Random set of the day: Zonic Strike
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 8357 Zonic Strike, released in 2003. It's one of 20 Racers sets produced that year. It contains 107 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$15/£9.99.
It's owned by 472 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Mine had a loose piece that would go CLIKETy clack when ever I rolled it across the floor. ;-)
^Oh No! Pun Police, arrest this person for mentioning Clickits! lol jk
Comparing these early Racers sets to Speed Champions, I can say the latter is better; even as a big Tiny Turbos fan.
I got this set in a lot. I like the wheels and driver.
These are probably closer related to today’s pull-back sets than Speed Champuons.
Even though I don't own this set, I have this minifig, and a heap of the pullback motors.
Honestly, the larger Drome Racers sets (that have good combinations of Technic and System parts) are one of the few subthemes that have aged very well. They wouldn't look dated or out of place next to either the modern Technic pull-back sets, or Speed Champions, despite the latter being exclusively System brick builds. I'm not sure how much of this can be attributed to the decals more than the parts themselves.
Most of the Drome Racers I owned were the smaller ones, though. Those were fun to play with. I did own two of the Technic-based slammer bikes from 2005, 8645-1 and 8646-1.
Can Lego Indicate Clearly Kinds In Technic / System, please?
Still waiting on an official Rocket Racer minifigure, although his advertising space in Ninjago City warmed my heart.
is it just me or is this car massive in scale compared to its minifig driver?
I think the parts can be used to build a very goodlooking spaceship. We just need cockpit canopy.
Finally something I have! It's in pieces in my part collection. Got it back in the day. The printed wedges and slopes are cool, but I don't like the wheels.
I knew like Lego had an awkward stage in the early 2000s, but I didn't know they started replacing perfectly good "s"s with "z"s.
Bad design.
I liked the variety of pullback engines available in the Racers line.
You're getting it wrong, guys. It's not for striking in a sound-barrier shattering fashion. It's for striking zones! Therefore Zone-ic Strike!
As to what zone they're striking specifically... I don't know.

It's not in your collection.
