Review: 40336 Newbury Juice Bar

Hidden Side features several haunted buildings which transform when inhabited by ghosts. The smallest of them, 40336 Newbury Juice Bar, has become available at LEGO.com and seems fairly interesting given its promotional status and the resultant limited size of this model.

Moreover, two superb minifigures are included and the transformation function looks effective in my opinion. Hopefully this model will therefore match the wonderful standard which has been established by 70422 Shrimp Shack Attack and 70425 Newbury Haunted High School.

Minifigures

LEGO has produced two renditions of each central character and this version of Parker L. Jackson only otherwise appears in significantly larger Hidden Side sets. This minifigure is therefore appealing and I think it looks magnificent, featuring colourful patches across both sides of the torso which seem reasonably appropriate for a teenage character.

The bright light yellow green hat appears similarly distinctive, particularly in combination with Parker's lavender hair! This dual-moulded element looks brilliant and I like her double-sided head too, featuring smiling and frustrated expressions. An attractive vibrant coral mobile phone is provided with this figure, displaying a marauding ghost which has been revealed through the Hidden Side app.

40336 Newbury Juice Bar

Residents of Newbury are found in numerous Hidden Side sets and I am pleased that another such character, named Rocky, is available here. The minifigure consists entirely of existing parts which is somewhat disappointing, although I like the reddish brown hair piece and the head has been chosen well. Its alternative terrified expression seems absolutely perfect for Hidden Side.

40336 Newbury Juice Bar

Despite appearing in several past sets, this reddish brown uniform includes lovely detail and remains fairly enticing in my opinion. The tiny name badge and coffee emblem both look nice and I appreciate the simple printing on his back as well. However, an exclusive torso for working at the juice bar would undoubtedly have been preferable.

Unfortunately, this minifigure has been possessed so includes an intimidating trans-neon green head with a spring yellowish green hair piece. Neither element is unique and I think another hair piece may have been more suitable for Rocky than this example, although the textured detail on this component looks outstanding. Rocky does not include a soul artefact accessory, unlike the other Hidden Side ghouls.

The Completed Model

Newbury appears dilapidated throughout the Hidden Side range and the colourful Slush Ice juice bar therefore seems incongruous, although such bright colours are appropriate for this kind of outlet. The model measures almost 10cm wide so appears substantial for a promotional item and I like its curved shape which is consistent across the whole kiosk.

Flame yellowish orange plates form the counter and the same colour appears underneath the awning which looks perfect. There is ample space for Rocky to stand inside and the serving hatch is splendid, featuring golden pillars with metallic silver highlights on each flank. Furthermore, the drink dispensers are nicely detailed, making good use of stickers, but little decoration is found within the bar.

Several 1x2 inverted curved slopes form an awning above the counter. Its striped design looks great but these magenta and dark green pieces would probably be more effective beside a structure which features more muted tones. The contrasting black roof looks reasonable though and I like the tropical 'Slush Ice' sticker which is applied here.

Turning the model around reveals some 2x2x5 curved panels which are situated at each corner. They have only appeared once before in 70620 NINJAGO City so their return is welcome. Furthermore, two additional stickers are placed above the dark blue windows, suggesting that something sinister resides within the juice bar!

That becomes exceedingly apparent after lifting the roof and revealing a monstrous face. Two printed eyes are placed beneath dark blue eyebrows and the same spring yellowish green teeth are available in several Hidden Side sets, exhibiting brilliant consistency. Stickers depict its cavernous mouth which seems suitably frightening but there is little jaw articulation and no Hidden Side app integration, unfortunately.

Furthermore, I think the position of this monstrous face could be improved. It currently emerges from behind the juice bar which looks alright from certain angles but seems awkward from either side. The hinges could be placed further forward, thereby allowing the face to appear above the bar. However, I appreciate how the designer has hidden this function as there is little external evidence of the ghostly possession.

Overall

LEGO has produced some excellent promotional sets recently and 40336 Newbury Juice Bar should certainly be considered among them. It appears remarkably substantial and including two minifigures seems very generous. In addition, the transformation function is perfectly concealed and works nicely, even though its position looks rather awkward.

However, this juice bar feels inconsistent when compared with larger Hidden Side buildings. The vivid colours are inappropriate for Newbury and I believe a traditional coffee kiosk might have been suitable instead, potentially featuring subtler decoration. Nevertheless, the model remains quite enjoyable and I think it offers an enticing impression of the broader Hidden Side theme.

Thanks for the review! Glad I made the decision to pick it up yesterday. Looks like a fun set

By in United Kingdom,

My only disaapointment with the Juice Bar is, despite the box art suggesting there would be, there isn't any app intergration. At least at this point.
I appreciate this is a very limited availability set, but all the manuals for the full sets have a QR code to scan in the app, to not really any purpose. I can't imagine it would be -too- difficult to include a QR code on this one's manual (there isn't one), that when scanned unlocks the set as a playable level. That way it's there for those of us that have this one, and it's not there taunting those that miss out on the promo.
Plus, since this will no doubt be a bunch of people's introduction to this theme, app intergration would have been a particularly good idea to really showcase what Hidden Side has going on!
That aside though, lovely little build and I'm glad to finally have it.

By in Puerto Rico,

Thanks for the review, this can fit in either form into our Cities (Tiki bar and regular bar).

I was able to get some app functionality by 'minifigure scanning' the barista with a haunted head on, but since he shares the same hair as the grave keeper figure the app registered him as a "gardener". Makes me think the minifigure scanning is based on shapes of parts and accessories.

