Review: 5005878 Buildable Mother's Day Card
Posted by MeganL,
One of the promotions for this month, right on the heels of the May 4 weekend, is a buildable card for Mother's Day. I admire the marketing premise for this: everyone goes to the store for the May 4 celebration, and then who wouldn't want to build their mum a Mother's Day card? So another trip would naturally be necessary sometime between May 4 - 10 for the buildable card GWP (available with a purchase of more than $40).
However, in the current novel coronavirus world, implementing that is a bit of a challenge, considering none of the stores are open. The LEGO calendar for May does say that it's available on lego.com only, but therein lies the logistics issue. I think very few people who may make an order to get this GWP will actually receive it in time to provide it to the mum in their lives. So clearly decisions on promotions are made well before printing deadlines for the monthly calendars.
In any event, let's take a look at 5005878 Buildable Mother's Day Card, which I think is worth getting regardless of the timing.
As you can see in the main pictures, this GWP comes in a nice box. This surprised me, I think because other buildable cards have been in store build events. The back of the box is the same as the front except the name of the set is in French (though it's not a literal translation).
The card itself is a pretty standard design, and I love the lavender colour chosen. The front has a pretty flower on the front.
I find the inclusion of a stripe of grey a little jarring. Grey hinges are included and I'm assuming that's why the rest of the grey plates are there. However, I'm not sure why white wasn't used, as it was on the Valentine's Day card a year or two ago.
The inside of the card has a spot for a message, thanks to a 1x6x5 wall element.
LEGO has thoughtfully provided an assortment of stickers that can be applied to this area. The sticker sheet is curled inside the box, so it took me a few tries to get it flat enough to take a picture.
Here's the card from the last angle.
Overall
This is a nice little promotional item. I do find the grey an interesting choice to include, but the overall colour scheme is quite nice. The flower on the decoration on the front is sure to charm any mum who receives this card. The best news is that it doesn't cost that much to get this promo - it's available with purchases over $40 U.S.
Thanks to LEGO for providing this set for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

"I couldn't have built a better mom out of bricks"? I should flipping well hope not...
I mis-read one of the stickers as "Thanks for always building me" lol
Also "I love you more than my LEGO sets" should be continued with a "except" and some space to put a set name in. Would have been quite interesting to see mothers reactions.
Shame this won't be in the UK, why didn't they make this available for us in March when we had our Mothers Day?
Is the sticker on the bottom right blank to write your own message, or used?
Pity it's not available as a GWP in Australia - neither was 40407. Presumably shipping problems related to the current pandemic.

Exactly my thoughts. I read the title and was taken aback. Another Mother's Day? Then I realised it was American which was why Megan was reviewing.
Thanks for your review and sticker sheet-flattening efforts, MeganL!
It's a nice, simple build, but the colour choice is off; I love Republic-Starfighter-Dark-Red as much as the next fan, but the flower needs a brighter colour to 'pop' out more.
Imagine ordering $400+ in LEGO (most of it on SW sets) on May 4th and qualifying for not just the Death Star II build, the Poppy Carriage and the Mother Day build as well as some Bricks and Pieces and getting your entire order shafted because of going over the limit on the White Baseplates and(the limit is 3 and somehow buying x2 of them warrants not just going over the limit but also getting everything removed from you order. Months of saving money and being lucky to find that I have enough $$$ after this pandemic only to get a big F--- you from LEGO oh, this is the second time that LEGO themselves messes my order (the first time being on February where somehow my shipping address that I had been using for years wasn't valid so I had to wait a week for the $$$ to deposit to be able to order the sets again loosing the GWP at the time) and yes I contacted LEGO CS but gues the best part: they are overwelmed.
Well, in Minnesota we're still under stay-at-home until at least May 18th, so I can't go see my mom anyway!
As a kid I remember having to apologize after several occasion of hearing my parents cuss...so I'm sorry you stepped on that brick is a nice touch.
Conversely my parents had to apologize. "I'm sorry the dog chewed on some of your Lego bricks" .
LEGO Stores are open?
@choo_choo for me it looks like blank one.
Well, I don't know if my mother would or could appreciate it. My wife maybe...but one thing is sure, I really like the colour scheme, and the design overall.
3rd Minnesotan here! I'll get this and save it for next year!
For people that don't have a Lego shop in their country....like Ireland...and still want to make this card.
I found the instructions of this card on The Brick Fan website:

@LegoLover777 and all the other Minnesotans, I went two years ago, and did a road trip from Seattle to Minneapolis. Nice place you got there!
Just got this free with online purchase of 76157 if anyone who cannot get it wants one :]
Whilst a shame it wasn’t ready in March for UK Mothers Day, much of Europe and indeed America celebrates Mothers Day in May. We are out on a limb doing it when we do in the UK untortunately... Could be adapted for a Fathers Day though in June ??
I wonder if we will see a blue one next month for Father's Day.
My mother is not into LEGO at all, but it's a sweet GWP nonetheless. Pity it's not available here. Come to think of it, none of the recent GWPs were available or added to the cart when I made my last order, even though some were advertised on the website at the time and my order would have qualified.
I’d certainly buy this if available in Australia, something different and a reminder to my 75yo Mother that my Lego addiction that started in 1977 is ALL HER FAULT, hahaha. Question though: Does anyone in Brickset-land have insight into TLG use of American English on and in products? Is its use as pervasive as I’m imagining, notwithstanding that sets like the Mother’s Day card is aimed at the US marketplace. Has Brickset done a deep dive into this at all? More curious than anything.
It's unfortunate that the sheet comes rolled up! It'd be fun to get them for a future Mother's Day (or for my wife anytime).
I'm not seeing the offer on LEGO.com anymore - did it end early?
So what was the last sticker? Or is one of them actually just blank?
Another MN native here!!!
