Review: 40292 Christmas Gift Box
Posted by MeganL,
Black/Brick Friday is fast approaching, which means LEGO is offering a holiday promotion! This year it's 40292 Christmas Gift Box. I've been eager to look at this set since I saw the images. How will this set fit into your holiday collection?
The front of the box shows the set, along with an inset on the lower right illustrating that the set hinges open to show a Christmas scene inside. There's a red ribbon graphic on the top right indicating this is a limited edition, and and gift tag on the bottom left with some lines suggesting To: and From:. The back of the box shows the set when it's open. Inside the box, there are four unnumbered bags, two 6x12 plates and an instruction booklet.
There are two minifigs included in the set. The first is a man, who is dressed for a cozy Christmas morning with a flannel shirt and blue pants. The other minifig is a child, in this case a little girl with a ponytail and freckled face. She has a twist on the classic space logo on her t-shirt, which I quite like.
There's an extra hairpiece included with the set that the instructions show should be an alternate hairstyle for man. However, since the child's head is double sided, I've chosen to show the extra hairpiece with the other expression. The end result is a child who looks like they may have just broken their Christmas present, in this case a toy train.
The scene inside the box is a lovely vignette of Christmas morning. One side shows a hearth with a toasty fire, a stocking hung on the chimney and some small tree decorations on the mantle. On either side of the hearth, blue and white curtains are dressing the windows. A broom is ready to sweep up ashes. There's also a table with a mug, with perhaps with some hot chocolate for Santa's visit.
The other half of the scene features a good sized Christmas tree complete with ornaments, and a few presents underneath the tree. There's an area rug in turquoise and light blue. A comfortable looking armchair and wall clock complete this portion of the scene.
Closing the box shows the completed scene.
Here's another look at the opened box.
The lid is built last and comes with a very fancy bow with leaf detailing. I really like the parts used to build the details of the bow.
Overall thoughts
I think this is a lovely promotion! The finished build looks just like a present ready to be opened on Christmas morning. The vignette inside is charming, and the designer has done a really nice job of packing a lot of detail in a small space. This is a build that looks just as attractive open or closed. If you're doing some Christmas shopping over the next couple weekends, this is definitely worth building into your purchasing plans.
From November 23-26, 40292 Christmas Gift Box is available with a purchase of $99/£85. If you're a VIP member, you have early access to this set this weekend (November 17-18) along with a double points promotion.
Many thanks to the LEGO Group for providing Brickset with a copy of the set. All opinions expressed in this review are mine.

Such lovely colors!
Must resist urge to buy UCS Falcon so I can get this for free. MUST RESIST!
Double VIP points as well you say, and Quidco... I don’t think I’m going to be able to resist it this weekend.
Don’t forget the 5 quid PayPal promo too!
Wow the interior of this set is great!
Megan, I love your reviews for the writing and photo quality. However I do miss some information about rare pieces or new colours for. Would that be something you would be willing to add in the future?
Lovely festive set, just like the carousel and the snow globe lego did last year, however
I, ve spent enough on lego this week lol..
^ yeah I'm tapped out myself, too. I'm homing there'll be some kind of nice deal on the Snowspeeder for black friday, but those deals aren't what they used to be. I'm already going to have to postpone the WV Firestation to next year.
What’s the five quid PayPal promo? Is it if you pay with PayPal at checkout on Lego.com u get a fiver off? Do I need a code?
Awesome set! The vignette is great, and has a lot of awesome pieces! Sadly, I will not be able to get it.
I’ve just found the offer. Do a search in google, click the link, log into PayPal and it saves the offer. Gives u back a fiver when you pay with PayPal at Lego.com. Thanks @BrickCompanion! I’m stepping in at 12.01 tonight!
excellent! off to fill my shopping bag so tomorrow i can just click & get this ^_^. then when we get our tree, i'll build it and put it below--the first present.
With the Daigon Alley promo running through 11/30, does that mean if I get Ninjago City (for example...) that I'll get both Daigon and the Christmas Box?
^ Check your basket before paying, Diagon Alley is not being added in some places, presumably because it's out of stock.
I was going to get this box anyway. I didn't know it had an interior, so now I feel much better about it. Maybe I'll get two.
I'm going for the rollercoaster. Double points, here i come. Tomorrow, that is.....
Very cool. 3 "surprise inside sets" recently (including Newt's Case and the Pop-Up Book); love that idea!. Just have to figure out the big bucks purchase..
I was going for the rollercoaster and then noticed all the retiring soon sets! I still need big ben and tower bridge. decisions decisions.
And it's available in continental Europe (at least in the Netherlands). Mine's ordered! (or rather: added for free to the order I just put in)
I'm saving funds so I can buy the Winter Village Fire Station in December. I hope this is still available then, because it really is quite gorgeous.
The offer is live for this set and the double points.
I bought the UCS Falcon and must say a big thank you to BrickCompanion for the reminder about the PayPal £5 off deal.
Have you ever thought about doing an end-of-year GWP roundup article? Like a freebie year in review? Which ones were most worthwhile, which were worst, best minifig, coolest build, etc? I feel like some years have generally pretty good gifts, and others not so much. It would be cool to hear your guys' thoughts in a retrospective format.
Just an idea.
I love this new trend of really high quality, decently sized promo sets. Its not a must-have for me like 40291: Creative Personalities was, but its still a damn good free gift
Just ordered online in North America and this promo stacks with Diagon Alley!!!!
The promotion is live NOW!
Made a purchase to get my hands on this giftbox.
Just ordered Voiltron via the website (US)...got Diagnon Alley and the Gift Box.
Saw this in store today. It’s very small. Very. Not a pick for us.
Sbpyrat, I made the exact same order. Plus I used the $80 that I earned from getting double points on the Ultimate Millennium Falcon and got three sets for a very good price. I’m just hoping they show up on a day off from work.
I love these little promotional sets, but I receive more than give LEGO at the holidays so I'm never able to get them.
@MorkMan: it is what it is. I myself wouldn't call a 12x12 footprint small, especially on a set that is able to fold out and packed to the brim with details. But that's just me ;-)
My mum isn’t very good on the internet so I get to order my own present for Christmas which I decided to wait until the free sets were released. This gift box plus double points is what I’ve been waiting for. I’m trying to build up my Christmas Lego collection and this will add nicely. Think the Christmas sets recently have been high quality, loved the snow globe and the nut cracker and this for a small set looks prefect.
It's a great set..! I love the fact that there is a little cosy living roomwith the tree and fireplace. The only down side really is the outside.. I would like to see more colours..
Waiting for mine to arrive... :)
A very cute little set... my girlfriend was actually keen to build it and she's not usually interested in my Lego... and it's even nicer that you get it as a bonus when buying another set you wanted anyway. :)
@TurtLes_BrickBuilds, i really like the outside colours.
