Review: 5005251 Penguin Winter Hut
Posted by CapnRex101,
5005251 Penguin Winter Hut became available towards the end of 2018 and we are celebrating World Penguin Day by publishing a review! This fun minifigure is based upon the Penguin Boy from Series 16 of the Collectable Minifigures so should prove quite impressive, especially given the inclusion of some printed skis.
Take a closer look after the break...
Minifigure
The new Penguin Suit Girl shares numerous aspects of its design with the Penguin Boy, featuring the same headgear which looks great. I love the orange beak and the beady eyes along with the feathered texture on top. Furthermore, the white area of this mask lines up neatly with the printed torso, although that is partially covered by a scarf that continues onto the back of the minifigure.
A pattern consisting of fish and snowflakes decorates this scarf which seems suitable for the character. Her flippers are look fantastic while the feet are decorated with orange highlights, again corresponding with the Penguin Boy. However, this head is exclusive and includes some freckles alongside a smiling expression. The design is comparatively simple but new printed designs are always welcome.
This minifigure wears a pair of magenta skis which have appeared on two earlier occasions, although they now include an excellent snowflake design. LEGO has not printed this component before so I am surprised and pleased that they decided to do so here. As usual, the skis are designed so they can be placed together and held in a minifigure's hand but the Penguin Girl has no hands to grip them!
Overall
LEGO has produced several promotional minifigures which incorporate elements introduced within the Collectable Minifigures theme and 5005251 Penguin Winter Hut is among my favourites. It does seem similar to the Penguin Boy, although it would be difficult to adjust the design too much without moving away from the fundamental features of a penguin. The magenta skis are a welcome addition as well.

So where's her hut?
^ the box she comes in.
I somehow missed that this was even a thing. Cute figure.
Very cute minifig, Just like the gingerbread man and the chicken suit girl..
Must admit, have never heard of this before.
When was this available? Compared to other GWP sets, it doesn't look like many people own it. Will it be made available again, like the Easter hut last week via Facebook code?
@Weepy Donuts:
I don't know exactly when it was released, but I'm pretty sure sometime toward the end of December, although I could be a bit off. I know just2good reviewed it in February, and said it was released at LEGOLAND - he said he thought it was LEGOLAND exclusive, so that's probably why it's rare. That would be really awesome if they made it available again, although if it were to happen, I don't personally see that happening until later this year. I guess we'll see what happens!
I had heard that it was going to be a GWP in December, but when December rolled around nothing happened with it, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like a LEGOLAND exclusive.
I have penguin boy so would really like her to accompany him. *good review
I thought this was going to be a December promo item as well, but it never showed up (I'm in the US). Glad to see LEGO addressing their distribution issues, as this seems to be one that fell through the cracks in some areas.
As far as I know, it never showed up in Canada either. Too bad, I was looking forward to getting it. I hope they make it wider available in the future, really not liking promos offered only in certain markets or locations.
It was primarily an Asia release, I got one in S Korea
Are Brickset getting the genders of seasonal child bird minifigs wrong on purpose? First saying the chick was a girl and now the penguin is a boy...
@Norikins - This penguin is evidently female while the original Collectable Minifigure was male, as stated in the review. I am not sure where the confusion lies.
Dang it. Thank to you guys, I had to BrickLink one :)
Cripes!! How did I miss this one??
Ironic to mention the skis can be held together in a minifigure's hand, yet the minifigure here has no hands to hold them!
Waited and waited for this one to become available like others mentioned... still wanting and waiting.
@Countess Brickula:
You chose to continue living in the US like all the rest of us who never got one of these? Somehow we got skipped on this one.

Yeah, that was the first thing that popped in my head when I read that line. No ski poles, either, for the same reason. Maybe you could jab the handles up inside the hollow cavities on the underside of the flippers or something...
Never offered in California. Maybe next year? I’ve seen offers we’ve had announced as new in other countries the next year.
