By in Venezuela,

Where was my mind at when these sets were out? Seriously, this looks like a very cool, engaging set, and certainly one I could find uses for now.

^ you were probably ensconced in Star Wars with the rest of us ;)

I was always curious what happened to the kind little Martian smurfs of Life on Mars to turn them into the monsters they became in Mars Mission only a few years later...

Aka “the ship with just all the lasers”

What did ETX stand for in all these sets?

Great theme. 7649 is one of Lego’s greatest sets.

I had almost all the first wave of Mars Mission as a kid. This was definitely the coolest alien ship of the first year. The mothership had size and detachable pods but nothing beats the dense plating opening up to a rack of lasers found on this one. The human miner is pretty solid as well.

First Lego set I fully remember getting and one that means a lot to me. To this day I recall building the drill on the miner and the click-hinges for the wings. I'd like to rebuild this eventually.

Looking at the various classifiers in those sets, I think MB is Martian Base (because it’s the one and only base), MT is Martian Terrestrial (they’re all ground vehicles), MX is going to be something like Martian Exo-Planetary (because they’re all flying spaceships) with ETX as Extra-Terrestrial Exo-Planetary

I love the mars mission theme! Too bad it was before my time.

By in Netherlands,

This is such a great theme. I didn't get any of it though, because I was a 10 year old kid and all of my budget went to Star Wars and Bionicle.

My brother got this. Ended up broken apart in the Lego box but used lots of the awesome parts on countless MOCs when we were kids.

Mars Mission was such a cool theme. I remember putting several of the sets on my Christmas list but never getting them. Love the white/orange colour scheme and the stickers. Would have been good for a "The Martian" MOC maybe?

@ra226 - I feel like I remember reading somewhere that the Mars Mission aliens weren't actually native to Mars, but from another planet that had invaded Mars and driven the Life on Mars Martians into hiding. I don't know if that was ever official canon, or if it was just a fan-theory, but it made sense to me.

This was the only set I ever have gotten that was missing a sticker. (and yes, I got it back in 2007 from LEGO, not used)

This was such a strange line. I sometimes wonder if they had two different designers working on the human and alien vehicles. The human vehicles were fantastic, but every alien ship felt like a cobbled together afterthought with disparate parts, even in the sets where the alien vehicle was the bulk of the set.
