Review: 60267 Safari Off-Roader

Numerous distinctive and varied locations have appeared in modern City sets, including jungles and the desert. 60267 Safari Off-Roader further expands that focus, featuring an excellent truck which is exploring the beautiful savannah while encountering its animal residents.

Furthermore, this model resembles 6672 Safari Off-Road Vehicle from 1990 and the accompanying minifigures are appealing, incorporating many interesting elements. The animals also look fantastic and I think the price of £17.99 or $19.99 feels relatively reasonable. In fact, this set may be completely devoid of weaknesses!

Minifigures

Two minifigures are included and both are appropriately dressed for their safari. The female character includes an exclusive torso which appears realistic, featuring an attractive dark green jacket and a red neckerchief. That matches the red hat and the moulded ponytail looks brilliant. In addition, this double-sided head is nicely detailed and the minifigure carries a red cup with some binoculars.

View image at flickr

No unique components are comprise the second minifigure but his facial expressions are lovely. One side displays the measured demeanor of most wildlife photographers while the other looks frightened, presumably because of the approaching lioness! The torso looks excellent too, only appearing in four previous sets since its introduction during 2018.

View image at flickr

However, the torso might frequently be obscured by an enormous tree costume component which fits on top. This element was originally created for 60174 Mountain Police Headquarters but it looks even better on this occasion, featuring some foliage along with a colourful parrot. The same combination of yellow and blue plastic has been available previously but this creature remains very desirable.

View image at flickr

An impressive big cat component was introduced with the Jungle subtheme during 2017 and returns here, representing an agile lioness. This element certainly replicates the lithe shape of these animals and the white decoration across the muzzle looks wonderful. Moreover, I appreciate these large eyes while the lioness features extensive articulation. Hopefully a male lion will emerge in the future.

The Completed Model

Off-road vehicles and trucks have appeared in myriad City sets and this model shares certain design similarities with its predecessors. However, the angular aesthetic seems notably distinctive, matching authentic safari vehicles which are similarly rugged. This truck measures 14cm in length so is smaller than many other examples, although that does not compromise the consistent level of detail.

View image at flickr

Black and white stripes, resembling those on zebra, dominate this whole vehicle. These are created using stickers and their overwhelming importance is slightly disappointing, although I think the result looks magnificent. A simple bullbar is situated underneath the bumper and the square headlights are extremely effective, complementing other harsh edges across the safari truck.

View image at flickr

Additional stickers decorate each flank alongside some fantastic brick-built details. The snorkel beside the windscreen looks good and I love how black candle elements have been incorporated along either side. They have not been available in black, until now. Dark bluish grey fenders protect the large tyres and there is ample ground clearance for crossing uneven terrain, although minifigures may struggle to climb aboard.

View image at flickr

Three 1x4 lattice components form the roof storage rack and another sticker is applied here, featuring an acacia tree beside the lioness. This emblem definitely captures an appropriate atmosphere and the trans-yellow lights seem realistic too. Moreover, the roof can be removed in one section, allowing easy access to the interior space.

View image at flickr

Internal details are relatively limited, although I like the tan upholstery that contrasts with the external bodywork and there is sufficient space for three minifigures. Presumably this model was designed for transporting photographers on safari rather than tourists because tourist vehicles commonly lack rear windows and offer augmented passenger capacity.

View image at flickr

Several additional stickers are applied towards the rear of the safari truck, forming more zebra stripes alongside air conditioning louvres. The black fuel cap looks wonderful and I appreciate the connection point for attaching trailers, although none are included. Perhaps further safari vehicles will be released during the summer, providing a trailer to connect here and various alternative animals!

Overall

At the beginning of this review, I wondered whether 60267 Safari Off-Roader would reveal any weakness. The prevalence of stickers is certainly disappointing but this still represents an impressive addition to the City range. The focal truck features many authentic details and its colour scheme is striking, standing out beside recent sets from this theme while recalling historic designs, such as 6672 Safari Off-Road Vehicle. I am especially satisfied with the angular styling which definitely corresponds with actual safari trucks.

View image at flickr

The minifigure selection is equally appealing. New torso designs are always welcome and the outlandish tree costume looks fantastic, introducing some humour to the set. This exclusive lioness is also lovely. Furthermore, the price of £17.99 or $19.99 feels perfectly reasonable so I would have no hesitation in recommending this charming vehicle!

I love the throwback to the classic Adventurers minifigs with the woman in green

By in Finland,

This jeep looks very good, but it would be even better if it had a door or two on the back.

By in Belgium,

To bad about the vast amount of stickers, but I will still be getting multiples of these (on discount off-course) :D

"In fact, this set may be completely devoid of weaknesses!"

Lack of opening doors.

Might have to get it!

Very interesting and good set. For 20 euros, two minifigs, two unique so very appealing animals and a great off road vehicle, plus accessories and this superb trunk costume ? All what is necessary for hours of play and adventure in a very affordable box. What else?

