Cool--I had (still have) 7040, grand-daddy to this set. I remember the funny whistle sound the two-way valve brick made.

Me too. It was one of the first to use studless beams, at the front of the cab and arm.

Ooo, some 'ole Technic!
I always thought old Technic sets looked a little messy with all the loose studs along one end of each beam. While the overall functions were fantastic, it just had a sense of being cluttered that put me off. On the flip side, modern Technic has too *few* studs! We'll never strike a balance will we?

Finally got this one last year. There are some very clever, and possibly unique building techniques in this set, and it really packs a lot in for a set of it's size. It's fun to operate and each function works perfectly. The switches either side of the cab are done so well, the air pump is well supported, the rocking suspension is a really nice touch, and I don't thing I've seen this multi point steering system anywhere else. The only thing that would have made it better would be a Lego log to pick up!
