"Stay away from my toilet paper stash/raft, shark!"

I like the practical background where everything is in camera. The simplicity of using what you got to get the desired effect.

One of those highly dangerous floating sharks.

Good old Pirates Sets!

This is where all of Australia's toilet paper rolls have gone!

Loved this set as a kid. So many tense moments: How many more pieces will the shark chomp off...how much longer can the raft possibly float? Aaaargh! Glug glug chomp chomp...

Yep, there were none at my Costco when we went on Friday.

For something on topic, 7th straight set with fewer than 100 pieces. (59, 22, 35, 18, 84, 21, and now 38)

Having made riches under Redbeard's wing, First Mate Rummy "the Rapturous" took a radical decision: retiring from his respectable position and retreating to retail handmade rafts. Rather oddly, Redbeard respected his resolve, wishing him luck.
...
Rummy, the Renegade Raft-maker, rapidly regretted his renounce.

Oh, nice. I have this one, bought it when it first came out. Man, I miss the Pirates theme.

Pretty clever design for a little raft for that time. And who doesn’t love a bonus shark?

MCLegoboy - Yes, these old all-physical backgrounds not only had a certain charm to them, I also think today's over-elaborate backgrounds are deliberately used to give a false impression of the set being more extensive than it actually is - like how the platform in the 75970 box art really looks like a brick-built structure included in the set.

Oh, this is gold! Great little set. Sadly, I wasn't interested in Pirates back in the day.

I loved the tricorn hats so much as a kid. They felt so FANCY and official. In my pirate crews, I always pretended the tricorn hat wearers were the second-in-commands under Redbeard, and the bandana pirates were low-ranking scallywags.

Or at least one somewhat less small raft

They seem to have neglected the ubiquitous "Boat does not float".

A lawsuit waiting to happen.

"Aww! This was my first Pirates set that I got when I was 5! This is a classic!"

It was either an old set when you got it or, if it was newly released and you were 5 in 1991, you are mid-30s now. The *Teenage* Brickster indeed. Busted! :~) ;~) :~D

When we where kids and this set came in shops I convinced my little brother to give me 2 sets for my birthday if I gave him 2 sets for his birthday. He was not very happy with the deal and probably did not understand why we needed 4 of the same set, but since he had a birthday first I gave him 2 and he gave me 2 a couple of months later to my delight.

The reason why I wanted several was because of the shark included in this little set! I started early to collect Lego animals and here I am 30 years later still collecting Lego animals :D

I always wanted this tiny set because I didn't (and still don't) have a Lego Shark. :(

You can get LEGO sharks fairly cheaply on the secondary market (BrickLink, Ebay etc). I think you can get them through Bricks & Pieces as well.

A great budget pirate set. It has a figure, an animal, and a build that isnt yet another tiny island. Probably explains why I got 2 of them.

Hahahaha so true! This is just the sort of raft us 'convicts' would make too hahaha

We need more pirates sets!! (especially more navy and merchant vessels)

This set was in the prime of my childhood Lego building. It got me thinking about the prices back then, and how expensive Lego has gotten. So, I looked at the retail price for the largest Pirates set that year (Rock Island Refuge; $66). It has 381 pieces. Adjusted for inflation, that would be over $125 today. The 20th Anniversary Slave 1 set is $119.99 and has over a thousand pieces. And it is branded. Lego has actually come down in price over the years.

I've got that pirate, but not the rest of the set. When I was in year 6 at school, I was into trading Lego Minifigures with my classmates: letting them have ones who I had no interest in, for whatever they were willing to part with in exchange. This pirate I got from one such a trade.

...minus his hat, which had been replaced by a blue bandana instead, but still. I've still got him around, too ^^

Xtra Sea Accesoires polybag comes with a shark now, still fairly cheap too.
