. Actually it was the very first film I ever saw in the UK. Fond memories :-)
@AustinPowers - JP is rated PG in Singapore which is an advisory rating, and I was with my family that day. They only enforce age restrictions for movies that are rated NC16, M18 or R21.
I hope we will see sets with those red-grey and red-yellow-lime jeeps.
One with Ian, Gennaro, electric fence, T-Rex, a wooden toilet, the other with Dennis and the Dilophosaurus.
No. 1 priority for me. I hope they do the T-Rex scene with the car(s). It would be a good opportunity to include Ian Malcolm and the Jurassic Park gate. It could also have the lawyer guy as well to get eaten by the T-Rex
That would be his right eye, Capn ;)
@deikoon- because Nedry was dead long before these scenes occurred...
I love this set! I bought it but have yet to build it since I'm waiting to get all the new Jurassic World sets. I've never really bought multiples of the same set before (except for Outrider Dropship Attack), but I'll definitely be picking up at least one more copy of this set.
Let's file the omission of Nedry under "budget constraints". ;-)
I will be picking this up if I can ever find it on discount (all the shops here in Australia that have any kind of decent sales are all saying "excludes Jurassic" in their sales info :(
I tend to nitpick a lot, but you have to admit Ellie looks like she's using a Snapchat filter or something. Her mouth is absolutely gigantic, and it looks awful.
In case anyone's interested, I photoshopped her mouth to a size I think is more appropriate. The difference really shows, in my opinion.

Very keen on this set but at AU$79.99 it's pretty expensive. My concern is if I wait for a drop in price will they disappear for all time from the shelves like the last JW wave. Anyone know if they're only doing one release again? Was hoping for a triceretops, maybe next time?
I need this set for Nedry’s Macintosh Quadra 700 if for nothing else! Now that’s a classic.
