That dude really looks like a rebel.
Cute car.
Sweet hinged sunroof man!
One of my favorite sets! Made countless doubles of it in all shades of color.
The minute i comment about LEGO making roadsters...
oh man, I regret giving this one away. A small but charming set!
Those eyebrows!
This and the Hot Rod Garage were easily the best Bricklink purchases I've ever made.
I loved this little set. It went well with the Hot Rod Club (which I never did buy).
I realised, recently, that when I was 11? My Lego city had a narrative (a bunch of main characters and a storyline that I used to follow). Right? I was all about the story-telling, with my Lego, when I was kid. But there were so many awesome, brilliant Lego sets that I never bought ... because they never fit the particular storyline that my characters were all following. I missed out on a lot of good stuff!
Thank goodness for Bricklink. "Oh hey, there's a set I really should've bought when I was 12." *completes purchase*
Rebel Roadster was definitely a good companion piece to 1994's Hot Rod Club, a veritable legend all on its own. However, it also could work as a substitute for the poor kid who didn't have enough allowance (or willing parents) to afford the Club, yet still wanted a cool, hot rod-type car. No chrome exhausts, but hey, not everyone could be the boss of the shop!
I have Hot Rod Club and both cars are still assembled. Never felt the need to get the Rebel Roadster, though.
One of my first Lego sets. I got on christmass long time ago If I remember correctly. Recently I rebuilt it and it's on my shelf, without the figure though.
Is that guy taking apart the engine of someone else car
I got late into the game, got myself the Club second hand by chance. Later on by pure luck, I managed to build another pair of hotrods with the pieces at hand.
*Has to stick his head out the sunroof in order to see out of the car*
The second LEGO set I got in my life. Back in ’97, because of my parents’ divorce, we (mom, sis n’ I) moved to my aunt, 300 km away from my home city. Unfortunately, in transportation, my very first LEGO set - 6525 Blaze Commander - was lost. I was so upset, that when my cousin saw me, he decided to gift me with his brand new 6538 Rebel Roadster. I will always be thankful to him, the set gave me a lot of fun, distracting me from family dramas.
Fond memories of this set! I remember once displaying it as part of a layout at our county fair and someone stole the figure. I was so sad because the leather jacket was sooo cool. My mom offered to split the cost of a new set so I could have the fig again. I still have both sets!
One of my favorite sets ever. Probably the set I’ve rebuilt the most.
Love the fact that back in the day sporting a basecap was enough to make you a "rebel".
LOL
Those eyebrows make the man look a little sad. :(
This isn’t Star Wars at all! XD
I have to kinda wonder if Baron Flambo's car in the Lego Stunt Rally video game was inspired by this set. His was, I grant, rather more extreme with *literal flames* coming from the engine; but even so, the car design and colour scheme is very similar, right down to the building techniques used for the cab.

Granted, that might just be symptomatic of them being modelled on the same kind of car; but I like to think the in-game car was making a deliberate reference back to this set ^^
Fitting choice for the 666th random set!
