Random set of the day: Ambulance
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6666 Ambulance, released in 1994. It's one of 29 Town sets produced that year. It contains 79 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$9.25.
It's owned by 3067 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

The wheels look absurdly small
I had a lot of chances to get this one back in 1994, but it seemed out of my reach. First of all, I was a bit reluctant to ask my parents for an ambulance when, to my knowledge at the time, there was no hospital set. Second, it wasn't apparently sold individually on store shelves in the USA, but it was often offered in the LEGO.com catalog and at least once as a free membership gift in the Lego club magazine (known as Brick Kicks for most of 1994). I joined earlier and got the small F1 Octan formula car, so I missed out on getting the ambulance.
To this day, I still don't have it. And in spite of the recent hospital set, I missed out on getting it, too. My incentive to track this classic from 1994 lessens, but I daresay I shall never forget it. The 90s were a dead time for healthcare in Lego Town, so this set stands out!
Parts Analysis: The 1x1 tiles in trans-dark blue are surprisingly uncommon nowadays, probably due to us AFOLS constructing massive rivers, lakes, and swimming pools. One brand new one costs an average of nearly $4. The window pieces in this set command similar new values, but can be bought for a song used. Side note: The number for this set is quite close to dancing with the devil, so to speak.
Great stretchers with folding wheels.
@Lego_Lord_Mayorca My 90’s town had set 1896 Trauma Team taking care of the accidents and such, with no hospital to take them to. I too wished for one. I remember vividly seeing the late 80’s hospital set in stores and the catalogs, but never got it. Then they didn’t make another one for almost two decades.
I loved this set. I know the wheels look too small, but I still thought it was a brilliant little set (despite Town's lack of a working hospital, at that point).
I had a 6380 Emergency treatment center, Ill remember it as one of my final sets before my dark ages began..
The best Town ambulance.
Ironic set to show up considering the state of world affairs...

I suspect Huwbot is developing sentience.
Soon we will have to contend with Skynet and Huwbot as our invincible overlord. The end is nigh!
I got my first ambulance from my cousin, the 6880. Looking at this, I can see how the design was modernized and refined over the years. I think this is the best looking 4 wide ambulance of them all. 6 wides have some good sets too, but I'll just stop at that.
I like it. Cute design. I just wish we could get some more ambulances in city.
What an absurd set number.
This was my second LEGO set I got as a kid (after 6670). I lost the medics clothes while playing and after 25 years I could buy it back from BL. Such fond memories...
Very similar to 6680, when you think about it! When that one was SOTD, I commented that it probably had a function to eject the victim from the back window (like in one of Top Gear's best segments); I guess it's possible here too!
Classic.
One day...

You gotta analyze more than that my friend. That hat piece, only 3 sets, those side windows... the rear hinge door with window to name some.
Keep it up though!
Seems appropriate for the weird world situation we are now in.
YAY TO ALL HEALTHCARE WORKERS. YOU ARE ALL AWESOME.
That guy is sooooo happy to be wheeling away a patient into the back of his ambulance. I never want to meet that guy.
Looks good, but wheels are definitely too small. I think I like the most 7890 Ambulance.
Was this the same ambulance you get to drive around in on that one task in the original Lego Island PC game? Or was that a different set? I feel like it would be this one, the minifigure looks the same as the two stretcher operators who come along with you on that mission; but I'm not familiar enough with 90s-and-earlier town sets to tell for certain if it's the same one.
I noticed the set number too.
One of the best ambulances LEGO has ever made!
The wheels are actually the correct size, corresponding very well to the Mercedes-Benz 508D & 609D based ambulances used in Europe in early '90s. Larger wheels would've looked hideous (fit for an off-roader, not a van).
Wheels are absolutely not small, look at this photo with the old white ambulance car from the same era as LEGO set 6666: http://www.automotor.hu/hirek/uj-sprintereket-kapott-a-mentoszolgalat-541963/
This is just a perfect ambulance car from the classic 4 wide period with fine details and playability. Goes well with the 6380 Treatment Center from the 80's. I used to think this is the more equipped paramedic car, and the old one from 6380 is the simple ambulance car. Great memories.

I prefer to leave minifig parts out of things like this. Also, I did mention the window parts.
Based on the set number, and the woman in the set wearing red, I would think she's the Devil incarnate.
I have so many fond memories with this set. Not only one of my favourite sets when I was a kid but one of my favourite sets of all time! Also one of the best ambulances ever made, second only to the one from https://brickset.com/sets/60204-1/City-Hospital .

The ambulance in the original LEGO Island was not actually from any official set, as far as I can tell. It looks very similar to this one, but it has a larger windshield, additional headlights, fewer lights on top, etc. that set it apart in terms of build. However, 6666 Ambulance DOES appear in LEGO Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge... and then Island Xtreme Stunts uses yet another unique model that doesn't appear in any sets.
Hey! I have this one, although disassembled!
6666 The number of the beast... after thanksgiving
I've got this! It's still assembled and in my city display.

Actually, I have this set on display next to my 60204. I think it scales better with the building, and it has almost as much internal space. It's that efficient.
It's one of the few sets from my childhood never to be disassembled. It's the same basic design as some 80s ambulances, but with a modernized appearance, similar to a contemporary Ford Transit or a Renault. There was a hospital in the educational Dacta range, but it wasn't sold to the public. I don't think there was anything like it until 60204.
In the UK catalogue, it was listed among the Fire range! Interestingly, it's caption introduced me to new terminology; "Always ready to respond to medical emergencies." This was a year before 'Star Trek: Voyager.'
6666 (ominous, huh?) depicts a 4-wide van-type ambulance like a Fiat Ducato, a somewhat upscaled version of what the Ghostbusters repurposed. It is large enough for a paramedic to perform procedures in, but smaller than a light-duty truck ambulance like the Ford F-450s frequently encountered in America. 6666 perfectly captures the Classic Town aesthetic in its mid-'90s form, with tampographed baseball caps and torsos, detailed minifig faces, and stickers. There's a ton of play value here, as many KFOLs such as the 7-year old me from 1994 were inordinately fond of Lego motor vehicle accidents. I didn't actually have this set, as my parents were rather poor, but I would have loved it.
Thoughts go out to all of our heroes in EMS and the rest of the medical system right now.
