The Insectoids version of Space Police Car!! They can race!

Ah, there is the true 1998 Space set. Although once again, we get an inferior, little set example of a main theme.
The character is a variant of Danny Longlegs, a lieutenant of sorts to Queen Gypsy Moth of the Insectoid Hive. Maybe before he ascended the ranks and got the cool shoulder armor. And was also on guard duty with the rank-and-file.

We've gotten this before, just the other numbering for it, right? I feel like we've seen this one before.
EDIT: Wait, this never got rehashed and put under a different number? What am I thinking of then?

This one’s in a cave. 90s cave racers

@MCLegoboy this has definitely been featured before...I know because I was about to say that I played the living **** out of this set as a kid...

Bug Blaster. Is it a blaster used BY bugs? A blaster used AGAINST bugs?
"These are legitimate questions"

I see it's still Small Car Season, watch 3177 come next! (it's a 2010 set, so it is eligible)

By in Australia,

I was going to say, at least it's not a car.

I never bought very many of these Insectoids sets. I was still buying Lego in the late 90s, but by this point, I think themes like Divers and RES-Q and particularly Adventurers were more my style of Lego, than the Insectoids range.

@chuckschwa The entire plot of Insectoids is they're being attacked by giant bugs, so I'd say against bugs.

Insectoids was always my favorite Space theme, in fact my Minecraft character has always been a Zotaxian. I really wish LEGO would do more with this style of alien these days. The Zotaxians and Martians had so many different prints and colors for different members of the species, but more modern themes like Space Police III or CMF tend to make one or two members of species and be done with it. I suppose Chima broke back into that customizable race aspect but it's not quite the same.

Man I loved me some Insectoids

By in Turkey,

I like Lego alien figures but I still can't get used to neither Insectoids, nor the UFO theme from 90's. I just don't like the looks of them.

By in Netherlands,

Insectoids is a bizarre theme if you compare it with the space themes before it. I loved it and have most of the sets of this theme.

It is baffling looking back at official sets of the heyday and thinking man, my 3rd grader could have designed that...and then realizing someone was paid to do so lol.

By in United Kingdom,

Never quite got which insect this was supposed to be. All the other Insectoid ships have fairly clear counterparts, but this one...is it a woodlouse maybe?

Ooh that's glowy.
(not entirely sure if glowy is a real word)

Man I love those bug eye domes they had going on in the insectoids.

Hey, I had this one! :D I don't remember where I got it from, but I know I found it MISB several years after Insectoids had run its course, so it was a pretty neat find ^^ Of course, it didn't *stay* unopened for long...

I've asked before; but does anyone know where I can find the Insectoids character bios from the old '90s Lego website? I'm certain they had them - I remember, as a kid, trying to print them out for reference; but they were white font on a dark background on the site, and our printer didn't register the dark background and just printed them out as white font on white paper (useful!) - but I don't remember anything about them except that they existed. None of the Lego wiki sites I could find had that information, but I'm convinced it was there at the time. (Because where else would I have learned that one of them was called "Danny Long-Legs"? xD)

@worriz107 - those were voltstone rocks ^^ They were what powered the Zotaxians' vehicles; but their home planet had run out of them, so they were questing into space to find new sources.

Insectoids one of the best space themes before the 2000s.

While Roboforce is the line that made me stop collecting Space sets, Insectoids and UFO's were too weird to bring me back.

By in Croatia,

Insectoids and UFO are some of my favorite vintage space themes. Insectoids especially had some pretty awesome parts, like those big parts used for the eyes and the wing pieces. I'll for sure be getting some sets from this theme in the future!

Sort of... but I feel certain that the Lego.com bios had more on the characters, personality-wise, than what's there on the Wiki. I just can't find anything to confirm that - the wiki doesn't mention it anywhere, and even the lego.com pages stored on the Wayback Machine show no obvious sign of it - beyond this vague memory that they definitely *did* exist xD

I know that was where I learned the name of the Lieutenant Maverick character, too - being the only one I had the minifigure of at the time, I noted his bio specifically - and the wiki doesn't even give him his own page, tagging his minifigure by name on the theme's page but not giving any further detail. I remember there were bios for him, Danny, and the three who featured in the UK Lego Adventures Magazine comic strips (though they may have gone under different names on the site, I don't remember). I'm sure that info was there, I just can't... find any proof of it.

By in United Kingdom,

I prefer this set's British name, 'Beetle Pod.' That said, I don't like the British storyline, which portrayed the insecticides as evil invaders.

I recently Bricklinked this very item. It is now a friendly alien in my my Classic Space display. It is suitable because, unlike some recent alien characters, Insecticides characters wear spacesuits. This was a consistent feature of the broader Lego Space range which ended with this line.

Highly recommend the 6977 arachnoid star base--you won't be disappointed! Fortunately I got mine on a huge clearance in Germany back in 2000.

Has anyone else looked at the full list of Space sets from 1998 - and noticed that the next page is 'SPACE:1999'?!