I'm not normally a City collector, but this is fantastic :D Love the Jurassic Park vibes that it gives off, and the zebra design looks wonderful as well. I wonder if this is a hint towards a future Zoo subtheme...

By in United States,

MOST WANTED city set. So glad the tree costume makes an appearance in a cheaper set! Plus an animal and vehicle for only $20? Fantastic!

Awesome set.
Definitely a must buy.

By in United Kingdom,

I'm trying to cut down on City in 2020 but there's not a snowball's chance in hell that I can pass on this one....

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Shame about the stickers, but that's definitely a buy.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As someone who has the original’ 6672, I’m looking forward to seeing this parked next to it.
Reminds me of someone I saw at one of the London Brick shows as few years back who had recreated a lot of 90s town/city sets with a modern twist. Anyone else see that? Or was it a dream?

"snorkel"?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Definitely a fan of this set, and have been since I first saw pictures, but I'm a bit disappointed that the decals are stickers and not prints. Still, I'll buy this one as soon as I can :)

By in Hungary,

This set is a great idea; an old nostalgic set created with parts to match today's expectation levels. But it has it's flaws e.g: stickers instead of available printed parts, and -most importantly- without sprung wheels.
I think the time has come for Lego to invent something like that, because those were FUN!
As I'm an owner of the original 6672 vehicle this is a must buy set for me, and until now probably the most wanted for 2020.
What do you think, is there a way to combine somehow the 1+2+1 wide long original sprung wheel base with this build?

Gravatar
By in France,

Stickers are a major weakness IMHO.
168 parts for 20 bucks is not great either....
I do like the model though

Hmm, I'm not completely into why all the enthusiasm about this.. Somehow too big and I was deeply disappointed knowing they've used stickers instead of prints... That was a killer.

It's 15 bucks as the cat is worth $5 itself. So the price point is pretty good considering the new Adventure torso and the tree piece.

It's also the cheapest set yet to have a big cat piece.

By in United States,

I love this almost as much as I love Baby Yoda.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This gives me fond memories of my 6672 set. I loved that set as a kid, especially the doors which were printed too. The new one looks fantastic, even though it uses stickers rather than prints. I wish they would bring back the old red wheel holders with suspension. They were so much fun to play with

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like this entire set (though I'm not crazy about applying all those stickers) and the vehicle looks great as well as accurate. They even included the snorkel.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I spot some weaknesses:
1) stickers instead of prints for the zebra striped parts
2) no opening doors
3) missed opportunity to include a male lion mold

1 is inexcusable given there is precedent for zebra prints in the earlier 6672 set.
2 might be able to remedy with a rebuild and some extra parts
3 here's hoping for a future male lion mold!

Still a nice set and worthy of acquisition.

By in United States,

I don't collect city, but this is worth picking up just for the lion. The jeep is great as well. For $19.99 this is a must buy. It will be even better to pickup when it goes 20% off.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Definetly a buy and this will.make a great gift next year to my pops.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love the Pippin Reed torso callback. Great selection of parts in this, but the stickers and lack of doors is disappointing. A must buy when its on sale as these mid-range sets inevitable do.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'm significantly less-enthused by it, now, given all the stickers (and vehicles that lack doors really does bother me, as a trend). But there have been far worse sets, and I love the lion and tree-trunk disguise pieces. I'm in.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Seems like an excellent set, waiting to rush off the shelves!
Just need to mention the sticker wish, so maybe some day, when all the world will be in peace and have plenty to eat, Lego will also just print this kind of thing, as they should do, going for the best and all...

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is the set I've been waiting since my childhood for...

Gravatar
By in Norway,

A fantastic set!
If only all city sets was like this, I would buy a lot more of them :P
Lego; If you make sets with animals in them, i will buy them simple as that ;)
So happy we get a lioness finally, I will buy a pack of them :D

Gravatar

Love this big cat mould.

I have the panther and mountain lion versions, happy to have another

The animal also cuts down on that a bit.

By in Netherlands,

I think LEGO actually skipped numbers for this set on purpose as 60267 contains the numbers 6672 as an easter egg to that classic set.

60260-60266 are still planned summer sets (even on brickset)

Good spot! I like your thinking. By that logic might 60266 be a backhoe?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it perfect? No. Is it a cool looking truck that comes with pretty interesting minifigs, two new animals, and is not fire or police? Heck yes! Definitely will buy.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Stickers ALL over it. Uggghhhh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why oh why did we get a black rectangle print on the I-pace eTROPHY and black triangle print on the Ferrari and not a single printed zebra-stripe piece here?!??

I was upset when I got lucky with 2 extra mispackaged sticker sheets for the Joker's Lowrider to find out the Zebra upholstery there was printed, and I instead got every extras of every other non-minifigure graphic but the one I wanted. Now I'm upset that these are not printed so you can't buy them from Bricks and Pieces and makes the vehicle itself inferior to 6672, 6672 had suspension, unique prints, lots of accessories of minifigs but at least here the minifigs and animals are better.

