Random set of the day: Santis
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 8773 Santis, released in 2004. It's one of 24 Castle sets produced that year. It contains 46 pieces.
It's owned by 1200 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

He looks uncomfortable.
I had Santis and Rascus from this theme. I thought they were pretty neat action figures, and the switch on the back that allowed them to be able to use their weapon was neat, but they just didn't seem "LEGO" enough for me. Same went for the two Gallidor sets I had. Sure, they are more durable than most figure sets, but there isn't a whole lot of regular LEGO elements in them.
I bought a couple of these (the blue, green and purple ones) for sheer curiosity sake (after the local toy stores started clearancing them out cheap), but I found they made really great statues for my Lego City. All I needed was a few grey bricks to build a pedestal, and they looked really striking.
I remember seeing a one of these figure's heads in a friend's lego bin, and being shocked that it was an actual lego piece.
Santa?
Aw, Knights Kingdom; good times, even though I never owned any of the sets. Wouldn’t mind Lego rebooting this, though some female characters would be a welcome addition.
@SearchlightRG: Agreed, Knights' Kingdom I had no fewer than two female characters and that was something I missed in II.
A thousand years in crimson wear, outstanding strength exceeds the bear!
I remember a BZPower article asking of these figures, "Can Lego make lightning strike twice?"... As in, is it possible for these System-based knight action figures to become as popular as the Technic-based Bionicle action figures? I bought one to see what they were like and was not impressed. The double ratchet joints were harder to use and much more vulnerable to wear than the Bionicle ball joints, the printed face underneath the helmet looked awful, and the one piece sealed torso was much less adaptable than even the 2001-2002 Toa torsos if you wanted to do anything else with it. Speaking plainly, it just didn't feel like Lego. But I guess these figures did well enough, because they got three or four waves. I'm sure many Brickset readers have much fonder memories of this kit than I do.
I got maybe a different version of this set sealed in a tub from a thrift store last Summer...set, 8785: Santis. The picture looks the same, but mine has 4 more pieces listed. Mine came in a plastic containter, not sure if that is the difference, or maybe this one did too. Now I'm curious.
Update: I just looked it up. 8785 says it comes with 3 cards, maybe that plus the plastic container are the 4 extra pieces.
During my dark ages, I was thinking of going back to Lego once. Then I saw one of these for sale somewhere and it turned me right off of Lego again for a few more years.
Sweet shield dude.
@sbpyrat - I can verify that this version (the European release) did indeed come in a plastic canister, too. I guess the difference in part count must have just been the cards?
Personally, I liked these guys at the time... though at the same time? I can also understand the disdain for them. Still, I found them fun; I collected the whole first wave, with Santis here being my last... I dunno, I just found him the least appealing of the characters.
(I also remember that Legoland Windsor had a costumed character dressed as him for the Knights' Kingdom event in autumn 2004. So... that was a thing.)
I didn't pursue my interest in the theme beyond the first year, though; the '05 knights were just bulkier versions of the same characters, with even fewer buildable surfaces than their predecessors... and too, the second year's storyline just didn't hook me the way the first year's had.
Also, seconding SearchlightRG and LegoSonicBoy; while the lack of female characters was symptomatic of a lot of Lego themes in the mid-00s, KKII definitely feels like one of the worst offenders. As a kid, I didn't think anything of it; but in hindsight, that fact is glaring, and would have done well to be addressed at the time.
What A lad!
Thanks @BionicleJedi. It's not really my jam, but it was cool to get a sealed one in a cheap used LEGO haul. Not sure what I'll do with it, I hate to break the seal. For now, it's just with all of my other unopened LEGO (most of which will eventually be opened, just haven't gotten to it yet).
