Review: SW911841 Poe Dameron's X-wing

The latest issue of the monthly LEGO Star Wars magazine is now available in the UK and comes with a splendid rendition of Poe Dameron's T-70 X-wing Starfighter, containing 48 pieces.

A corresponding miniature model, 30278 Poe's X-wing Fighter, was released in 2016 but I think the new design looks far more impressive than its 64-piece predecessor.

The Completed Model

Poe Dameron's unique X-wing Starfighter, named Black One, features an attractive black and orange colour scheme. This model includes few orange elements but looks marvellous on the whole, making clever use of a white 1x1 round plate that represents BB-8 behind the cockpit. Moreover, the S-foils can be deployed or stowed together. The wings appear too thick in the latter configuration but I appreciate the inclusion of this vital function.

Four trans-pink 1x1 round plates form the glowing engines at the rear of the craft. These look good in relation to the source material but should be positioned further apart. Unfortunately, I believe it would be difficult to improve upon the existing design without compromising in other areas at this tiny scale. The semicircular intakes in front of the wings are not perfect either, although they are far better than those in 30278 Poe's X-wing Fighter which were round and more closely resembled a T-65 X-wing.

Overall

My favourite LEGO Star Wars magazine gifts are often the miniature vehicles and SW911841 Poe Dameron's X-wing is no exception. Some details have been excluded or simplified due to the model's small scale but the important features are all present. Furthermore, the vehicle feels sturdy so is ideal for play. I would certainly recommend adding this X-wing to your collection, should the opportunity arise.

By in Portugal,

Good design for a polybag.

Nice set. Maybe a comparison or at least another picture of the previous model would be nice, but otherwise great review, Captn!

30278 blows this out of the water. I like the idea of the scale, but you lose too much detail here.

I am a fan of mini vehicles though.

@Your future president - I don't have 30278 to hand, unfortunately, or I would have included a comparison photo.

"Poe Dameron's unique X-wing Starfighter, named Black One, features an attractive black and orange colour scheme."

Anyone remember three years ago how everyone was complaining about the 'Halloween X-Wing' in the Force Awakens? Its amazing how this paint scheme has grown on the community in the time since the film released.

I would like to see a rendition of the T-70 that gets the closed position of the s-foils right. Every iteration so far has stacked them on top of each other like the T-65, whereas they should occupy the same plane.

^^ it still looks like a Halloween X-Wing... but it also looks good.

^ agreed. it takes some doing, but it's possible to modify 75102 such that the wings close properly. And it looks really good that way!

I think 30278 actually looks better than this one. And like its larger cousin, it's also easy to improve using only the pieces available in the set.

Sorry, but I personally don't get why you'd want to insistently collect polybags. What's the big deal?

@1947andallthat They’re cheap and therefore it is easy to amass a large collection of them. They also often include new parts or minifigures for a low price.

I like 30278 better as well, but its all personal taste.

I do love polybags though. One benefit Mr. Thrawn forgot to mention is they take up much less storage space, which is important when storage is at a premium. I especially like some of the new minifigs released in the polybags as mentioned by Mr. Thrawn.

This is a better version with its stubby (and missing an orange stripe) nose and screwy engine design than the polybagged mini build? Whatever.

The proportions of this model are more accurate than 30278 Poe's X-wing Fighter, hence my appreciation for the updated design. The shortened nose is particularly important and looks much better here than it does on the version from 2016 in my opinion. Moreover, the earlier craft features cylindrical engines so more closely resembles a black and orange T-65 X-wing rather than Poe's T-70.
