Random set of the day: Aeroplane
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 1611 Aeroplane, released in 1978. It's one of 6 LEGOLAND sets produced that year. It contains 64 pieces.
It's owned by 86 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Not too bad for 42 years ago
Old wings with smooth edges were the best. These didn’t stack well, but the smooth edge was worth it.
Not Clikits, but I'll take it. It's always nice to see some really old kits for history's sake. Unlike namekuji, I always hated the smooth edges of old wing plates. Modern wedge plates with stud notches are so much more versatile.
Wow. 6 sets produced in a year.
The tail makes some impressive use of jumper plates! I feel obligated to shoe-horn in saying I'm partial to the four-wide era of LEGO planes, and it's cool to see an even earlier plane with the same wings and, while not the same engines, engines that are still used today!
Suck it, aerodynamics! This is the 70s!
They used the same registration code for the Cessna
Nice promotional set to pass the time on an air plane. Do any of the airlines give away promotional sets like this today I wonder.

I don't remember them being given away.
Haven't seen them for a long time but they were a thing you could buy in the air.
Because it’s a Legoland set, does that mean you can only buy it there? My dad’s never been to Legoland and yet I’m sure he has it somewhere.
Looks pretty good for such an old set, all things considered.

LEGOLAND is just the series name back then and goes with the comment above of their only being 6 sets in this series. 3 are planes haha.
These were give aways it says from the airlines.
I mean... is it just me, or do the proportions look much more accurate (aside from the giant wheel at the front!) than most modern Lego passenger planes?
I can guess why, of course; a minifigure-scale plane built to these proportions would be really long and probably not very sturdy. But still, that difference makes me appreciate the design of this one more, I think; it feels more authentic to me than a lot of other Lego planes do.
If you would illustrate the correlation between the "goodness" of a set, and the number/quality of comments in RSOTD, it would be a U-shaped graph.
The sets with most/best comments are the monstrosities like Galidor or Scala, or the precious gems like Black Seas Barracuda, or any classic space.
Today, we are at the bottom of this graph. That's okay, we need days like these as well.
I didn't realize how long those wing pieces have been around. I thought they were new parts when I got 6956 Stellar Recon Voyager for Christmas as a kid!
I Flew with Martinair in 1980. I remember they were for sale in the duty free Martinair catalog. They did not give them away.

When I was a kid, other than Technic all sets had the LEGOLAND label. It was just the way back then. Happy memories.
1978 was the year of the minifig right? This must've been when the Legoland theme split into Castle, Town, and Space, which explains why there were only 6 sets released for the theme that year...
