Review: 60240 Kayak Adventure

Several smaller City sets are usually released in January but they often receive little attention, as one might expect given the appeal of brand new themes and a Modular Building. However, I have enjoyed many of these small City sets in the past so have been looking forward to the 2019 range.

60240 Kayak Adventure stands out in particular as this set contains a unique yellow kayak along with an orange life jacket accessory which has only appeared once before in 60202 People Pack - Outdoor Adventures. The truck also seems reasonably realistic so I am approaching this review with high expectations.

Minifigure

A single minifigure is included, wearing a light bluish grey hooded jacket and a dark red shirt. The torso was originally created for Zach Mitchell in 75919 Indominus Rex Breakout but has since appeared with yellow hands in numerous City and Creator Expert sets. I think it works for a kayaker and looks superb in combination with dark tan trousers.

Chase McCain's head is immediately recognisable, featuring a smile, bushy eyebrows and prominent cheekbones. This component has been used for minifigures other than Chase but he certainly seems like a character who might enjoy kayaking when not pursuing criminals!

60240 Kayak Adventure

The minifigure also comes with an orange life jacket. This accessory was introduced in 60202 People Pack - Outdoor Adventures and appears in several new City sets, although this is the smallest. It looks more realistic than past designs and does not create an unsightly gap between a minifigure's torso and its head, unlike the preceding element.

The Completed Model

Off-road trucks are a common subject for LEGO City sets and this example is quite impressive in my opinion, featuring large balloon tyres and an attractive colour scheme. The vehicle measures 11cm in length and is primarily four studs wide which feels realistic when compared with other City cars. There is no roof rack for the kayak but I think it looks good without a rack, especially given the sharp contrast between yellow and black.

A new bullbar element was introduced at the beginning of 2018 and appears again here, protecting the radiator. I like the tyres and there is considerable ground clearance beneath the truck which is great for play. In addition, this model includes four light bluish grey mudguards which are brand new in this colour and may prove useful for other creations.

There is space to seat a minifigure inside the cab and this can be accessed with ease by removing the roof. The trans-black brick that forms the rear windscreen looks marvellous and a flatbed area provides more storage space, perhaps for the frog which is included! Six stickers are applied to the truck. These look splendid but I think the model would appear similarly impressive without them.

LEGO released a new kayak with a matching paddle during 2017. This piece has already appeared in red, purple and black but this yellow version is exclusive and it looks brilliant. You can store the paddle on a clip and a camera is mounted towards the front of the kayak, like those found in 41315 Heartlake Surf Shop and 60160 Jungle Mobile Lab.

Overall

60240 Kayak Adventure is an excellent set. The off-road truck looks marvellous and I am pleased to see another colour for the kayak, particularly in a set which only costs £9.99 or $9.99 so offers good value. I am similarly delighted to see the updated life jacket component in a smaller set as this piece represents a vast improvement over its predecessor.

On that basis, I would recommend adding 60240 Kayak Adventure to your City collection, especially if you have not purchased a set containing a kayak previously. Those looking for greater innovation may wish to focus their attention upon larger City sets this year.

I hope you have found this review informative. Let us know by liking this article and share your thoughts on the set in the comments below.

does look like a nice little set - I like all the components, and great value for the price as well.

By in United States,

I don't collect much city, but this set seems like a great price so I am tempted.

By in United Kingdom,

I picked this one up because I really liked the look of it. A nice price too!

By in Bulgaria,

I don't normally go for these types of sets but will definitely pick this up when I am short a few bucks to a promo threshold or find a good sale.

My dad has a yellow Kayak! He goes out in it all the time! I might get this set for him...

By in United States,

I remember kayaking a few summers ago - great experience.

Seeing as I already have the bat-kayak, I might have to pass this one in favor of other great sets. Maybe I can get another Benny’s space squad instead...

I hope that camera is water proof...

By in Netherlands,

I picked this set while buying a couple of others and even I saw it I just had to have it. And I like it a lot. It's a nice addition to me collection.

I'd get a few for a big display, but modify most into those ghastly 'lifestyle car' crossovers that have NO OFF-ROAD ABILITY that are so popular these days.

The truck (SUV?) looks awesome! I want this set! :D

That truck looks terrible. It looks like one of those trucks that they tried to make look more like a sports car and less like a "you can actually haul stuff with this". The hood is longer than the bed, the driver is sitting aft of center, and the extreme flare on the fenders of what is essentially a 4-wide truck make this look like it was inspired by the Chevy SSR. That wasn't exactly a popular design.

@legoavenger14:
Not for a Type II PFD. Granted, they don't see much use in kayaking because they're bulky up front where you need more arm mobility, but there are backless wearable life preservers. The original minifig design looks like a Type II, and the minidoll design is clearly based on the Type II. The second minifig design could go either Type II or Type III. This one, admittedly, is the first to feature a zipper tab, which I've never seen on a Type II (though it could probably be done). So, yeah, probably needs a back. The old Yellow Castle tabard had a huge problem in that it was easily damaged and relied on stickers to give it any detail. The Super Secret Police vest from TLM did have a back, though, so it's not like they're completely resistant to the idea.

Errrrm........I would just like the life jacket done in yellow please

(cos orange ones put on my small army of coastguard figs makes them look like tubby little orange men!)

Nice little model tho. Thanks for the review

This is a really nice looking set. I have to say, I am a little nostalgic for the old life jacket piece (97895), but this will do as well. I like the fenders on the truck, as they really make this set stand out from others of it's kind. Great set overall!

By in Germany,

Great set. And knowing that these 9.99 Euro City sets often get discounted to 6.99, this will be a purchase impossible to forgo.

By in Portugal,

On my whish list since I saw it for the 1st time. Love the kayak, will look great on my city water scene. The truck is also very nice, love the ballon tyres! 9,99€ is a rare price nowadays! Thank you for the great review!!

This set caught my eye when I was skimming through the list of new sets at Lego.com--such a strong review has definitely put it on my want list! I may not like the new SUV/pickup truck crossovers in real life but this is an excellent Lego version and at least putting the kayak on top shows that its off-road ability is likely a necessity for its owner, rather than a silly indulgence.

I really like this set. It's nice and small and fits City perfectly.

However, LEGO, just bring back the 80s and 90s life jacket because everything since has been trash.

I think the set is beautiful. It's one of those, absolute must-have City sets for 2019.

@capnrex101

Will you be reviewing the 2019 Star Wars sets anytime soon

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Nice to see a 10 euro car in the line again. The kayak is a nice touch and overall the set in it's simplicity is a nice playset.

However: sad to see that doors become rarer and rarer these days...

By in United Kingdom,

@kel - Yes, I am heading out to purchase some this morning.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Completely missed this in the previews for '19. What a nice set to get a kayak.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As I was reading the review I expctes this set to be $20, so a nice surprise to learn that it is only $10!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hobbit Fan, it would only be a $20 set if they made it white, orange and blue and called it a Coast Guard set. ;)

By in United States,

That’s a fabulous little set for the price. I can easily see buying a few of these and modifying the trucks a bit. Thanks for a terrific review!

By in Australia,

Thanks for the review and nice pic of the set in the non-Lego great outdoors.

By in United Kingdom,

Great review. Nice to see these little city sets getting some love. They are often one of the first things I look for when the new ranges are introduced.