Nice freebie promo set, looks good joining the hot dog and coffee stands in my Lego City to give a sense of food service in the town. The whole Newbury asthetic goes great with the fishing store Ideas Set.

By in United States,

Really nice parts pack. The Hidden Side theme doesn't move me at all, but the Shrimp Shack was just the parts pack I needed to further pimp out my Old Fishing Store to Seafood Market and Fishing Store conversion. I await this kit to arrive for supplying the base parts to further fill out our amusement park with another food kiosk.

By in Bulgaria,

Nice to see such a low spend threshold for such a substantial gift. Usually ones this big are a $75-99 minimum buy. Looking forward to mine arriving later in the week.

Indeed a more traditional and decaying coffee stand would have been better, but then again for a promotional set it looks splendid !
I hope for the release a haunted amusement park subtheme for upcoming HS sets, since there would be a true potential for ghostly possessions, and this kiosk would fit in it !

Been waiting for this one, looks good!!! Now some Hidden Side polybags, please and thanks.

By in United States,

I BELIEVE the minifigure is designed to be in the app through the minifig scanner, or at least that's what advertising at my local store is suggesting. I haven't personally tried out the set yet myself.

By in United States,

Also looking forward to receiving my copy, which should ship soon w/the Sparkle Babies and other freebies (VIP Set and Bumble Bee). They'll have to hold me over for Central Perk's long backorder wait. I believe this little gem will be going beach side in my city, sand and sun make thirst! Will leave out the spooky-fied bits but will keep the flip top, looks like it provides easy access for the flavored ice pusher :)

By in United States,

I’m confused. What is this “soul artifact” mentioned in the article that is apparently absent from this set?

By in Sweden,

I tried to place an order today to get this set, but Legos website doesn't accept payments.... We'll see if customer service calls me back or not.

By in France,

@Mosquitosquisher7 : other Hiddem side sets include a green artefact (captain's sword, chief's knife, school's teddy bear, etc.) belonging to a ghost - that is not the case here
Would have been nice to see an exclusive green bottle or mug

Set looks fantastic, but I can't shake the notion that some of these Hidden Side sets like this and the shrimp shack were repurposed parts of a 2019 Ninjago City add-on that never saw the light of day.

Thanks for the review. I think what I like most about this little set is the colors. It looks good and has some cool useful parts.

By in Sweden,

No interior at all then I assume?

Is it only included with a $50 purchase online, or does it also come with an in-store purchase?

By in Australia,

You guys are lucky. In Australia, this was free once you'd spent $129, but I bought the Ghost Train to get it (and I wanted the Ghost Train anyway). I figure, juice bars are a reasonably-modern trend, so it makes sense that this building doesn't quite fit the look of the rest of Newbury (where everything looks out of the 1800s) and actually seems modern.

The amount of stickers in most of the Hidden Side range makes my teeth grind, but, that aside, I think this looks pretty cool.

By in Australia,

Looks like a nice set but seems like a bit of a miss with no app integration. It's available with a $129 purchase in Aus and the price of the Lunar Lander is also over the threshold for free shipping so makes a compelling argument for me to pull the trigger on that purchase. App integration would allow it to preview the product line in full to people like me; not really interested in Hidden Side but curious and ready to be convinced.

By in United States,

Just a minor quibble here... a picture of the packaging would have been nice information.

By in Latvia,

I was sure this set worked with the app! If so, I'm unlikely to get this promotion

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

So it doesn’t work with the app?
I’ll cross this off the ‘wanted’ list then. I was going to get it as a ‘taster’ to see what all the Hidden Side fuss was about.

By in Singapore,

Normally, I'd be happy to see more sets including that same torso rather than changing it up every time for the sake of change and making it less easily massable. But I agree that a new uniform specifically for this juice bar would have been a better fit, since it clearly isn't part of The Coffee Chain.

I think the brighter colors on this one are fine. I mean, the same flame yellowish orange is used on the School Bus — I mean the Cool Bus. And there were no complaints about that. There's also traces of black, dark blue and sand green that are a regularity in other Hidden Side sets. So I really don't see the issue with the color scheme of this.

I'm disappointed to hear the feedback that there doesn't appear to be any app integration despite the marketing. I hope this is an oversight that'll be addressed soon.

It's 80 Singapore dollars of purchases to get this set which is right about what I would expect, but I can probably get better value for flame yellowish orange and sand green parts (the two colors I'm seeking most right now) elsewhere. However if I get an opportunity to get this, I just might do it and repurpose it as a regular juice bar for my LEGO town, possibly replacing the sand green with the same magenta found on the awning and the awning's dark green with dark azure, and so on.

By in Australia,

Wow, there's been a dramatic switch here! When this theme was announced I remember nothing but complaints about the app integration, and now it's overwhelming complaints about the lack of app integration!

I hope we get an article about the app soon (I know, other sites are available) so I can see what the fuss is about, but this set stands on its own merits.

Picked one up at the Discovery Store in Birmingham today for £13 if people want it and don’t want to spend £45

Thanks Capn for the review. I appreciate the stunning photography. However, as BanjodeFairmont mentioned already, I miss some further images or information not directly related to the build itself but to the packaging etc.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was in store yesterday in Raleigh and it's part of the in-store promos (listed on signage at the front of the store). I added some Series 19 Minifigs to get to the $50 mark so I could get the set.