I also noticed 06672 is an anagram of 60267!

Indeed, it's a great set, but it would have been perfect with an opening door at the rear or even an sliding roof so that the passengers can stand up and take photos.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

When I was a kid I loved playing with safari sets, hoping to see those animals in the wild when I'd grown up. Now, I just hope there will still be rhinos, tigers, elephants and lions left when our kids grow up ....
I reckon that with this set alone, lego probably produces more lions in plastic than there are actually living lions worldwide....

Agree, these could have been included. However, I do think a lot of the time people are forgetting that Lego sets can be rebuilt and modded to anything you want. Remember the five or six alt models on the boxes of old town sets? It seems to me a lot of people these days see just the design Lego produced and think that is what they have to put up with! Is the fun not in improving and changing the set to your own preference?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@MonsterFighter - those builds are the courtesy of Are J. Heiseldal make sure to check his Flickr page

I have the original set, so no need to get this one - stickers are a big disappointment although the price already suggested it, especially with the animals included.
The minifigure torso is nice, a potential buy with a 40-50% discount - probably the only City 2020 set I will get.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Had this included prints this would have been a day one purchase and probably my favorite set of the first half of 2020 for me. But as I hate stickers guts this severly diminishes the set's appeal for me. Had so been looking forward to zebra-printed pieces like in the old one. Shame on Lego for cheaping out on this. Will be getting this set on discount at some point but nothing more.

Strange also that this particular set is not included in the new consumer catalogue 2020/1.

Why?! Because of the puma in that set?
This is not a puma, but a lioness! The puma is dark tan and have different eyes, this is tan and a complete different species living in a different continent ;)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My interest in City is minimal, generally, but I love this set. The vehicle itself, I could take or leave; but between the lady minifigure and her Adventurers reference, the lioness, and the Safari logo on the vehicle reminding me of one of the classic Lion King logos... I'm quite sold on it, honestly.

Definitely the standout 2020 set to me, so far ^^

""snorkel"?"

Off road vehicles sometimes have snorkels to raise the engine air intake A. out of standing water and B. up into cleaner, less dusty air higher above the ground surface.

Gravatar
By in United States,

All these complaints about stickers are ridiculous. That would have to be like 8 or 10 different prints, way too many for a set this size.

I also don't get the demand for prints in the first place. If a piece has a design permanently attached to it, that limits its uses for other things. It's very helpful when building MOCs (which is kind of important to Lego) to be able to choose which parts have designs.

Gravatar

@hamMOC said:

While I've never experienced the issue, some people have had stickers curl and peel off over time. Personally, I'm indifferent to stickers but I can understand why some don't like them. They can be a pain to apply in some cases but as a cost savings measure I can appreciate their usage.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@hamMOC : there is nothing ridiculous about hating stickers. Time has proven that stickers fare much worse over the years than prints, they are a nuisance to apply more often than not and they generally give the set a cheaper feel. Just look at Cobi and their high quality prints. So much more satisfying. If you care about reusability then simply get the unprinted version of the piece you are looking for.

An all-round really lovely set.

Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to what a real world representation of the off-roader could be?

Short-Wheelbase, Toyota Landcruiser?

Land Rover Defender?

I think it's probably a bit of a hybrid of a couple makes but given the square headlights/orange markers and wide grille I see a 70 Series Landcruiser.

Somewhat related to that: I think the model could benefit from a spare tire.

Love animals, love SUV type vehicles, love unique minifigures, love girl hat pieces, love girls, love Safari, love LEGO Safari, love lots of stickers on stuff (for real), love affordable sets, love LEGO, hate how Disney butchered my childhood Star Wars...um, wait what? I don’t feel that way I just see that wherever I go a lot right now...so jarring isn’t it?

LOVE this set!!! WOOHOO!!!

Toyota definitely.

Also many safari trucks don't have opening doors as such, more just panels.

By in United Kingdom,

Don't have 6672 anymore but still have the suspension elements, I feel a mod coming on... Yes definitely had been toying with doing my own version so will get this to incorporate ??

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the most appealing-yet-affordable CITY sets I've seen in a long time. I have a big soft spot for safari theming and this vehicle is obviously appropriate for that, even without the excellent lion.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Great to see the tree costume in a smaller set, and the lioness too. I have the old 6672 and I really like the design here. Stickers are sad, the zebra striped doors and tile from my old model are still in very good shape, this won't be the case with stickers, but without stickers it will look bland.
Opening doors would be cool of course, but theyre missing in every other set now.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Definitely a day 1 purchase for me. Love the lioness and the affordable price. It’s a shame that here in Hong Kong we still pay roughly 25% more than in the US. Puts price into perspective, eh, Canadians don’t get the worst end of the stick.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I will be buying one for sure (not right away though, its not hard to find City sets for at least 20% off if not better here in Australia). That lion will go perfectly for the Zoo I am building this year.
