Random set of the day: Surveillance Squad
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6348 Surveillance Squad, released in 1994. It's one of 29 Town sets produced that year. It contains 311 pieces and 3 minifigs, and its retail price was US$33.
It's owned by 2832 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

While LEGO has done a ton of these things over the years, I think this is probably the most realistic mobile command post they have done. And it's with a lot fewer pieces and only 4-wide!
I admit to being biased, but the police line that came out, around 93 and 94, were some of my favourite Town sets, ever. I own most of them, and I'm very glad for that. I really feel like, they were some very iconic Police-themed sets, and everything since then has been variations of the originals.
This set is completely gorgeous, and there's nothing about it that isn't beautiful.
This along with the police station from this theme was easily some of the best Lego Police ever.
Truly these years were the heyday for Town/City. Even seeing that old system logo gives me the warm and fuzzies.
Great Bikes! Iconic.
I always admired this set as a kid, but I focused more on getting a full-blown police station instead of the accessory vehicles. However, two years ago, in a search for the 6571 Flame Fighters on eBay, I found a bundle of MISB RESQ911 sets being sold that included the fire station, Hook & Ladder, Central Precinct HQ, and this set. I managed to haggle down the price a bit to under $500 for all four of them, and boy was that worth it! The sealed sets were in such immaculate shape, I thought they time traveled from 1994 to 2017! With this package, I got a newfound appreciation for Surveillance Squad, and I am excited to add this to my police force in Legopolis!
On one negative note, my Central Precinct HQ, though sealed, suffered a rare packaging oversight and is missing its sticker sheet. Guess I'll have to hit up Bricklink for that one.
Town back in the 90s had an overabundance of fire and police sets. But these were heavily tempered by the presence of leisure locations (Sandy Point Marina), restaurants (Pizza To Go), garages (Hot Rod Club), and even vacation homes (Rocky Retreat). So don't come at me saying that bemoaning the excesses of fire and police themes today is ridiculous because that has always been par for the course. The Golden Age of the System still outshines the hodge-podge of daredevil occupations and outlandish emergencies that riddle the so-called "City". Give us the small-Town life again, and all will be well in Legoland!
^ Amen.
Got interested in it years after it got discontinued, and i'm now trying to build it from PAB parts. Yeah, granted, some parts are no longer being made, though there are equivalents available.
90's man, truly the golden years...
This is actually very similar to the 2017 CITY Police truck!
Not exactly subtle with all that gear on the roof, is it? I think the criminals are going to know you’re surveilling them XD
the police logos they use here is easily my favorite.
The badge somehow always looked a bit futuristic with those bars above and below the star.
Meanwhile the red line under the word police gives it a feeling of speed.
Dug this out the other day and my 3 year old took an instant shine to it , partly because he thought the ladder on the back was hilarious when it lifted up and down.
Glad to see that he's enjoying 'my' lego from back in the day but not entirely sure I want to let him know about the rest of the collection yet in case he tries to take it all over!
I do love seeing these random sets and realising I had this when I was younger, along with the police station and multiple other sets from this year. Then I get depressed when I realise I sold them all in my mid 20's when I had no money lol oh well
looks spectacular!
I loved this set so much when I was a kid. Still have it altough yellowed a bit during all this time.
5-wide sleeper behind the cab.. Nice!
It's with oldies like this that I find scratching my head constantly: why hasn't anyone tried to make reproduction stickers for older sets? It'd be great to bricklink the parts but good luck finding stickers unless they're preapplied (and pray the kiddo did a good job at the time doing so). I mean the obvious solution to the issue is to just buy the sets MISB but having the alternative would be nice.
Had this one as a kid, funny I've remembered of it a few days ago, thought about building it with another colour scheme! Good memories, still remember how it was to fit those epic bikes inside!
'Red Line Police' was definitely my favorite LEGO Police.
I especially liked that blue shaded guy with the printed cap. In '93-'94 EU catalogues he was portrayed as some sort of antagonist to the almost identical looking guy in the green vest ( https://brickset.com/minifigs/pck001/jacket-green-with-2-large-pockets-blue-legs-red-cap ) just with a badge and different colors.
The green guy was then called 'Max Timebuster' and was even heavily featured in a TV commercial back then (the name also implies a connection to Time Cruisers' Tim Timebuster). I wonder if the Police guy counter part ever had an actual name?
Also grumpy '93 Police Chief's head was reused for the Divers line minifig 'Diver Dan'.
It's a great surveillance vehicle, very inconspicuous.
